      thanks Steven! and thanks for your cameo in the film! these last 5 years have been really fun. I still remember back in the day when I was jumping higher than you and you were asking me for advice. Lol. That has all changed just a little! :)hope to get a dunk session with you soon when we're both healthy!!! Happy New Year man!

      Great video! Very motivational. I was wonder, what is your max squat and max deadlift? The weight you are moving does not look that impressive (I promise I'm trying to be constructive). A man of your stature probably has the potential to lift 450 lbs + in either the squat or deadlift. And these gains will directly correlate to more inches on your vertical.

    35, 5’ 9” (barely), started my journey early last year after years as a runner, and finally back into the sport I love. I’ve had ups and downs, peaked at 1 inch below the rim, popped a lumbar disc and am still recovering. I’ve learned a ton esp with form/recovery and I’m gonna keep learning. My vert is still down from its peak and I’m not in the 10 club yet but I ain’t stopping, esp after getting a huge boost from you!!

    Hey Andy this is Shane SLaM wise, i just wanted to say the powerful message of passion and fire you showed in this Documentary literally brought back all my favorite dunk moments of my 15 years of dunking. I just stopped dunking a year ago due to knee problems but dunking was the love of my life and got me thru so many tough times in life and even now i check everyday to see what new dunk videos are posted. Your Dunk you made in your contest was everything! proof that all those sacrifices and early workouts and training pays off if you want it bad enough and that message can relate to anything people have a passion for in life. Just wanted to say your Story inspires people who might not reply to you but you have left a positive light on this earth and i am sure your kids will one day see that their dad was something special.

    You just inspired me even more Andy! I haven't been able to dunk for years now. Gave up basketball years bk when I could actually dunk and lost the ability to ne able to throw down over tye last 10 or so years cos I stopped playing. Lately I've been wanting to start training again to trim down and get that feeling back of gliding through the air and throwin it down again. So now I'm getting bk into a jump program to build my jump again to be able to dunk, just to remember what it used to feel like and feel explosive again. Your video is exactly what I needed! Never too late for anyone to follow their dreams is a massive message & a great one. You're the man Andy! God bless you & your family, and much love from Australia!

    Pretty interesting doc, love the message at the end, but to me the best part that made me laugh is seeing the lower thirds come up "Good rebounder but major hacker" "Good shooter major ball hog" because if you ever played pick up ball, everyone has these kinds of descriptions of guys on the court, or ridiculous nicknames. Shout out to a guy I played with we called "Tackleberry" because he looked like Tackleberry from Police Academy. At 41 I will say youtube definitely inspires to achieve and push yourself again, so I can relate to this doc. Great work!

    I knew this was going to be very good, but it was better than expected. Great message. Loved your performance in that contest too - those were difficult dunks, was cool to see that you took the risk and attempted those. First one landed HARD. The commentary from your ex-teammates/friends/children/Kilganon was such a great touch, was so fun to watch; excellent editing. Finally that Jordan Kilganon jersey (from his lost and found dunk) is something special, frame it; it's going to be akin to a Babe Ruth home run baseball many years from now.. :D
    superb.
    athletic improvement is art. everyone should just support each other and go-get-it.
    wtf @ your elbow? 8|

    • @thedunkcamp
      @thedunkcamp  Před 7 lety +4

      Thanks Andrew!!! Great idea on the jersey. The only time I ever wore it was the dunk contest and probably won't ever wear it again (unless maybe I try to do this again :) But, yeah I should frame it!I've told you before but was a fan of yours back in the day and if you ever get sick of this running stuff, I would love to see more of your epic dunking videos! Thanks again man!

    • @adarqui
      @adarqui Před 7 lety

      Just frame it, and if you do another dunk contest, take it out of the frame to dunk in it, then put it back.. lmao! That's what I would do :D
      Also thanks alot man! I miss making videos. I loved just going out and trying to crush some simple dunks, then trying to think of how to mix them up all weird/slick. I really want to figure out how to incorporate jumping back into my routine but it's tough given how focused I am on running.. I've been taking steps toward that direction though recently: bought my first pair of kobe's, started lifting again :D So it's on my radar.
      The best thing about this running thing is that there is so much to improve: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1km, 1 mile, 2 miles, 5k, 10k, miles in an hour, half marathon, marathon etc. Then there's the competition aspect; there are races every weekend which can get you really amp'd up and easily running at PR levels - and they also have age groups if you don't win overall. So even if you're 90 years old, you can still compete in an age group - even set age group records etc. I think the longevity aspect of running is what draws me to it the most.. I see older people at races who can really fly - ie 55 year olds running 16:xx 5k's or 4:40 miles. That's ridiculous and inspiring.
      I imagine eventually we'll see more longevity in the dunk game now though.. All of these young dunk addicts aren't going to stop just because they turn 50. And maybe they'll just dunk on 8-9' when they are 70-90 years old in the future. lol. 90-99 years old age group record BTL on 9'6" by Air Up There... 8|
      peace!!!

