Shannon's in his Detroit arc recently and as a wings fan I'm here for it. LGRW!
Dude looks good in red
That cough in the end was the work of all the chokes that President’s Trophy winners have committed through the years😂
In fourteen seasons from 94-95 to 08-09, Detroit was first or second in the President's Trophy and/or in the Stanley Cup finals twelve of those seasons. Yes, the NHL defines a dynasty as three cups in four years, but I'm not sure how Detroit doesn't qualify with that kind of success.
Despite all success, don't forget all the failure - 92, 93, 94, 01, 03, 04, 06.
@SverigeiSverige true but what's the old adage about not being able to make a cake without breaking some eggs.
@@SverigeiSverige Missed cup wins lol. You could add 07 and 09 IMO. Health is the only thing that held them back from 3-peating.
@@jfedol7760 You missed the point.
@@SverigeiSverige How? lol, Yes their failures but Detroit easily could've won the cup that year in a grand majority of those years if they didn't run into hot goalies or didn't choke.
I'm from Pittsburgh. I like it when Washington wins the President's Trophy.
Unfortunately for you the Caps won't be anywhere close to the President's Trophy. Can't choke in the 1st or 2nd round in you don't make the playoffs...
Yep. Shannon's a wings fan. I'm locking it in.
The Sabres' lone President's Trophy is among the most haunting "What could have been?" moments in Buffalo sports history. If the Sabres had ever had a year to win the Cup, that would have been it.
The year before was better.
So much detail goes into these videos! You are constantly giving us awesome content, Shannon. Thanks for all you do!!🙌
I never knew Ottawa won a president trophy
I'll never get over my wings losing in the 1st and 2nd round back to back years as President trophy winners...and both times it was against CANADIAN teams...haha jk, great video as always THG! Can't wait to keep up with your videos during the Upcoming season.
At least we can say that Detroit lost to the Conference champions in 03, 04, 06 and 07. We didn't get beat by *chuckles* Columbus
President Trophy results
12 times eliminated in Round 2
8 times eliminated in Round 1
6 times eliminated in Conference Final
3 times eliminated in Stanley Cup Final
8 Cup wins
8 out of 37 years
But it's 37 years. 🧐
@@SverigeiSverige The Lockout year didn't happen (2005)
@@johncox7169 No count again, 37 seasons.
@@SverigeiSverige Yeah, you're right. Looks like the OP missed one of the round 1 losses.
@@SverigeiSverige oops my bad, crucify me
Your hard work and dedication are greatly appreciated. Thanks Shannon!
I thought that 1996 one was a mistake. A 27 point win for Detroit? But it's correct, just a wild year. Toronto, St. Louis, Calgary, Vancouver, and Winnipeg all made the playoffs with losing records and 78-80 points. The only good teams in the West were Detroit, Colorado, and Chicago.
I found it interesting that the 95-6 Red Wings won by more points than Boston this year
60 wins back in that era was a way bigger accomplishment than it is now. The points that teams got in a season was nowhere near as high as today
The loser point... 🙄
Boy he looks good in a Wings jersey.
Great video as always
Go Avs Go
I understand that for this curse there's a physical aspect to it, players from a Presidents trophy winning team might not have enough stamina left for the playoffs, but I still believe it's like the blue teams (before 2019) or Canadian teams not winning the cup
Someone made a good point about the playoff structure. All Presidents Trophy winners who won the Stanley Cup were under the top seed vs. bottom seed structure. The divisional bracket now makes seeding even less relevant.
I personally would like to see an NHL playoff structure with no conferences at all, and just have the top 16 teams seeded by record and have the President’s Trophy winners matched up with the 16th seed (then 2nd vs. 15th, 3rd vs. 14th…) and have it reseeded each round
Right now, teams that have clinched are better off resting their players and teams that are eliminated are rewarded for continuing to lose, it’s a vanishingly small number of mid-table teams actually have any incentive to try and win
That teams gas themselves to obtain the President's Trophy in general, and all-time regular-season records in particular, is beyond doubt. Just look at how the Bruins kept trotting out Bergeron and Ullmark down the stretch last year.
It's not European soccer, gents. Stop doing this.
All it takes is one home loss to take that home ice. NHL is the easiest to do it in
What do you mean with European football? 🤔
@@SverigeiSverige In European Football, winning the regular season is a big deal. One would much rather win the Premier League than the FA Cup.
