- In this episode, I start my journey through Nigeria and I'm on my way to Abuja to sort out a visa for Cameroon. On the way, I pass many, many checkpoints - and you never know what the response will be, or who is trying to stop you on the road. So I try to keep riding, but sometimes, I have to stop..

Alone in Nigeria!? Cop asking for money is far from the worst thing, which could've happened.
Yeah, so scary.. Espesially for east asian
Especially for a woman...in a rural place like that there are plenty of places to hide a body...not that anyone would come looking for her...pulling out that roll of money at that gas station wasn't the smartest move. For her safety she'd be better off staying home and watching other people's videos or take a man with you next time.

Noraly, your reaction to the man who asked for money was perfect. Made him change his mind very quickly! Safe travels to you!
I love the way Noraly handled herself, what a champ. The man only let her go because he was told my the other smaller officer, that another officer in the parked car said they should let her go. These guys are a disgrace.

I lived and worked in a small town in Nigeria from 1979-81, and rode a motorcycle to get around and also travel around the country. "What did you bring me?" is like a common greeting. I asked my Nigerian friends how to answer it, and they said to laugh it off as Noraly did, or respond with a joke, or say "Next time." Everyone who goes from point A to point B gets asked that, not just white women! And obviously people can't be carrying around gifts for every single person they meet, especially on a motorcycle. Nigerian culture is very "in your face" and extroverted compared to other countries in West Africa, which I also visited. I had to get used to it, but it was a relief to return to my introverted side when I left.
You said it all,as a Nigerian I can relate to that.

@@davidtorok9542 the most stupid comment of the year
When I worked in Nigeria I learned to keep a $20 in my pocket and hide the rest of my money. That way when the inevitable demand for “gratuity” came from the police or other government official, I could plead that the $20 was all I had. It happened a lot. Those stereotypes don’t come from nowhere.
I used to do the same in Baja California, Mexico.
@@rick262 Yep, I'm 66 years old and I usually do the same when I travel in my own country Romania. And to be honest, the same thing happened to me almost everywhere in Eastern Europe. In my opinion, this kind of behavior can be generalized with few exceptions and, more or less so in sight and imperative, in almost all the world to those who hold the power of a weapon and the authority of the position in their country.
With the rebel groups causing havoc and danger in Nigeria, I really wonder why you decided to go there. I guess you don't want to miss out on any country, but this one is incredibly risky. I'm sure you make it through okay as we get these videos on a time lag. Please continue to be safe! You are a remarkable human being! ❤

Don't worry about it man, the people seem super friendly I would love to visit sometime
Don't worry. The UK police do it too. Here in Britain, they don't expicitly ask you for money for themselves, like we saw in this video, but they try to find something with which they can "fine you" with - any excuse to claim you are "breaking the law' so that they can collect revenue from people. And, it's not just police - traffic wardens, environmental enforcement officers, council workers, etc. do this also. Corrupt people are everywhere across the face of our beautiful earth.
To a great extent, this video shows how peaceful, adventurous, happy and accommodating Nigerians are. This is different from the negative and abusive picture that is always shown to the outside world about the country. Every nation have its own good and bad so everyone can have a positive perspective (without discriminating) of The country.

Just trying his luck! Nothing sinister about it!
It was the same 20 years ago in Nigeria, it is the same now. Any officer in uniform (policemen, soldiers, customs, immigration, guard, even firemen) demanded money. it got really scary when civilians with rifles did the same on the suburbs of Lagos
These roadside beggars are so kind...and professional along with their uniform. Samminamiyaa yaee yaeee😅
You are brave for this. As a Nigerian American , I went to Nigeria this summer. I traveled from Lagos to Ilorin by car and the amount of corrupt police officers that we had to bribe was unbelievable. Why don't they give her more of a hard time? Could they get in trouble if they bother a foreigner?
Roads in Nigeria are not safe to travel especially for foreigners. many employ personal armed bodyguards.
the line between bravery and stupidity is thin
As a Gambian residing in the UK, as I watch this video from an unbiased standpoint, it is evident that there are still exceptional and courteous police officers who warmly embrace everyone, as showcased in these videos.
However, there are still many corrupt and morally compromised individuals in the police force, hindering the progress and growth not only of the country but also of Africa as a whole.
I saw mostly smiling welcoming faces in this video and one dick who just thought he could try it on. I`ve had holidays in Gambia and Kenya, got out and about among the locals and most people are lovely but you will encounter the ones who just want money for nothing, that`s the same story wherever you go in the world