    • @thedunkcamp
      @thedunkcamp  Před 7 lety +2

      adarqui oh yeah! I can see it now! Kilganon vs Dupuy in the over 50 age group and they will probably still be crushing dunks on 10! Lol
      The competition aspect is huge for making gains in performance. That was one of the big lessons for me on dunking this year. I knew I had zero chance of winning the Dunk contest but man it provided that extra motivation I needed to finally breakthrough that plateau of 1 hand basic dunks that had stifled me for years. Without the pressure of the contest, i don't think I would of had the discipline i needed to get the progress that I did. Gave me enough motivation to clean up my diet, stretch, etc -- the things that make that little bit of difference that gets you to your next level. I'm sure it's the same with races / triathlons / etc

    • @adarqui
      @adarqui Před 7 lety +2

      Yup. Competition is an underrated "training tool". With more adrenaline, neural drive, focus, etc, it can be a great way to try and achieve new PR's etc. I only did one dunk contest (a nba sprite dunk contest); knowing I was going to do it definitely helped keep me on track. I got that "competition effect" tho from other settings because i'd often go to new courts where no one knew me (and I always went alone) and i'd dunk in between games, during a game (when they went to the other side), or on a court by myself etc. That stuff actually got me pretty amp'd up. Unfamiliar settings can be nearly as good, if not as good, as entering an actual competition. Also ya, training for race competitions is basically the same.. though, dunk/jump training is WAAAAAY more fun than run training. It really helps to have some external motivators for running. Running is some serious monotony.; i'm a master of monotony though, so I find it fun. lol.
      peace man!!!

    I know I'm late to the party on this. Just watched this for the first time. Like everyone else, I'm motivated. Thanks for sharing your journey with the world through CZcams.
    I've been able to dunk since middle school. It was one of my most favorite things in the world to do.
    Back in the late 80s and early 90s, I participated in dunk contests all the time. Won a lot of them too.
    I got injured in my 30s and my leaping ability was never the same. I could still dunk but it wasn't like before. I got older and eventually stopped playing altogether. Back in my day, "real ball players" made fun of you if they saw you in the gym working on dunks. There were plenty of times I got undercut for dunking over someone. Rode in the back of an ambulance plenty of times because someone got embarrassed and retaliated.
    ...but I still would like in bed at night making up new dunks in my sleep.
    I'm 52 now. The last time I was in a gym with a ball in my hands was last summer. I actually got a put-back dunk just playing around. I'm 6-4 but I'm 65 pounds heavier than when I was playing on a regular basis.
    This documentary made me want to get back out there and enter one more competition. Like you, I have no delusions of winning. I just want to hear them announce my name one more time and hand me the ball.
    I came along way before cellphones with cameras and I only have one video online. I didn't record it and I dont know the person who posted it. Search YT for James Nintendo Wilson mix and you should find a clip that's about a minute and half long. Turn your speakers off. I'm not a fan of the music. But you'll see the only video I have. It's not my best stuff. It's from the hoop it up national slam dunk contest in Dallas of 93 or 94. (I went a few years in a row.) I'm way before And1 or even the internet.
    Anyway, I know this was a very long post. Just wanted to say thanks for the motivation. You're an impressive person and you've got my respect.

      Manny Donaire thanks for the very kind words. There's a snippet of the armpit in the rim dunk in there as well. Keep in mind, that was 25 years ago. Vince Carter did the elbow in the rim dunk in the NBA dunk contest in 2000. Honestly, it wasn't even my dunk. I got it from Barry Hardy. He was a great leaper as well. He and I went head to head in philly in 92 or 93. That was the most competitive event that I ever participated in. He did some of his best stuff and I did mine. We eventually agreed to swap best moves. From then on, he was doing my dunks at competitions and shows and I was doing his. Another great leaper from back in the day was Joey Johnson (the late Dennis Johnson's younger brother).He had the most explosive hops I've ever seen in person. Back in those days, all of us could easily get our heads above the rim to look down into it. But as far as I'm concerned, this accomplishment by Andy outshines us all. I sincerely mean that. To have gone that long trying to dunk and not being able to and then finally achieve the ability in your mind 40s is mind blowing! That's like being slow all your life and then running a 10 second 100 meter dash in your 30s or 40s. Lots of people can do it when they're young but to do it for your first time when you're older is AWESOME!
      I want to get back out there after having watched this video even though every joint in my body is screaming "no! Don't do it!"
      If I ever enter a slam dunk contest again, it will mostly be because Andy motivated me to get off my butt and get out there to do it again. This time around, I'll have to work at it. I've never trained before so, I don't even know what that's like.
      This is truly AMAZING. Thanks again Andy!!

    • @brockman562
      @brockman562 Před 5 lety

      you probably have to ease your way into it...and start by shedding the 65 lbs, eating well, cardio, and going to gym. getting ready for the dunk contest will probably be the best thing for you you cuz you'll be more healthy with the change in your non-active lifestyle and eating healthy imo. good luck and document the process. and since you're way older than Andy, you might not wanna go overboard on the workouts, and you'll probably need more day's rest here and there from your workout regime. older people are susceptible to injuries.
      you should look up hook mitchell (oakland native). he's and old cat that had hops even in his 40s. jumped over the hood of a car (w/o ball, and when he was younger haha).
      good luck
