Yes he wrote it as teenager but it was recorded when he was about 25. Aerosmith is my favorite band. I’ve seen them live in concert 30 times. If you want other suggestions from the 70s, there’s sweet emotion, walk this way, back in the saddle. From the 80’s there’s dude looks like a lady, love in an elevator, what it takes, and janies got a gun. From the 90’s there’s cryin, crazy, amazing, I don’t want to miss a thing. There’s a whole lot more. They are the best selling American rock band in history. They have like 40 plus songs that were in the charts. Influencers were Fleetwood Mac, and Janis Joplin. Lots of old blues as well.

You might be the only person I've come across who has seen them in concert more time than me. My favorite band as well. James Brown was another of Steven Tyler's influences. 4.1 octave range, and, yes, the most successful American rock band, one of only 10 musical acts to have crossed the half billion dollar mark in concert ticket sales.

Thanks for mentioning that-it was driving me crazy haha. I think he was actually 21 when he wrote it, since he wrote in ‘69? Correct me if I’m wrong of course, but recording it would place at about 25 as you said.

Steven Tyler has such an incredible range with beefy low and insane high registers… even now - in his 70’s he has the range. He’s simply the best.

‘Dream On’ came of me playing the piano when I was about 17 or 18, and I didn’t know anything about writing a song. It was just this little sonnet that I started playing one day. I never thought that it would end up being a real song.” - Steven Tyler

I grew up in Lynn Mass. Aerosmith was a club band in the Boston area back then. My best friends uncle owned a bar in Peabody called the Summit Club that Aerosmith actually played in their younger days. Hells Angels frequented the bar back then . It was a time in history that will never be again. They went on to become superstars and legends! I remember helping to remodel the club years later and taking down the Paneling with murals of Steven Tyler painted on them.

Steven Tyler had been playing music from his mid-teens ... 'Dream on' was an early song he had written on piano, long before Aerosmith. Tyler actually began playing drums for bands - The Chain Reaction was one of his early outfits... After a few years playing the bar scene in Boston, he met guitarist Joe Perry (who was 2 yrs younger) and saw him perform as a trio w/ bassist Tom Hamilton in 1970... he knew he had a songwriting partner with Perry and formed a new band with Hamilton on bass, his friend Ray Tabano on guitar... Tyler played drums in rehearsals, until drummer Joey Kramer joined the band - it was Kramer who named the band Aerosmith after a book title, 'The Arrowsmith'. Brad Whitford (who was only 18) replaced Tabano on guitar, and Aerosmith had a solid line-up.
When Aerosmith finally got signed to CBS Records in 1972, they didn't have many songs written... so Steven Tyler ( who was about 24 or 25 at the time) brought songs he had written from years ago to the band to record... Joe Perry hated 'Dream on' because it was a ballad, so Brad Whitford did most of the guitars on it, while Tyler played the piano.

There are a ton of great Aerosmith tracks over the past 40+ years. I'll let others tell you about those. What I want to tell you about, however, is the song Eminem did that sampled this song. The song is called "Sing for the Moment" and is my favorite Eminem track outside of Lose Yourself. It might eve be my fav above that one. It's just done so well. I recommend reacting to that song as well. Enjoy bro!

Def Leppard were only about 20 yrs old when they were signed in 1979 and recorded their first album 'On through the night'... Their drummer Rick Allen was only 16 when he played on that album. Listen to songs like 'Hello America' and 'Wasted'... amazing for such young talent.
Metallica were 19 when they came together in 1981 and 21 in 1983 when they recorded their first album "Kill 'em all".
But I have to say that guitarist Yngwie J. Malmsteen (pronounced "ing-vay ma'am steen") was an exceptional talent, releasing his first album 'Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force' in 1984, where he wrote all the music and played guitar on a mostly instrumental record... Listen to the track 'Black star' - Malmsteen was only 20 when he wrote that, and he was playing professionally as late teen in the band Alcatrazz before that. There's an amazing live performance of the track 'Evil Eye' from early 1984 w/ Alcatrazz🤘🤘🔥🔥on CZcams
