- Cherry Step Stool || Traditional Wood Joinery ...In this video I show you how I took some warped, cracked, twisted and pith-y cherry that was destined for the fireplace, and turned it into a step stool with traditional wood joinery. A twist of walnut was added to complement the richness of the cherry. The use of traditional joinery, like mortise and tenon and wedged mortise and tenon, make this piece completely bomb proof and it will no doubt outlive me. And of course, there were mistakes made along the way, but where's the fun in doing everything right the first time? LOL. I hope you enjoy watching the process of how I built this step stool with traditional wood joinery as much I did building it. #stepstool #woodworking #furniture #kjsawdust

nicely done man - at least I'm not the only one who uses my table saw as a finishing station
Nick Ferry Thanks Nick! Oh yeah, the table saw is a multi-function workstation for sure.
Nick Ferry the only flat surface in the shop scratch that inthe house lol

That was awesome man, you need more subscribers so I'm becoming one.
Awesome! Thanks for jumping on board !
Nice bro.
Thanks!!
Loved the video, especially the commentary. The Neil Diamond quote was icing on the cake! Just listened to that song yesterday!
Yes! You're the first person to pick up on it!! 👍🙌😎
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking When I wrote my book, most of the subheadings in one of the chapters were song titles or lines. No one has picked up on it yet!
@@james_freeman That's a good way to weed out the people you'd want to hang out with. LOL.

