Song Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
Here we stand
Like an Adam and an Eve
Waterfalls
The Garden of Eden
Two fools in love
So beautiful and strong
The birds in the trees
Are smiling upon them
From the age of the dinosaurs
Cars have run on gasoline
Where, where have they gone?
Now, it's nothing but flowers
[Chorus 1]
There was a factory
Now there are mountains and rivers
You got it, you got it
We caught a rattlesnake
Now we got something for dinner
We got it, we got it
There was a shopping mall
Now it's all covered with flowers
You've got it, you've got it
If this is paradise
I wish I had a lawnmower
You've got it, you've got it
[Verse 2]
Years ago
I was an angry young man
And I'd pretend
That I was a billboard
Standing tall
By the side of the road
I fell in love
With a beautiful highway
This used to be real estate
Now it's only fields and trees
Where, where is the town
Now, it's nothing but flowers
[Bridge 1]
The highways and cars
Were sacrificed for agriculture
I thought that we'd start over
But I guess I was wrong
[Chorus]
Once there were parking lots
Now it's a peaceful oasis
You've got it, you've got it
This was a Pizza Hut
Now it's all covered with daisies
You got it, you got it
I miss the honky tonks,
Dairy Queens, and 7-Elevens
You got it, you got it
And as things fell apart
Nobody paid much attention
You got it, you got it
[Chorus]
I dream of cherry pies,
Candy bars, and chocolate chip cookies
You got it, you got it
We used to microwave
Now we just eat nuts and berries
You got it, you got it
This was a discount store,
Now it's turned into a cornfield
You've got it, you've got it
Don't leave me stranded here
I can't get used to this lifestyle

Yesterday, my father died. As a baby at 3 years old this was the first song I ever remember in my whole life. Dad would play "Naked" for us all the time but we babies danced the most to this. I called it the chocolate chip cookie song. All my life we would dance, he would point at me and say you got it, you got it in every day life.
my mother got us tickets to American Utopia, we were born a day apart so it was our bday gift. Last month we met David Byrne and I got to tell him how much we love him. Our last concert of many....how fitting.
Now my father is gone forever, peacefully but suddenly in his sleep. I had to write the inscription on his urn for my grieving mom. I wrote "nothing but flowers"
I love you dad. I will play this every huge moment of my life for you form now on.
Sorry for your loss, Lee... but I must say that your memory and what you shared with your father and family is purely touching. Thanks for sharing.
@@DTC_0 thank you so much its the most special memory of my life...the gift of music

Memories, beautiful memories!
That was beautiful. Sorry for your loss.
Every Talking Head song feels like a one hit wonder, I'm always amazed how many incredible hits they have.
30 years ago! amazing masterpiece
They are bloody geniuses. That's what they are.
That's the best description of their music I've ever heard!
@Luke Skyballer Hits are for adolescents.
Nothing NOTHING but flowers and memories!!! All. ALL that Life is....
Conscious surprise and coping reacting somehow hoping...something....then soon enough...it's done flip over never to be redone. One time around.
"If this is paradise I wish I had a lawnmower" - you don't get more David Byrne than that.
I always felt that part is a jab at Joni Mitchells song Big Yellow Taxi when she says "they paved paradise and put up a parking lot" as the whole songs a very practical rebuttle of idealist enviormentalism.
@@alexrinaldi3257 On the money
Great contribution- needless to say, year later. Chicago Illinois granny.
Genuinely
@@alexrinaldi3257 but this song still had environmentalist from a sardonic perspective. They reveal a ton of stats at the end about how weâre fucking up the earth
âAnd as things fell apart, nobody paid much attention.â
Epitaph of the 21st century.
And also an opening quote in Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho. Why I'm here.
@@MGSVxBreakpoint that too. I found that book super disturbing, but really interesting.
I was JUST telling someone the same thing the other day.
I don't know WTF that's supposed to mean. From where I sit, everyone is obsessed about something, everyone is butt-hurt about something, everyone has an opinion-whether they know about the subject or not. Indifference doesn't seem like a real problem.
Amen đ
A collaboration between Talking Heads and Johnny Marr is something I never thought I would see and I love it
Funny I have liked this Talking Heads song best since a college art teacher played it like everyday in class... Never realized about Johnny Marr being on it tho! Love his playing and now it totally makes sense why this song sounds a little more special.
I have loved this song since I bought the album ÂŽNakedÂŽ. I never had a clue that the genius, JM, played guitar on the track until I saw this video!
Johnny also plays the 12 string, that jangly sound you hear is all him đ€
One of the most underrated bands. This is my favorite song by them
Mine too. Love everything on Naked.
This song was 32 years ahead of its time. Look at abandoned Pizza Huts. They're everywhere!
Now it's covered with daisies...đŠ
Now there's more Topper's and other chains that weren't around in '88.
yeah but there's a brand new pizza hut around the corner from here...
Now they are located in strip malls delivery and carry out....you got it-you got it!
Who eats this shxt?
Johnny Marr's echo-like guitar during the chorus is mystically astounding. It begins at 1:36 again at 3:20. And again at 3:40 through the end of the song. Truly amazing.
Stunning song but I could never eat a rattlesnake much less catch one
@Gavril Matz in Johnny's book he describes his first session with the Talking Heads. This song in particular. He was nervous, even second guessing himself. In fact, he had to leave the studio and take a walk around the block to clear this head. This is what he came up with upon return. Brilliant.
Did he use a 12-String for this one? Sounds like a 12-String, at least during the chorus (immediately following the "You got it" hook)
Actually it first appears at 1:36 in the first verse, you're quite right :)
That jangly guitar part is THE best part of an otherwise terrific song. I've listened to this tune a million times just for that jangle. Love it! Not a guitarist, but I think Marr's using a 12 string Rickenbacker on this one?
Timeless and haunting song that only gets better with time. Should be the theme song for The 100 TV show.
And it REALLY FITS 2020 to a âT.â
@@garycraig6506 it's helping.
Except nowadays we wouldn't necessarily replace human built up environment with 'agriculture' or 'fields', you would need to fit 'rewilding' into the song instead.
Isn't though, David is just a musical genius
Ive seen your channel before
iâve gone to sleep away camp for the past 6 years. we werenât allowed devices except for an iPod and i brought my moms. this song was on her iPod and i remember my first or second year of camp i spent countless nights listening to this trying to analyze the lyrics. i was only 7 or 8 at the time and though i may not have fully understood the song, i couldâve spent hours just picturing it. i loved the thought of the world being covered in flowers. i would give anything to relive those warm summer nights tucked into bed, the rest of my bunk mates sleeping around me, not a care in the world, and listening to the most wonderful music.
Love it
I hope you pick up a guitar someday, and I mean that.
Probably my favorite Talking Heads song of all. Futuristic and sarcastic, isn't it?
Genius.