Holy Shan..did you ever kill it this summer dude. Just every single day with these interesting takes/breakdowns.
👏👏
I count 20 out of 37 exits in the 1st and 2nd rounds. It's not a curse, but it makes many people think teams burn themselves out during the regular season. Adding to it was knockouts like 8 seed San Jose beating 1 seed Detroit in the 93-94 season. It's very different from the NFL where until recently, top teams were still likely to end up in the conference final or the Super Bowl.
Interesting video, Shannon. Your facts and observations are well taken. Consider also that there's a notable difference between regular season hockey and playoff hockey. Is it possible that most Presidents Trophy teams get so used to winning during the regular season that they don't take that mental leap when the playoffs start? It's been said that you can't just flip a switch at playoff time, but what about being on cruise control too long? Do coaches fail to make the proper adjustments to their systems at playoff time, or is it the players themselves? Playoff hockey is much tighter checking. When I first started following hockey, the first round was usually a gimme, somewhere between the regular season and the later rounds. But nowadays its very tight checking from the start of the first round.
I wonder if we are ever gonna see two top teams in the conference again like in 2001
Probably will at some point. For the longest time the 04 Lightning were actually the only “first place in the conference that didn’t win the president’s trophy” team to win the cup. Then both the Avs and Knights in the last 2 years joined them.
@@breadman6030Hawks Sharks was in the WCF and was 1-2 in the conference. Slightly different scenario to what the original comment was referring to.
I'm a Leafs fan but was shocked that the Bruins lost in the first round this year, I thought they would at least make it to the finals. I was really ecstatic when they got knocked out because it made Toronto the favourite to win the Cup, but we all know what happened there.
It's the trophy Canadian teams can still win!
Don't understand how League Winners aren't celebrated more In the top 4 leagues.
Particularly MLB and NHL, crazy amount of games, and to be consistently winning the whole season.
It's like yas got the importance of the trophies the wrong way round over there.
In the Premier League, it's the League winners who got the most important trophy, and the F.A cup (knockout style tournament) is the 2nd most important.
There are two seasons in the NHL, and they give out a award for best team in each. President's is best in the regulae season, Stanley Cup is best in the Playoffs.
Since 2010, 5 teams lost the Stanley Cup Final and then won the Presidents Trophy the next season.
Since the salary cap came in, it's that much more critical how you manage the trade deadline compared to your rivals and who's injured going into the playoffs. Some teams are so keyed to being in the playoffs that they coast into them against teams that are a lot more amped up than they are. It's one of the reasons that the play-in round idea is problematic. Even the teams that survived being upset by teams that played in, entering the playoffs at a higher level of intensity, came close to upsets in every series.
Tampa Bay barely got going until the 2nd round that made them vulnerable to being knocked off. With Boston this season, people always talk about the necessity of teams dealing with a bit of adversity during the season and other than winning despite injuries, the first losing streak they had was their last.
Its fine to go after the presidents trophy just dont burn yourself out, the difference between the panthers and the Avs 2 years ago was Florida pushed for it and the Avs learned their lesson and basically just meandered their way all year to 56 wins, the first time all season i saw them try their hardest was game 1 against Nashville
Laid out like this, the data shows just how closely Presidents Trophies are linked to Finals appearances. Not including Boston this past year, only 5 winners didn't make the SCF within two years of winning the trophy - St. Louis in 2000 (19 years to nearest SCF appearance, 2019), Ottawa in 2003 (4, 2007), Buffalo in 2007 (8, 1999), San Jose in 2009 (7, 2016), and Washington in 2010 (8, 2018). Every other team would either battle for the Cup within two years or had battled for it no more than 2 seasons previously.
The data laid out:
86, EDM - 1 year removed from nearest SCF appearance
87, EDM - 0
88, CGY - 1
89, CGY - 0
90, BOS - 0
91, CHI - 1
92, NYR - 2
93, PIT - 1
94, NYR - 0
95, DET - 2
96, DET - 1
97, COL - 1
98, DAL - 1
99, DAL - 0
00, STL - 19
01, COL - 0
02, DET - 0
03, OTT - 4
04, DET - 2
06, DET - 2
07, BUF - 8
08, DET - 0
09, SJS - 7
10, WSH - 8
11, VAN - 0
12, VAN - 1
13, CHI - 0
14, BOS - 1
15, NYR - 1
16, WSH - 2
17, WSH - 1
18, NSH - 1
19, TBL - 1
20, BOS - 1
21, COL - 1
22, FLA - 1
23, BOS - 4 years removed from 2019, we'll see if they can make it back to the SCF in the next two years
Washington won 2016, 2017 - 1 year.