jamesfreemanstudio 🤷🏼♂️😂🤣
Nice work Keith
John Gaffney Thanks a lot, John!
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking I'm planning to do a stool myself, but your level of expertise and complexity is way beyond anything I can contemplate. Also, a nice touch of humour in the video!
@@johngaffney1671 Much appreciated man! And you should definitely give that stool a go! You might just surprise yourself.
Wow🙄👏👏👏👏
Thank you!!
Wow
Thanks a lot, Brian! 👊
Sell all your tools and have enough to buy a new house. Ha! I have the same problem. Loved the grain pattern on top.
Brumble Buffin Thanks man!! But the tools will never be sold! 😜
Nice job, I liked the arched stretcher. I think you should re-make it. lol
😂 Why I oughta....😜😆
Great build and awesome job on the video. New sub right here.
Thanks for watching and the sub!! I really appreciate that!
Was listening to Shop Sounds today and you referenced this video (Episode 23). Wasn't sure what you meant by relief holes for the wedge slots (7:20) but NOW I see what you mean. It makes perfect sense. I think Chris - Third Coast Craftsman - used this technique (step) as well. Thanks for the video, super instructional! That bench looks awesome as well. Take care and have a good one :D
You bet! Thanks for the comment. I think this was the last time I actually did a wedged mortise and tenon...😂
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Wow! I would think it is used more often, but I do not know enough. Enjoying the podcast, gonna continue watching your YT videos as well. Take care and stay safe!
@@woodworksbygrampies1284 Thanks so much!!
Wow, so glad I found this video. I've been thinking about how to construct my next project (wooden stool). How you fastened the legs with angled tenons was just what I was imagining. Didn't know if it could actually be done, but now I have seen that it indeed can be. Beautiful work. Loved watching your work flow; interesting tools were used also. What was that flat red metal piece with the angle markings on it? That's by Wood Pecker, correct? Last compliment, I promise; great music and really enjoyed the word pop-ups throughout. Your wife came in and distracted you? Say it isn't so. Mine always wants me to stop and watch her latest find on the laptop screen which she brings into the shop. All-in-all, thoroughly enjoyable. I will watch several times to make sure I absorbed everything. Thanks for posting. Take care.
Thanks so much for your comment and the kind words. Glad to hear the video was helpful! And yes, the angle plate is a Woodpeckers item, but others make them as well.
Really nice work! Next a wooden tripod!! ;)
That would be handy for sure!!
That was great, love your project! You don't need to make sarcastic or snipey comments about yourself. It is more fun to watch a confident professional, as you should be, making things this good!
That's my personality!
A Hollow chisel would be reallly useful
Absolutely!
Math! (and more forearm cam please :)
tim sway I'm on it!!
Keith, it’s 2023. Where’s the hollow chisel mortiser? 😉
That tool is a one-trick pony, man. And this video is 6 years old. The Domino rules the roost now.
Great video! Awesome build. You have some awesome tools. How do you like the woodpecker drill press table. Been looking ar getting one
Thanks Nate! I love the Woodpecker table (as with all Woodpecker stuff), but have 2 small issues:
1. I wish it was a little deeper. The fence adjustment will only go so far back before it falls out of the t-track so you are limited on how far you can drill from the edge without removing the fence.
2. It would be nice if the fence was a little taller. I do have the tall fence they make as well which is more like a table saw fence which is good for drilling pieces on edge, but it's so tall that my drill press handle tends to bump into it.
Overall, it's extremely well-built and great for repeatable setups with the flip stops.
I think they are running a big sale on them right now, so might be a good time to take the plunge!
I'm subscriber #40 :-)
Hazem Bata Thanks for subscribing and checking out the vid!! Got a new one in the works that should be up soon.
Looking forward to it. BTW, I like the light-hearted and humorous commentary in the videos.
Thanks Hazem! I really appreciate that!
Keith, excellent work!! I really enjoy watching your vlogs and seeing your work. Where do you get your lumber from? I'm across the sound from you on LI and haven't found anyplaces here that carries raw material. Any suggestions of places near by? Thank you
HTP Services Thanks man! Believe it or not i find all my lumber on Craigslist. It’s out there you just have to keep searching on a regular basis.
Noice.....Great set up of modern and trad tools.
But what was that cool mechanical pencil you were using?
Thanks!! No idea on the pencil...bought it on Amazon a long time ago and i don't remember the brand - sorry!!
i took a look at your long sleeve shirt, but noticed the cuffs are not banded. For me the sleeves would dangle and make it unsafe at the table saw. But, gorgeous bench.
Sorry about that! I don't have much choice in which cuffs I can get. I appreciate you looking, though. And thanks for the kind words on the bench!
Hey Keith - what is the thick your bench stool top. Thinking about making one myself, just a bit longer. Really like your work and CZcams videos.
1-inch thick for legs and top. And thanks!
love the stool! Might try one myself soon. What kind of gloves are those at 4:29?
Thanks Mark! Those are Firm Grip gloves and can be found at Home Depot. 👍
verry god work and good music to , what is the music you are playing ?
All the info is in the description 👍🏻
''Can you help me?'' 'Oh yeah ofc' But his face says me: 'Com'on I'm working here!'
LOL. Exactly!!
Not much to add to all the positive comments on the step stool BUT! I'd like to know more about your tablesaw fence. I want to build/convert my old Delta/Jet round tube fence to a Besmyer t-square type fence. What say you young man?
I say I no longer have that table saw. 😂. It was just a plywood H over the factory fence.
excellent work...BTW what is the gauge you use for transferring exact angles. Looks like Aluminum approx 2.5 inches X 12inches or so. Etched angles any degree. Looks like it came from woodpeckers but am not sure what to call it or where to get it. Thanks and keep up the great work. Learning a lot. JimP
Hey Jim! Thanks for the comment. That is a bevel gauge and angle reference plate. It was a Woodpeckers one time tool and, unfortunately, is no longer made. However, there are others on the market - for example, Veritas Tools sells one called the Bevel Setter that functions the same.
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking : Hi Keith. Thank you for the lead on where to find similar. I will find that very handy. Keep up the excellent video’s.
Your results are outstanding and I can tell you it’s not as easy as you make it seem.
No problem, Jim! And thanks so much for the encouraging words and for following along. More videos on the way. 👍🏻👊🏻
Everything is great, but I don't understand the reason for the two supports between the top and the bent stretcher. Please explain.
Thanks a lot.
I like the aesthetic 👍🏻
Hi! I really like your work, very well done, excellent! could you tell me the model of your bench saw? I'm looking to buy one!
Which one? Table saw or miter saw?
I'm talking about the table saw, I watched you cut a thick board with a table saw, I found it very powerful, so I asked you to tell me or the model of it!

@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking thank you very much!
9:41 I do not fold laundry: Everything goes straight from the dryer to the drawer -- lay it out flat is good enough.
Just like on Little House on the Prairie!
Minchia! Do you have a very special tools.
Thank you!!
Left a like for this nice video. Designwise, I could have lived without the two little stiffeners and just one cross bar :) As I sidenot to the video, maybe you like to consider showing the essential part of the work steps in normal speed with the actual sound the handtools make, rather than fastforwarding the whole process. But a very lovely little bench.
Volker Petersen Thanks for the input! I’ll see what i can do!
you look like chester bennington of linkin park haha!

Sorry Keith, can't spell. Asking thickness on stool bench top. Also, is cherry a heavy wood?
Top and legs are 1" thick. Cherry is a hardwood, but slightly softer than walnut. It's not as heavy as Ash, but it's minimal when speaking of something this small.
do you sell plans for this bench
Sorry, no plans. I just designed it as I built it.