Iâm 46 years old and 80âs music is my childhood, but a year ago I was at stoplight and the car next to me had their windows rolled up playing this song super loud. The driver was a 20 something year old. I could hear the baseline and the guitar riff. It was cool to see the younger generation appreciating classic stuff
My teenagers are fans!
That is such a great story!!! I grew up in Palo Alto, CA in the 70s and 80s but this song was really hot when I lived in Australia in the late 80s and I've just rediscovered it. Awesome memories.đ
probably the most cheerful song about post-apocalyptic living, lol
Lol
Yup
Itâs far from cheerful. Itâs actually ironic in nature. We may think we want to go back to nature and be all environmental, but we actually depend on modern day tech and conveniences such a Pizza Hut for food instead a rattlesnake, a microwave instead of nuts and berries.
@@BeanisBags Can something not be both ironic and cheerful? How would you describe the music, rhythm, and beat of this song?

Johnny Marr tells a very interesting story about this song. It was his first recording session after The Smiths broke up, and he was really nervous. He did a great job!
"And as things fell apart, nobody paid much attention."
Hello Somebody
julsHz hello back at ya. Greetings from Australia
Like many of Talking Heads' videos this needs to be watched time and time again to appreciate the artistry and breadth of it. And pausing it at every "you got it, you got it" to read and fully digest the on screen messages/statistics gives it even more depth. After all these years this is still one of my favourite songs by the Heads

Lol after all these years you should have a new perspective on all those statistics. The rainforests didn't disappear, and the women in Finland did stop having babies. Their government imported criminals to replace them.

Hey, it's a funny song, no need to find any serious meaning
Tina Weymouth and her Bass Guitar is one of the best in the Music Industry. Johnny Marr is Unrivalled. Kirsty MacColl, well what can be said that hasn't already been said.... Simply a Genius
The lyrics are just genius. Anybody can write a song complaining about consumerism, excessive urbanization and pollution but the brilliant idea here is that the complaining comes from the opposite point of view.
Somebody please make a remake of this video with updated statistics! I wonder how much insanely higher the figures are.

Makes me think they could well have gone on to do one or two fantastic albums on the 1990s
I just love the concept of this song. It's an "ironic" environmentalist message.
Also, Clerks 2 brought me here.

Tge silly âfactsâ that it brings up definitely support that. Thatâs a really interesting interpretation
It's a shame we didn't have any warning of today's environmental crisis, like 30 years ago or something...

Johnny Marr. It's all about Johnny Marr on this song.
Guess I didn't see the video till recently, as I didn't realize it was him till he talked about it on SiriusXM. Now it couldn't be more obvious and absolutely makes the song along with Byrne's uncanny ability to predict possible futures based on our greed and laziness (Life During Wartime is about a future where we're society is crumbling amid widespread poverty but technological wealth).

way ahead of The Great Curve, one might say! đ
One of the best talking heads tracks of all, still relevant even more today. the Talking Heads were ahead of their time for sure.
Back in 1988 when this song came out, I thought it was the best piece of dystopian fiction ever set to music. Now it just sounds like a pleasant pipe dream. :(
back then we were also singing "I won't be coming home tonight, my generation will put it right. We're not just making promises that we know we'll never keep." Seems we weren't much better than the generation(s) before us and I (still) can't tell you why this is a land of confusion.

Two lyricists control all the the creative interests from the Nordic countries and auto-tune. They the industry only want short gains, not a musical movement that can change the course of creativity/talent of musically inclined parties involved .
One of the most up- beat songs. Makes you feeling good however bad you felt before.
All the band members are fantastic on this one. Tina's bass licks will always be stuck in my mind.
I just concluded a Contemporary Arts class in Undergrad school. For my last discussion, I decided to connect the works of Bruce Conner to David Byrne. I tried to correlate the two.