Just goes to show what counts is who's hot come playoff time. 2010 Flyers barely made it to the playoffs but after falling behind Boston 3-0 they got smoking hot and ended up in the Finals and had a legit shot at winning. 2007 Patriots went undefeated and lost to the 9-7 Giants in the Super Bowl. 2001 Mariners won 116 games and lost in the ALCS. I think the NBA is the only league where the top teams win more consistently.
Crazy how big name teams like Toronto/Montreal/Philly/NJ never won it.
Shannon you are the goat! 1st
Here's my take on the president's trophy curse. I think teams that don't face enough adversity in the regular season, don't come in to the playoffs with enough of a fighting attitude. Players being human, they probably come in feeling too relaxed.
Bold prediction: Bruins make 2024 Cup Finals.
You see, since 2011 President's Trophy winner is in the Finals within a year of their President's Trophy win.
2011 and 2012: VAN (2011 Finals)
2013: CHI (2013 Cup)
2014: BOS (2013 Finals)
2015: NYR (2014 Finals)
2016 and 2017: WSH (2018 Cup)
2018: NSH (2017 Finals)
2019: TBL (2020 Cup)
2020: BOS (2019 Finals)
2021: COL (2022 Cup)
2022: FLA (2023 Finals)
2023: BOS - must be 2024 Finals or Cup
But Washington won it in 2016 and didn't make a final appearance in 2015-2017, your ESPN stat only works if you ignore that
Every season is different lmao
1 in 8 is twice the 1 in 16 of the teams qualifying. It's an indication of a quality team, far from a curse or a guarantee.
Has anyone ever won the President’s Trophy and missed the playoffs?
I’m Thinking The Same Thing Too As a Flyers Fan Since 1995!
the real trend coming from this is that teams that wins the President trophy usually do better the year after.
Recently, Colorado, Tampa and Florida made it to the finals the year after winning it.
Regular season means nothing in the playoffs.
I still suffer PTSD from the David Volek goal
Yeah even in the NBA the first overall seed doesn't mean much anymore! No champs since 2017. Really want to see a 1 vs 1 seed in the finals again.
And that 2017 season was only because the completely unfair, OP team just toyed with everyone all year lol.
presidents trophy needs more respect. Like preimere league title. Its just cuz stanley cup finals is right after season. NHL needs more tournaments in between
So what you're saying is... Boston will squeak into the playoffs this year, beat the President's Trophy winners (Carolina? Jersey?) and then Win the Cup?
My hot take is that a Canadian team will be in the finals this year, rooting for almost all of them Im Finnish and if we shared a league with Sweden where 1/4th of the teams were Finnish and had a 30yr drought I’d be livid and heads would roll.
Go Avs first tho, Canadians second.
Approximately a 25% chance you win both.
But only an 11% chance to win both in the Cap Era. (2 PC+SC winners in 18 seasons.)
Should be an asterisk on Ottawa as well. They had Hasek who I believe if I remember was second in sv% and GAA before getting injured. Their offense was incredible. If they has Hasek who knows….
Ehhh... That is just Playoff hockey. Every year teams that end getting knocked out of the playoffs have injured players that if that player wasn't injured...
@@johncox7169 I mean at the end of the day I agree. I am a buffalo fan and we should have killed Carolina instead 4 of our starting dmen went down. Carolina went on to smoke Edmonton and it should have been us! But injuries happen. I just said that cause everyone writes that year off for Ottawa and Hasek and act as if that was old Hasek. That was still prime Hasek not 08 Detroit Hasek.
Condolences in advance to the fanbase of the team that wins it this year.
Should’ve been titled President Trophy Jinx!
Interesting how the Devils who won 3 cups and 5 conference championships never won the trophy

Funny you had to point out NJ never won the President's Trophy. I said to myself before I clicked on this "do I really wanna watch this you know we've never won"
❤😈🏒
Is it more fun to beat the trophy winners than to win the trophy?
Yes, because you're in at least the second round where nobody expected you to be.
@@tiffanynaidoo2003😊
With the 94 rangers winning the Stanley cup
It should come with the asterisk of
“They played Vancouver. And Vancouver currently has no Stanley cups…… yup”
