      Great video! If there's a Part 2 it needs LSU trying to spike ball with one second left @ Ole Miss in 2009. Pretty sure the same thing happened in the 2012 Rose Bowl.
      Also this might not fit your criteria but last year ESPN cut away from Virginia Tech @ Miami thinking the game was over but the refs reviewed and put a second back on the clock but ESPN was showing another game and Miami almost scored a game winning touchdown that nobody saw.

      Missing context. The previous play had the clock still running and LSU trotted out a massive change and then rechanged back. It was a legendary Les Miles goof again except that the ref didn't give Tennessee time to substitute based on the change and ended up getting too many players. If I'm not mistaken, this lead to the substitution rule that forced offenses to wait on defenses if the offense makes substitutions.

      That was one game where the NCAA really needed to change who won the game. It was over and the refs literally just gave it to the other team through cheating or incompetence. I honestly can't tell if the refs are paid off or just that bad. With modern tech they could do a much better job than they do..

    • @KubiqFeet
      @KubiqFeet Před 3 lety +14

      @@bartfoster1311 I know that as a sports fan, it's easy to believe that there is cheating going on all the time from referees to coaches and to players and sometimes that is the case, but in my opinion, I don't think this game involved any cheating, though it is just a guess.
      Anytime I hear a fan call someone a cheater, I start thinking about it and try to see who would benefit from cheating. Colorado would end up at 11-1-1 and ended up with a split National Championship when they tied against Georgia Tech and when the "Fifth Down Game" happened, Colorado was ranked 12 in the AP poll. Missouri wasn't ranked, though they were a solid team and had just defeated 21 AP rank Arizona Sate (Was only ranked 25 in Week 2, 23 in Week 3 and 21 in Week 4). Missouri ended finished the season poorly at 4-7 and it's possible that had they defeated (12) Colorado in Week 5, Missouri could have had a better record, though that is just speculation.
      Point is that this game was more or less insignificant and it wasn't important enough for the referees to blatantly cheat with some awful calls because the 5th down wasn't the only gaff in the game. The refs also stopped the clock at around 8 seconds as there was a pile of players on the ball and they stopped the game clock without any proper reason which ended up being just enough time for Colorado to run another play . Also, the extra 5th down wasn't from the referees on the field, that whole mess was because of the down marker operator, who was a Missouri alumni and had no reason to give Colorado an extra down. The referees on the field just glanced at the down marker and saw that it 4th down and didn't realize that the down marker operator had forgotten to switch the marker from 3rd down to 4th and in the heat and chaos of the game, the refs forgot what down it was. There's even controversy about whether the Colorado QB Charles Johnson even crossed the goal line and there are photographs which show he was short of the goal line.
      All in all, to me it seems that these was a very poorly refed game laden with mistakes and negligence and some pure bad luck. Afterall during this commotion, a fan in the stadium suffered a heart attack from which he passed away. Whichever the case, it was a crazy game and one that I will remember for a long time.

    • @dacypher22
      @dacypher22 Před 3 lety +11

      I think it was just poor reffing, not necessarily a case of the refs wanting one team or another to win. The refs at that time had the ability to stop the clock if a player is being held down and is not allowed to get back up, which is what was happening in that moment. I think they still do have that ability, but you saw it tried by players more often in the late 80's and early 90's as a strategic move whereas you really don't see anyone try it today. That rule was added sometime in that era. As for the extra down, Colorado called its last timeout after running a second down play and the line crew with the down marker failed to correctly flip it to third down. It is all dumb and bad reffing but I don't think there was real malice in it.

      That Michigan-Michigan State ending in 2015 is still the craziest thing I've ever seen. I watched it live. I cannot believe to this day that ended up being what happened. It was pretty much entirely the fault of the Michigan punter. All he had to do was fall on the ball after the bad snap and it would have been a turnover on downs. Which likely would have likely led to Michigan still winning the game because Michigan State would have gotten the ball after the turnover on downs on about Michigan's 40-yard line (which is where the fumble took place). If that were the case, there would have only been about 9 seconds left in the game and Michigan State wouldn't have had any remaining timeouts. They likely could have tried for a quick out at that point to a receiver to try to gain a few extra yards (then immediately get out of bounds to stop the clock) for a long field goal attempt to win (as they were down 2 points) or they would have been forced to try a Hail Mary. Instead, because the Michigan punter panicked and tried to pick up the fumble instead of falling on it, the ball got loose, allowing the MSU guy to pick it up and run it into the end zone for the game winning touchdown. Simply an unbelievable, once in a lifetime freak occurrence. I don't think we'll see something like that happen at the end of a game ever again.
