The iRacing Community Owes Me an Apology

  • I bought iRacing as a teen because like many others I believed it to be the future of sim racing. Within about a year. it was very obvious that it was no better or worse than other racing sims on the market, and I started asking pretty basic questions about both what we paid for & the curiously "intense" fanbase surrounding it.
    This resulted in large chunks of the sim racing community - including iRacing themselves - smearing me as a crazed hater out to destroy the company, and constantly having to deal with a "welcoming community" that was suspiciously hostile the moment someone recognized my name. I don't have fond memories of sim racing over the past decade, but rather this weird saga of nerds chasing after me while attempting to be a content creator and engage with the community.
    Close to a decade later, I've been vindicated for my opinions on several major fronts, and statements or observations I made that people overreacted to, are now quite common. There has been no acknowledgement that maybe I was onto something.
    There probably should be.

    nobody would defend iracing so hard if it was another regular game on steam like any other sim. what gives people the illusion that iracing is any better is the amount of money they have to spend regularly to play it, nothing less, nothing more.

    iRacing's physics has gone through periods of just being flat-out bad, barely even drivable, yet all the time the company and its fanboys continued to insist it was head and shoulders better than anything else on the market. Why would I ever believe them that this time it's finally good?

    • @AustinOgonoski
      @AustinOgonoski  Před 2 lety +39

      What's frustrating is that it could have come full circle within a matter of... weeks, really.
      The email from iRacing was originally sent to RD site owner Bram Henegeveld, hence why I'm referred to in third person. Hindsight is 20/20, but Bram probably should have put them on blast as a feature article and been like "what the fuck is this bullshit?" Would have been over and done with in a couple days and iRacing would have learned not to pull that shit again from the brief PR nightmare. Instead we basically sat on it and allowed iRacing to continue bullying content creators (and pro drivers) for the better part of a decade. It's not my story to tell but they went after the late Will Marsh as well for even pettier reasons, but Will wasn't one for conflict so he opted to keep it quiet.
      We were also contacted, quite early after my review went live, by a guy named Xavier Maassen. This guy drove the Mad Croc Corvette GT1 car and basically said "fantastic review, that Austin guy nailed what's wrong with the tires, I can't fucking drive the new McLaren they released." In hindsight, we should have done a follow up piece interviewing him about the differences between iRacing ad real life. We just weren't sharp enough to think of that. So all of Josef Newgarden's comments from 2020 that were considered to be so eye-opening and gave iRacing a major kick in the ass, we could have published as far back as 2013 as a feature article on RD from an FIA GT1 driver.

    That was my #1 complaint, can't catch a slide basically, no sliding aloud or almost none. Luckily I settled in on Assetto Corsa after trying all the Sims and only spending about $75 on iracing. I have a friend that spent close to $1k on all iracing content since in his opinion its the best and I might have done the same if I thought it was. I could not care less if an iracing fan doesn't think Assetto is the best but if I spent $1k on it, I might be offended. It's great that we have such high quality sims to choose from.

      I felt the same way about slides and such but after I got my Accuforce V2 it was a completely different experience. I just put that down to sim commander being a great piece of software though. Catching slides is trivial now and usually I can avoid them all together now. I do think it’s a little ridiculous that it takes having a wheel of that caliber to be able to feel the car when other sims can do it with the most basic entry level wheels. if they would quit attacking constructive criticism and focus that energy on improving the sim and getting rid of clowns that constantly wreck everyone then it could be a much better service.

    I haven't been into sim racing for long, 2 years roughly. I started with AC, RF2, and ACC, and after enjoying it so much I finally went to iracing. It took me a while because the cost of iracing was a turn off for me. As soon as I started playing I was enjoying racing other people around my skill level (most of the time) but the cars didn't feel great and I started to hear pro drivers like Niki Thiim call out what I was feeling, and I found your channel, then other pros started calling out the game. I still find it so odd that instead of trying to work with WEC world champions, Indy car champions and so many other pros on making your game better, they try to silence them and do nothing... I want the sim to get better but when you don't listen to feedback, and when people are afraid to give the feedback how is that going to happen. Anyway, I'm glad things have come full circle.

  • @judysummit
    @judysummit Před 2 lety +3

    Wow I'm 4 m in and you were right, the main problem the game has is the slip angle curve like the Indy driver said. They made changes from car to car very recently that suggest that they finally took your gripes to heart and implemented the change. Although one can easily point to tire model changes in ACC as a motivation for that change as well aside from ARCA drivers contributing directly to their own tire model in game. The irony is that you are one of the games biggest fans for wanted them to fix a crucial part of the game. I think having a physical model tire is a challenge for them but with Mercedes coming in to develop their cars they should really try to access their intellectual property in that exchange, I bet Mercedes' proprietary tire sim has way more money going into it than iRacing can dream of, even though Lewis doesn't use it

    Iracing is a joke at this point. 15 years later their tire model is garbage. Their braking model is garbage. The sound design is garbage. Their graphics are garbage. Their optimizations are garbage. The one and only thing they have are the number of active players at a given time.
    The amount of money they charge and if we’re honest how bad the game really is on every level, there are no excuses and they deserve every piece of honest reviews they get. Inferior products at tomorrow’s prices.

    I agree with all of this, iRacing has many flaws and the community around it is beyond toxic. I remember a year or two ago I asked a question about NTG 2011 on the NASCAR games Reddit and every single response ignored my question and instead said “lol that game sucks iracing is better” “you need to get iRacing that game isn’t good”. I’ve been in multiple races where I’ve been wrecked, intentionally or not, and I’ve been yelled at for it. It’s not at all fun. The people who make this game are very much so a huge part of the problem but I don’t care how good or bad iRacing is, I will never play it because of the player base.

