Blacksmithing - Forging a half round swage

  • In this video I show how to make a half round swage with a handle. Primarily to be used under the power hammer.
    This one is made from a piece of custom "High strain steel" along the lines of A517(B)... Odd but I got some drops for free and it seems to work for a verity of tools. For this type of tool even mild steel would hold up pretty good I think, but medium carbon steel like 1045,4140 would be my standard steel pick.

    Great job Torbjörn! I finished my first real decorative piece last week. A metal woodrack for fire wood. more than 8 meters of round bar, 12 different pieces, 20 rivets. It is not at all perfect, it has a lot of small imperfections but I'm really proud of it. Most difficult build that I've ever done :D

      I have the guts to try just not the funds to take it to the next step. But I’m slowly getting there and finding other ways to achieve the same goal with smaller less expensive tools. I’ve been wanting to get into forging because I have the wood working skills and some fabrication skills. Just wanting to step out of my comfort zone again. Lol. But I’ve been watching a lot of your videos and understanding some of the principles of what your doing. And my mind has been running wide open with ideas from your vids. Thank you for doing the videos.

    • @torbjornahman
      @torbjornahman  Před 7 lety +2

      One could have forged the entire piece, no problem. BUT, this tool is meant to be used with a power hammer, so it's not a traditional tool in that way. A similar, "authentic" tool is made with a shank underneath to fit your anvil hardy hole.
