You are right, there is something in his accent. Marc is from Montreal, Canada and is from a French Canadian heritage which you can hear in his accent.
As for the way he sings, he is not overly trying to sound like Freddy, he's been covering a lot of styles over the year with that same voice although he did work to try and catch that Freddy vibe.
For those who don't know, the province of Quebec produces a lot of great voices. Celine Dion is from here but we also have one of the best Elvis impersonator, a group called Musical Box that sounds exactly like Genesis and Peter Gabriel and when Yes wanted to replace Jon Anderson, they picked another French Canadian that was in a Yes tribute band. It probably has to do with the long boring winter, we need to entertain ourselves... :)

When you comment about Marc doing things differently than Freddie, Freddie also did them differently from performance to performance. Marc, singing live, is actually much closer to Freddie's studio versions than Freddie himself was in concert. Queen always performed with backing tracks and Freddie frequently didn't try for high notes in his songs. Even in the studio, others would sing the high notes on recordings. This was especially true later in Freddie's life, when drinking, smoking, and straining his voice took a toll on his range. I believe Freddie also developed nodules on his vocal cords.
Also, remember this is when Marc is NOT specifically trying to imitate Freddie's arrangement. Here is a side by side I think you might enjoy.
czcams.com/video/VjEijapeMhg/video.html At times (such as 1:40 - "you take my breath away") in the side by side, they cut between Marc and Freddie, and you can't tell if you're not watching the screen.
11:22 - Classically trained? Marc has never had a lesson in his life. Surprise!
12:43 - Although the idea for the BoRhap movie didn't come from listening to Marc, here are two quotes for you.
"He sent a video to Brian May and Roger Taylor and he sounds exactly like Freddie Mercury."
"It's hard to find someone who can sing like Freddie Mercury and I'm not sure the movie would have happened if we didn't have Marc."
    - Graham King (Producer of the "Bohemian Rhapsody" movie, speaking of Marc Martel)

Just an FYI for those making the argument one way or the other... There was no “choosing” between AL and MM. AL was in the public view when he lost American Idol (2009). Brian and Roger was on an episode of AI the same year. It was also in 2009 when Adam Lambert first performed with Queen. Marc Martel wasn’t chosen to be in Queen Extravaganza until 2011. AL had built up a following during the season, so it only made sense to stick with him... But, there is no doubt that MM is the superior talent. He’s an actual musician. BTW... MM naturally sounds like Freddie. It’s all in his facial structure naturally.

Before Marc Martel knew Queen many of his audience will comment on his voice that he sounds like Freddie then he researched on queen then realized he have similar voice so basically he is not impersonating Freddie or he's not trying to be freddie, he just naturally sounds like Freddie

  • @JonCorrieri

He doesn’t play with Queen because they don’t want to try to replace Freddie with a sound a like, as he’s irreplaceable. So instead they chose Adam Lambert, a person completely opposite of Freddie, yet still talented. He does play with the official Queen tribute band - The Queen Extravaganza.

The answer is simple. They met Adam two years before they met Marc. In the documentary you can clearly see Brian fell in love with Adam. They say they had instant chemistry. I am still wondering how two rock musicians can love a bubblegum pop singer.

It's really quite sad that you're trying to change other people's opinions because you personally don't like him. hi. marc martel incidentally had the same voice as freddy, (voice as in Hz/frequencies) even before he started singing queen songs. but it shows that he worked very hard at becoming who he is. no accident. extremely good singer. he was always there. you can research him online and on youtube.. its amazing. its just that the movie made him more exposed now.

Roger and Brian both have said they didn't want to "replace" Freddie which is why they went Adam. Adam embodies more of the camp and pomp that Freddie did. Marc, is not trained at all, and he was compared to Freddie long before he studied Freddie's styling. And yes, he does have his own music where he sounds similar, but not exactly the same.

Just over 8 years ago(maybe longer) Brian May & Roger Taylor held an international internet contest to hand pick members to form the first authorized Queen tribute act called The Queen Extravaganza.. Marc's natural singing voice is what you hear. He was a christian artist here in Canada & had actually never listened to Queen until people started telling him hey you sound like Freddie Mercury.. so he finally checked it out and began performing in queen cover bands. He entered the contest and won. And the rest is history... oh & Freddie was a Baritone as well.. he sang high for the songs Brian wrote as Brian has a higher voice.

I've seen Freddie Mercury 4 times in my life I've seen mark Martel once there was a difference stage presence for 1 Freddy's voice was more silvery his tones were more Airy I don't understand why mark didn't get the job maybe because of stage presents and Adam Lambert is more well known but he is not the proper singer for Queen I follow Queen for over 40 years I know the difference as soon as I hear it

I play classical piano and I'm a Teacher, this video was a great idea to share. What strikes me is how he plays all the instruments especially stringed instruments and knows Opera like Freddie did. He does sing a mean piece from the Father of Opera himself. It really blew me away listening to this with my eyes closed. What's most interesting is how he tilts his head at the mic like Mercury did as well. It's very hard for a male to have a high pitch vocal and when he wasn't born with four extra molars like Freddie. I am a firm believer in reincarnation bc I'm also semi medium. Amazing clip. You both have lovely voices. Ty.

Marc is not classically trained. He learned by impersonating other sings which is a huge testament to his talent. I think Marc Martel as a musician knows the importance of needing to sound like Freddy in these iconic ballads but still wants to try and put his two cents in. He has a performance of his previous bands song "How many kings" on his channel that is pretty darn amazing.

. Regarding voice comparison, I agree that you can tell the difference between Mark and Freddie for example the last note of the song it’s hard to put in words what I mean. On some lower or deeper notes he has got the warmth of Freddie‘s voice. Also I totally agree that he should be on stage with Brian and Roger instead of Adam who in his own right should be either a solo artist or with another group 😍

Also check out Marc's video of Bohemian Rhapsody (the song) one take, all by himself on the piano..it's fantastic.
