- The Dark Side of Aristocrats in 1700's
News of the Times Episode 290 | 1729 & 1768
Our first aritocrat case from 1729 created a scandal that went on for decades. Lady Abergavenny has become intimately close with their nearest neighbour 7 miles away. As suspicions rise with the secretary to Lord Abergavenny, the Lady is caught “in the act”.
Our second aristocrat case from 1768 concerns Lord Baltimore - the family who owned Maryland. Lord Baltimore, a confessed “libertine”, admires the turkish way of life involving harems which Lord Baltimore incorporates into his houses in England. Acting very much like an 18th century version of Jeffrey Epstein, this case was the headline of its day as one of his victims incredibly fights back.
Two outrageous cases touching upon the dark side of the ruling classes in the 1700’s is today’s episode of Frightful Fridays.
Hosted by Robin Coles.

Thank you. 😊
Infuriating! I despise this Lord Baltimore! Poor miss Woodcock, I wonder what happened to the poor lady? It's a sad story. But the news of the times crew did the usual excellent job of reporting! Thumbs up indeed!
Thank you - how kind! Sarah, after the trial, her reputation intact despite the trial, is married 1 month later to her beau who stood by her! 💖 Hurrah! Lord Baltimore whose reputation was destroyed, sold off everything and moved to Naples with his harem where quite possibly he went through some poor Italian versions of sarah. 😔
The second story is so horrific and unjust. Thanks for finding these fascinating stories, I find myself looking forward to the days when you broadcast a new tale.❤❤❤😊
Thank you - how very kind! We are never sure how well recieved the much older stories will be regarded - the language can be jilted. We really like these older stories - it is a reminder how little things have changed sometimes😉. Not sure if you are interested - we upload to our sister channel, Chronicle of the Times, @chronicleofthetimes2024, on those days when News of the Times is "resting". It shows a "lighter" side to history. thank you for your kind comment and support!🙏
Hearing about these older cases is enjoyable. Few YT channels bother to explore crimes from previous centuries.
Thank you - really glad you liked! We are never quite sure if these Georgian stories will be popular - we know the language can be a bit stilted. Thank you for your kind comment and support!🙏
sitting on my couch and recovering from a cold listening to these stories. Love love it.. Oh and the scandalous behavior... OH MY!
Thank you! Glad you liked! Aristocrats behaving badly... we have a lot of these stories! Some of the priveleged do not actually understand their privelege. thank you - our very best wishes for your speedy recovery!🤧
Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed it very much. 😊
Thank you - very glad you liked it! 🤗We were not sure if this would be enjoyed as it is low on the death and murder aspect. We are making up for that tomorrow. 😉
Thank you. Enjoyed.
Thank you - very glad you liked! Wishing you and family a lovely weekend.🙌
These two cases of adultery and sexual abuse are "horrifically" disturbing. First case, aristocratic married Lady A. who was having an indiscreet love affair with her neighbor. I'm surprised that the husband Lord A. had servants that would have gotten so personally involved in his wife's affair. Usually, servants would keep quiet because they didn't want to be fired. It's somewhat mysterious to me about Lady A.'s death one month after having her baby. Do you know whatever happened to her baby? Second case, what a "despicable," man Lord Baltimore was to have people recruit young women for his deviant sexual desires. I really didn't believe that Sarah would receive justice in this case because Lord Baltimore was a aristocrat and that his co-conspirators would be spared, also. Do you know whatever happened to Sarah Woodcock? Great investigation, presentation, backstories, illustrations, photos and videos, too. P.S. These two cases are what happens even in 2024, especially the second case. Take care 🦋
Thank you - glad you liked! 🤗Lady A: you are right, the servants did not get involved although they knew about it for quite some time. The secretary to Lord A though was on a different level and it is understandable that he would have pursued. Historically, one thoery is that Lord A knew all about her affair but just didn't really care. Once however, the affair became so public, he had no choice but to publicly pursue - honour demanded it. Yes, Lady A's death is fairly "convenient" - it is hard to relay just HOW huge the scandal was. Nursery rhymes were made up of her that street children were singing - it was that bad. 🙄As for the child - we are not sure, but it seems to have been officially recognised is Lord A's son, although he would have had very little to do with the child serving so closely to the King. 👑Lord B and Sarah! Sarah actually came out of the scandal ok - rather remarkable given the circumstances! She married her beau she had been seeing - he completely stood by her - 1 month after the trial! 💖Lord B. his reputation in tatters, sold off everything and moves himself and his Harem to live in Naples. naples! Why is it always Naples? Echoes of debauched Tiberius here....🤔
I have to say that Lord Abergavenny has VERY loyal staff!! A lot of employees would have gossped, but not got involved!! Also, Lady Abergavenny's sudden death was most mysterious!! I wonder who the father of her child was, and what happened to the poor mite?!
As for Lord Baltimore, he's nothing but a pervert and a defiler of young women!! What a DISGUSTING creature!! 😡😡🤢🤮
Thanks for yet another INTRIGUING video, Robin!! ❤💞💖👍💕💙
Thank you - glad you liked! 🤗Lady Abergavenny - it could have been death associated with post birth, but the timing really does seem quite suspicious... Yes, who WAS the father? There was speculation that actually, Lord Abergavenny had known about the affair, had not really cared, but when it was thrown in his face he had no choice but to act. As for Lord Baltimore - his reputation was actually in ruins. He sold off everything and went to live in Naples - with his harem, That whole case reminded us so much of the tragic jeffrey Epstein case. Thank you, as always, for your tremendous support!🙌
@@newsofthetimesApparently, Lord Baltimore had about 5 illegitimate children, who he actually provided for!! His descendants have apparently done VERY well for themselves!!
@@nadiabrook7871 Well done you! 🙌 We did not know how many illigitimate children he had (did he himself know one wonders...) 🙄but we did know he made much effort ensuirng they were provided for. He started doing his will a few years befiore his actual death. But you know, he could not repair the damage to his name. Thank you! Much appreciated your research! Thank you for sharing with the community!😊 If we were visiting Baltimore (which we have heard is very lovely) we would be looking at it with a whole new perspective 😉
@@newsofthetimes Indeed!! I've heard Baltimore is a VERY BEAUTIFUL place!!
I'm SOOOOOO glad that Sarah Woodcock had her happy ending after all!!👍💖💞👏💕
@@nadiabrook7871 We have heard the same about Baltimore - but it is interesting how it got its name. Yes - hurrah for Sarah! We do like a happy ending🤗
Boy, Abergavenny is getting a lot of action!😏
Or, if were the lord, not!😉
Re:Sarah Appalling story. She had no recourse against Baltimore at all.
Yes - we find it rather incredible that she tried to fight it out with Lord Baltimore, Althougth how the trial ended was not a surprise - it was kind of a surprise! Even at the time, he was seen as guilty, even if he got off legally. He was forced to leave England and moved to Naples (a la tiberius), with his harem, and continued his debauched life away from prying English eyes. And Sarah, bless her, was not abandonned by her beau at the time who married her 1 month after the trial. 💖
According to my families oral history, a German hot shot’s son, impregnated my ancestors’ daughter and to avoid the scandal, the hot shot paid for the family to emigrate to America.
Wow! That should be an episode!🙌
This at a time when starving people who ‘stole’ bread were deported or worse!
Absolutely. 👍One can understand the desire of so many people at the time to escape and go off to a new country, despite expected hardships. It also punctuates "All men are created equal". All very understandable - why wouldn't you want to leave?🙌
🙏🙏🙏
