If you learn that in Irish, 'mh' and 'bh' are pronounced like 'v', and when 's' is followed by 'e' or 'i' it turns into a 'sh' sound... then you'll do fine on most Irish names!😉
I know how her name is correctly pronounced because I have been hearing film critics say her name ever since ATONEMENT in 2007. The trick is to remember how to SPELL her name correctly. So I just made up how her name would sound if the Irish spelling were pronounced as an English word: Say Oh Ersy : SA O IR SE.🙂
This seems to be a favourite of interviewers, how do you pronounce this Scottish/Irish/Welsh name/placename? At least this is less condescending that they usually are
@ParaplegicKeanuReeves dunno, if I was on tour promoting something I cared a lot about and had put a lot of work into, I think I'd be insulted if all I got from interviewers night after night was "haha funny language go brr"
I didn't notice she is the actress in Hanna, mostly because she is an adult now. And may I ask, really pretty. (Like hoping to go between her legs pretty LOL)
That's a good question. The answer is that the names were spoken by Celts and written down by Christian missionaries whose main language was Latin. The scribes did the best they could to capture the unfamiliar vowels as sequences of Latin vowels. So the diphthong "we" was spelled "aoi" (why not "ui"? I have no idea), and the sound "v" was made as "mh" (m séimhiú, for pedants). It was a huge mess.
@skilletman16 are you a native english speaker? Cause if u are, why dont you spell english just as it sounds. Noticed how english has different spellings with same letters depending on words and even letters that have been left silent during the ages?
Just a note only take what resonates I don’t believe in love at 1st sight so I have no reason to entertain 3rd party situations.. I am beautiful (2 yrs with a great personal trainer so far), educated (finished my bachelor’s degree late at 31 but still got it)and I have a good career and a great place now.. If you feel you don’t have options work on making yourself a better choice the other options will come 💕🎉
What is it with chat show hosts that the only thing they can talk about with Irish guests is how to pronounce Irish names! Get over it! Paddy O'Gorman? Now how do you pronounce that "Chatshow Ponce!"
Stephen isn't being rude. It is a late night show, nothing serious. Stephen Colbert is Irish. Late night shows aren't meant to be very serious. Saoirse has been mistakenly pronounced it is just a fun little skit. It helps people learn how to say her name correctly. Every culture/accent/language is interesting. Saoirse has never found it offensive.

Exactly. Once you know the general rules of the language its easy enough to decipher with a bit of common sense.
I read what you wrote and I fell down the stairs.
You need to know A LOT more than that to pronounce most of them.
Like Siobhan!
Mallaidh is pronounced Molly
"YOU... go to Hell."
😂😂😂
She's pretty eloquent! I love her!
Met someone named Caoimhe
Was at camp. She won the talent show by spelling her name after getting the judges to try and guess how it’s spelled.
😂
Really pretty lady

I don't see any of the pronunciation differences being insulting at all. I find them interesting and funny, no matter the language.
Only if you're a ❄️ you would find it insulting 💀

I didn't get a single one right 😂
I’m not Irish but I think the names are beautiful ❤
Can we please ask her different questions 😂
He: You do look a little bit like a Suarez...
She: I do! 😅😂
Lol.
It's always fun seeing her in these shows. So entertaining!
Shes so cool
Hanna was a killer movie.
I didn't notice she is the actress in Hanna, mostly because she is an adult now.

I said "Sigh a Barn" for 40 years.
Then I learned it was "Sha-von" .... but I still say it incorrectly, but in an ironic way.
Old habits die hard 😂
And ironically the well known Irish name SHIVAWN is pronounced 'SIOBHAN'... 😐
If the Irish used the Cyrillic alphabet, it would make more sense.
No it wouldn't, we use our own gaelic alphabet, and phonetic
I had a girl in my class who’s name was sadhbh. S-eye-v
Suarez is my last name lol
lol my niece is called Caoimhe. My son can’t say it so she’s now been nicknamed keykey 😂
If you watched Succession, you know how to pronounce Siobhan ❤
Knew an Irish guy named Eoin, pronounced Owen 😅
The printout on the screen is hilarious and completely wrong.
I think Liverpool's keeper Kelleher has a male version of the last one
Among the top actors now,
Sersha is nice
Surprised they didn't have Aisling
Mhaire = Vari 😂
Knew a guy named A Aron and a girl Dee Nice.
Niamh was going to be my youngest’s middle name. Until her dad found out how it was pronounced compared to how it’s spelled. I lost a battle. 😅
😅
Shiobhan best bartender
You're god damn right.
❤
not weird. it is how you pronounce the names
Why not spell it like it sounds?😳
Because it's a different language, traditional Irish isn't for the English-speaking tongue

They talk about whatever the person is promoting also. It is a late night show, don't take it so seriously.
why is it ridiculous?? 😭 i get so annoyed when these people act like their culture/accent/languages is the only thing that exists

Americans talking about how other accents sound is very hilarious