Most people aren’t smart enough to see the platform is designed to control & trap its user base. Unfortunately for most they lack the ability to differentiate themselves from the platform, they take on its identity because they never had their own to begin with. They feel like they’re apart of something because they were never apart of something to begin with. They’re simply trying to CONNECT because they were disconnected. It’s actually incredibly 😢

    For a long time I've realized that the main problem with iRacing community is the sunk cost fallacy. Due to the hundreds or even thousands of dollars spent in the game, long time players are pressured to justify their investment, going against anyone who doesn't support the game. This is why subscription-based games are a social nightmare and unfortunately its becoming the norm. NR2003 all the way.

    The sim has recently worked with a lot of IndyCar drivers to iron out the tire model after many complaints. I know Tony Kannan did a ton of work with them to help. And he even said it's a lot closer to realistic than it was when they did the pro invitational series. iRacing has invested a lot more into making things feel better with cars now, especially with the fact that they're no longer barely breaking even. They're slowly but surely making each car better and each tire model better as well. It still has lots of glaring issues, but as someone who's raced a super late model irl, it the work they have done to improve it recently makes it feel a lot better. Still not super realistic, but certainly a fuck ton better

    -IRacing is mostly great, but they need more servers to fix the latency issues. And the tire model needs severe fixing. Connection issues weren’t as terrible until the service got a higher population.
    -Also, road cars don’t spin like that anymore. If you’re spinning like that, you are over driving it or using the wrong settings for your wheel and pedal configuration.
    -I think IRacing is by far the best sim racer on the market, but it can be quite frustrating at times. I’m still pissed with how they fucked up the Street Stocks. The damage model is fine now, but they are way too “floaty” and about two tenths off the pace from a year ago.
    -They are way too draconian with their penalty system. (The protest system). I’ve been suspended for pretty stupid things and I’m in the situation where any small infraction will get me suspended again. I have to lay over for people now for fear of accidentally wrecking someone and getting protested for “intentional wrecking” with it getting upheld.
    -IRacing isn’t a “NASCAR game”, which many people fail to recognize.
    -it is is expensive, but in all honesty, you’re spending less on IRacing than you do on gas money in real life.
    -I’ve heard many pro series drivers complaining about the setups and racing package. It doesn’t help that NASCAR’s 550 HP package exists either.
    -Most people I’ve encountered on the sim are nice and respectable, but in the NIS series, people take that shit way too seriously. Malik Ray told me to delete my account and “never race again,” now he has no VC. Shit doesn’t offend me, but every NIS race I enter, I get massively targeted.
    -Jason Jacoby is in jail. I made a video about him about five months ago and got a confirmation comment that he had been arrested. I raced the guy once and wanted to wreck him so bad since he was right in front of me all race.

      I hope its not the majority, but yes, in my 7000 races (Road) with 1100 [Road] wins, and even in my 1000 Oval races, I had a blast, racing all day, all night, between 2011-2018. I was there to race offical races, not to make friends, and not to do test evaluations of tyre models, and not to focus on a weekly League race or two, which I still did a little of anway.
      I Won two Indy500s...in my splt but a split is a split...I drunk milk afterwards so believe me, I won that race. Twice. LOL. I got what I wanted out of the relationship, while not caring too much about the fact that the racecraft and sportsmanship of so many members was just plain non-existant.
      The community is a few guys contributing, a bunch like me trying to haha. Sadly also there exist in some clubs, but interestingly NOT in Club Australia, of which I was 10- times Club Champion, consecutively, a bunch adding no value due to being so slow, or dangerous, or League-fixated , or physics-obsessed. I did 51 GT3 races in Watkins Glen week, each race was 45minutes, which is 15mins short of what I wanted, but understandable because people have lives and also they're soft and unfit simple as that really. So yes, Im quite mad, but I am not a prick, and I took my sportsmanship very fucking seriously and no one ever had reason to pissed after I raced them. I was taken out alot but you learn only a quarter or less can race closely because they are not racers or even racefans, but gamers. I may be crazy, but at least the crazies left me alone, perhaps suspecting I would out-crazy their crazy if they got their crazy too close to my crazy bro. 😛🚩🙃🏁🇦🇺😁
      I raced Will Power many times in some weeks, and he complimented me once, apologised once after 40mins of awesome preasure saw him drop it at the top of Eau Rouge with me unable to avoid his spin and taking us both out. I got my monies worth, yes the physics sucked at times, but it sucked for all of us, and that didnt stop me ane my G27 on a desk with a simgle screen winning 1100 times. I think that iRacing could become less of a "simcade" game and more into a simulator if they prioritized fixing the massive issues that have been plaguing iRacing for a while. Let's face it, nobody except for a few road racing nuts care if a new GT4 car or some track in a foreign country gets announced. The only way fundamental issues even get looked at is when it happens in a pro series race or there's enough bitching about it on the forums to warrant attention. A prime example of this is the brake dragging fiasco that was prevalent in the top tier of road racing and the recent grass dipping scandal that happened in the top split 24h race. It got to the point where I was receiving fake emails claiming that I got banned on iRacing for bad forum behavior. The iRacing community is not a very welcome one outside of some leagues. It ends up being very elitist with anyone who doesn't have a high iRating relegated to being trash.
    The community is fucked, the game is fucked, and iRacing's priorities are fucked. I know iRacing can be a really great game at times, but the few memorable moments get outweighed by the massive amounts of irritation and frustration caused by iRacing's neglect of core problems.