Tbh I’m surprised only one officer asked for money. The rest seemed extremely friendly and polite
📷 all around her plus her energy dissipates to the people because of her years of traveling her presence demands reverence.
It's because they noticed she's white, so most of them had to be nice. This means our police have the tendency to be polite, they just choose who they can show that side to
Me too
Most police officers saw camera, that's why they didn't harass you for money
Which nice? They are not nice. They are all part of the plan. As far as I'm concerned they are armed robbers. Traveling in Nigeria is a dangerous activity that could end your life. If the bandits don't get you, you won't miss the kidnappers and if they don't get you the police will definitely make your life miserable.
Corruption exists in most countries.. What sets Nigeria (and most African nations) apart is the sheer shamelessness with which money is demanded..
Its a rare mix of begging and extortion..
In kenya 🇰🇪 it's much better on a bike you won't be flagged off this often
Sure, but not all forms of corruption are equal. In places like Western Europe for example you have cases like that some politician will be invited to a free vacation in exchange for giving some company a government deal, or stuff like insider trading. That is corruption too, but you won't have policemen and bureaucrats demand or even take money from regular citizens.
So yes, there is corruption in most countries, but not this kind of corruption.
Corruption is in all countries but different levels of corruption.

I had the exact same experience at Abuja International Airport after arrival. An official (lady) at the final security check just before the airport's exit confiscated my suitcase and said "Give me something". When I told her I don't understand, she said again, "Give me something, anything", and refused to release my suitcase until I complied. All of this happened right in front of several heavily armed security officers (maybe military), all of them heard this, but none of them interjected, even when I protested. I am Nigerian. I was traveling out lately and I was asked for money by about 5-6 different staffs at different checkpoint. When I told my friend about the experience, he told me that they were all in it together. It was a business trip and I was concerned that the shuttle sent by the company to pick me up would leave without me. My phone couldn't connect to the local network so I couldn't call. Your remarkable viewership from Nigeria, a nation with a population exceeding 200 million, speaks volumes about the support and interest your journey has garnered. Unlike other countries that might seek to influence your narrative for image management, Nigeria stands by the authenticity of your experiences. As the most populous black nation, Nigeria's reputation may sometimes be overshadowed by negative stereotypes, but your journey highlights the positive realities. We wish you nothing but success in all your future endeavors.
Wow! Brave lady. Even I as a Nigerian in Nigeria wouldn't dare try such a ride because of the insecurity in the land. But here you are teaching a coward like me how to do it. Congratulations, Madam. Safe journey as you journey through

I did 6 years in Nigeria thanks to my dad. Very rich culturally, but anybody in any sort of administrative position is going to be crazy corrupt. A lot of those unofficial checkpoints are just off duty soldiers and cops trying to shake down motorists. No shame!
hope you had a good experience in our country

How you can a good experience in Nigeria, the most corrupt country in the world.
And why shouldn't armed black people manning roadblocks in africa behave like Africans and demand bribes? Just like the police in the US with civil asset forfeiture who take ALL your cash?

That was an embarrassment for an officer and frankly, disgusting. Carrying oneself in such situation by standing your ground without invoking aggression in other people is a skill not many people possess and you clearly have mastered it. I strive to achieve that skill day because I'd lose my cool as soon as they try to extort me for money. Be careful out there, Noraly. I wish you a safe journey.
I wonder if that officer still has his job. Are consequences in Nigeria at the moment too much to hope for?
Unless you have a bigger Army, never lose your cool.

it's not a skill. it's cowardice, and kinda self humiliating to pretend and laugh when clearly ur being abused.

My weirdest encounter with police happened in Bulgaria. On a skiing trip to Pamporovo we were stopped by armed police at a checkpoint. I had my wife and two young boys in the car. They asked if I had any drugs, when I said no they smiled as I had misunderstood, they asked did I want drugs.
Yeah I don't believe that. You probably don't understand bulgarian very well or you're making stuff up.

This trip must be amazing. This lady is fearless. I wonder does she ever be afraid or avoid certain things on her trips. Looks like she doesn't mind where to go what to do.
First, I'm so happy your channel found me. I'm a Black American who just returned from visiting Nigeria for the first time two weeks ago, and I fell in love with this country. Yes, there is "police corruption," but I learned that even that problem among some, not all, officers, as the video shows, is due to economic issues. No excuse, just a reality. Beyond that, this video actually proves that the vast majority of Nigerians you encounter are grateful, peaceful, and welcoming people. Noraly did not encounter any threats at all... something I found to be refreshing while there. I live in a large, modern metropolitan city here in the U.S. and trust me when I say there are neighborhoods here that Noraly would not have been safe traversing through with such amazing technological gear. In fact, her Alaska would probably have new bike owners. Facts. Again, Nigeria is a place to be loved, honored, and respected as a country with great culture, beautiful land, and a developing economy. I can envision how living conditions there could only improve with care and support from the world community...not disdain and ignorance from those who only grab a few negative snippets from a short video. Keep up your pilgrimages, Noraly. I will also be watching you now. One Love.❤
What part of Nigeria did you visit?
