"Orm" is the swedish word for "Snake", "Ormr" is the old norse way of saying "Snake", so Midgardsormr can be translated to "Snake of Midgard", "Midgard Serpent" or "World Serpent", it is also known as Jörmungandr and is part of norse mythology, it should probably be pronounced as Midgards-ormr instead of Midgard-sormr.

Same meaning in Norwegian as well.
The most common use for "Orm" in Norwegian is "Hoggorm",
which roughly translates to "Striking snake",
it's the Norwegian word for Vipera berus, the common European adder / viper.

Moomba was my favorite summon from the pocket station. It acted like a false swipe attack, leaving an opponent at 1hp. The thing is it always did max damage so if any number besides 9,999 was shown the enemy had 1hp left.

In FF4 there were a set of summons that were dropped as items from various monsters. I played FF4 on the SNES when it was new and various versions since then and have seen only three in like 30 years. The Imp/Goblin summon, the Bomb summon, and the Mindflayer summon. The Goblin summon was a REALLY weak physical attack, the bomb was like a Fire 1 spell at more than twice the MP cost. The only useful one was Mindflayer, it cast a 100% accurate stop effect on any enemy provided it wasn't immune to it. This allowed you to trait up body the most powerful enemies in the game allowing for super easy level ups. But good luck getting them. The items only drop from like type enemies and only have a 0.01% drop rate.

this makes me think of one summon back in...the american SNES version was called FF2, the one with Cecil, the Dark Knight who later become a Paladin, and his friend, Rydia, the "caller", who could learn new summons.
one somewhat obscure one was the "sylph" summon.
to learn that one, you have to go through an optional dungeon in the underground area.
this can be done at several points in the story, if you go there early on, you will see Yang recovering from his near-death experience.
it's an interesting spell, the Sylphs will STEAL health points from the enemy and distribute it among your party!

Tactics has a few that are fairly obscure, only appearing (at least as a summon) in Tactics and maybe one other place: Salamander, Lich, Cyclops. Not archetypically unique, to be sure, but I do find it interesting how Ivalice games in general have been so open to experimenting with the boundaries of the concept of “summoning”.
In Japanese, the concept of “summons” is much more defined linguistically - it is pretty much always either 召喚獣 “summoned beast” or 幻獣 “phantom beast” - and what that usually encompasses is often fairly narrow, mostly aligning with the concept of “deities”, either figuratively or literally depending on the game. But there is lots of interesting mechanical potential within the concept that has yet to be explored in depth, and that also allows for a lot more room in terms of variety of creatures that can fit into it. I’m a MASSIVE fan of the summoner class at the conceptual level, and I want to see them flourish more and not be shoehorned into such narrow roles!
I would love to see a Final Fantasy game with a summoner being the TRUE main character, and gameplay revolving heavily around summoning. XVI was an interesting interpretation of that idea, which I enjoyed immensely, although the execution was a bit lacking for me (very minor changes to the way certain actions are handled would have fixed a lot of my issues with that game, but obviously I don’t work for Square Enix lol). But I would love to instead see a game with a character more like a Yuna - a dedicated summoner - who can “control” their eidolons (or whatever they call it) in a more action-oriented gameplay style, sort of like Bayonetta but make it an RPG. OR, a more strategy-oriented game where summons have much more stratified abilities and traits and rewards the player with a rock-paper-scissors style system. Well, there are loads of systems that could make summoner-focused gameplay work - I just want to see them do it!

There's several conditions where Elidibus will cast Midgardsormr and one is if you lower yours or Elidibus' faith too much. Both are magic attacks and as such affected by shell but Zodiark's damage is heavily modified by the faith stat, high faith = high damage and vice versa. On the other hand Midgardsormr is only affected Elidibus' Magic Attack. And while the base power of Zodiark is 4x that of Midgardsormr by lowering faith you can get the damage down to the point where Midgardsormr is the stronger spell. At this point the AI will chose to cast Midgardsormr instead. Faith being an easily adjustable stat means that one can easily overshoot and lower faith too much in a bid to learn the Zodiark summon and thus forces Elidibus to use Midgardsormr instead.

Thats cool about FF6 and the auction house. I never actually beat FF6 as the game made it way to hard for me, but when I make my way to 6 in the Pixel Remaster I will keep that in mind lol. Also I never knew that about 8. I have the remaster so I will also tr that when J get to it again.

I wouldn't consider Midgardsormr a summon in FFT. Specifically because it lacks the Summon Orb animation when being used. Zodiark has those, as seen in your footage, and is of course a summon that can be learned by a summoner. Furthermore, Summoners can learn summons when they are casted on them (like Zodiark), and so if a Summoner had Midgardsormr cast on them and they survived, would they not be prompted to learn it if the attack was indeed a summon? In addition, its area of effect is a single space which is inconsistent with all other summons in the game.
The description of the attack does say "Attack by summoning a spectral serpent". I would need to see the Japanese to see if it is the same type of "summon" they use when referring to the use of the typical summon monsters in the game. I really don't think they are the same though.
Anyhow, I'm a big fan of yours and big FF fan in general even though I generally focus on making Zelda Content. I didn't know about Mini-Mog!

Not sure if I would consider Hecatonchier “obscure” as a summon. Yes, it didn’t really show up as a summon too many other places, but in XIII…well, not only are the eidolons more memorable from how they’re obtained and locked to characters, but the most optimal uses for them were taking down oretoises. A job where you also want Vanille’s Death.
She may have gotten a very rare summon, but it’s the one you were most likely to use if you went for completion.

There are actually four: And the fourth one is the Cocatrice. The Cocatrice was "dummied out" of the original "Final Fantasy 2" version of Final Fantasy 4 on the SNES, but on the Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 1, and Nintendo DS, it is obtainable as a random drop by defeating almost any bird-like enemy - even the one's surrounding Baron Castle at the beginning of the game. The Goblin (Imp), Bomb, and Cocatrice are also obtainable in "Interlude" in the Complete Works on PSP (sorry, no Mindflayer (Mage)! However, all four are also obtainable in Rydia's Chapter and those of other characters in The Afteryears. I've sunk SO MUCH TIME into getting those item drops in almost every version of these games that I own. Being an ability-completionist can kind of suck sometimes. LOL!
