I've been arguing for years now, that the introspect and wisdom reflected within many of the lyrics written by Rock, and "Alternative Rock" artists of the latter part of the 20th century, rival those of all the great "Classics" throughout history.
But what really amazes me, is that this was accomplished primarily by our "youth". And it's my strong contention that the fact that this modern day "Age of Enlightenment" occurred during the same period as the "Psychedelic Era", was far more than a coincidence.

Hey it's the 78 year old grandma, well he sounds like himself to me in this song, but then I've been listening to Aerosmith since before you were born probably. You must have some pretty sensitive hearing to not recognize him. He is quite young at the recording of this, years of drugs and the high life made his voice a little more raspy I would think, He's one of the greatest as far as I am concerned and this is a favorite song for me.

This is the voice of Aerosmith that I grew up on. It was that high range of Tyler's voice that was so distinctive to us at the time. (he always had passion) He's admitted that age has made it hard for him to reach some of those higher notes today. As far as taking his own advice too strongly..... all of those experiences are what make him the man he is today and I love who he is now so......

You could hear shades of what you know of Stephen Tyler's voice near the end of the song---but some hard living can make a difference in one's voice along with simply aging. This is the classic sound of Aerosmith - and Steven Tyler. They recorded "Dream On" in June of 1972... and it was released on their first album in January of 1971. The single peaked at #59 in 1971... but went to #6 when they re-released it in 1976. It was their highest charting single of the 1970's. It was amusing to hear you going on about how you couldn't believe that voice was Steben Tyler... because for those of us who were there in the 1970's - that is THE voice of Steven Tyler. Tyler was 24 years old when he recorded this song in 1972.

As the years/decades passed they sounded more “live concert sound” with their studio tracks!!!!! I think they learned from ACDC who of course just give you energy no matter where they play be it live, studio, sound check, jam sessions or if they are dicking around in the bathroom!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 So says Austin Texas!!!! 😎🍸

There is actually a recording of a live performance done only a few years ago. While not doing the metal scream, Tyler still sounds a lot like he does in this song. His voice has definitely changed as he is aged but he has kept it in good shape.

As the date of this charting single from their first album indicates, this is the first Aerosmith song most of us heard. You're hearing them and Steve Tyler not completely from current, (aka end) but this is their beginning. Listen to that whole first album, and see if his voice comes on more like you know of it in their later songs. He does belt it out towards the end, and that certainly had to sound a bit more like 'your' Steve Tyler. Great song to react to brother.

I just wish you could see the movie, I just know you would live it..... but yes time can really do a whammy on some singer's voices. Early Rod Stewart vs. older, Elton John , even young Aretha vs. older Aretha (may she rest in peace). But, as far as Steven, liquor and drugs can definitely deepen and roughen a voice.

I read somewhere that Steven Tyler was unsure of his voice in the beginning and purposely used the higher raspier voice to give his voice more soul. The producer of Dream On told him to sing in his natural voice, which is what you just heard. I know the rock star life, and aging, has changed his voice but I think he should have used his natural voice more. He’s not the only singer to adjust his voice. Freddy Mercury usually sang as a tenor but his natural voice was baritone. I found this article www.grammy.com/grammys/news/dream-7-facts-about-aerosmiths-classic-song-grammy-hall-fame

Saw them live in 1994 at Woodstock 25. They killed. Blew Metallica off the stage. He still hits that scream today after 50 years.

Steven usually does not sing that quiet in that low register, that is why it sounds too smooth.

This sounds the same today as it did then. It is the key of F minor that they don't use anywhere else that keeps his voice down low and quiet. That is the only thing that is keeping his voice less gravely. The songs they wrote and that were wrote for them later, like a lot of their hits were, were powerful and more straining and screamy for stevie.

In addition to age and the issues others have mentioned, Stevie T also made a conscious effort to sound a bit more macho starting in the mid to late.1970s.

When you're young, voice is stronger/smoother. After 30-40 years of smokin'/drinkin'/drugin' etc. no doubt it affects your voice.

Just what I was going to say. A few decades and hard partying certainly changed his voice, but it’s still great.

Their first hit from their first album. His scream at end sounds great, but 50 years of screaming and age has changed his voice. Still great but different.

This is Steven Tyler, he still sings it pretty close to the same, but he wrote this song when he was a teenager. Listen to "walk this way", "sweet emotion", "last child", "come together" a Beatles cover, "draw the line" & "heats do e time".. This is how most people know Steven Tyler, not sure why you think his voice that much different, he just a lot older.

He sang this song as a tribute after the Boston Marathon bombing, it may not be "today" but it's recent compared to early 70's lol. Check it out if you want to see how his voice has changed over the years, it's also just a great video. I'd like to see your reaction/opinion of the difference.
