    I notice the same Mike . I especially notice this in the winter when I keep my house cooler. The temperature tends to drop to between 71 and 75. The ratio is about 30% male to 70% female. Great Channel

    I have a heated fishroom here in the Netherlands when its summer i have more male guppy's and endlers. Like now in the winter i have a lot of females. Until March or something like that than i have the turningpoint going back to more males. Noticed this a few year ago (breeding livebearers for almost 10 years)
    Have a great day 🙏

    The first drop of my newest strain was 100% female (29 survived of the 30-35+ of them born a few days after their parents arrived to my fish room in the mail). With the subsequent drops that I can confidently tell male vs female from (Dec and Jan; Feb's is too small to me still), they're closer to 40/60 (still favoring females; born and raised in water that's been between 76-78ºF.) I do think temperature has some type of influence on it.

    I think I have experienced the same results that you’re talking about as far as warmer temperatures more males in live bearers. I very rarely run my tanks up to 80 but when I try to raise fry faster, more water changes warmer temperatures, it does speed up their metabolism they do grow faster, but they’re shortens their life so I keep mine around 75 to 76°. I have more problems with lower pH in my area so I have to add crush coral now to my live bearers tanks where I didn’t used to have to do that. Love seeing you Michael.

    @billsnanos Před 6 měsíci

    Mike i have to agree with your analogy. i experienced that ratio when i was breeding bettas to get more males i increased my temp. more females lower the temp, I am doing livebearers now and seeing how it works as I am trying to build up my breeding colony so at this point i want a few more females than males as we all know what is on the mind of male guppies lol.

    Hi Michael, I love your channel and got me into breeding high end swordtails and guppies. Im glad you made a video about this. I do find that harder water and hotter temperatures gives more males. I’ve been keeping my fish a little lower end due this reason. I rather have more females. Maybe the hotter temperature makes sperm that are males move faster?

    • @IvansGuppies
      @IvansGuppies Před 6 měsíci +1

      Guppies have a base body color that is either greyish or yellow ish. The yellow is usually called either blonde based or golden based (depends if you are in the US or not). The grey base is a dominant trait so if a tank is full of grey guppies that have both copies of the gene, they will throw a percentage of blonde based guppies pretty regularly.

    There isn't much research to be found on that topic. What few papers that are published generally point to it being genetic, however nothing published is conclusive.
    I personally beleave it to be genetic from my years of breeding, research, and testing.
    However like you said, there is no proof either way and its still a crap shoot as to what if anything has an effect on the sex of the fry.

  • @edmorris1437
    @edmorris1437 Před 6 měsíci

    Your observations are valid. I do have a biological science background, but not specifically guppy genetics. There are species (e.g., turtles) where incubation temperature directly affects offspring sex. However, it is pretty well established that guppy sex is determined by X & Y chromosomes*, just like in humans. One would expect a 1:1 ratio, but skewed sex ratios like you’ve observed have been replicated jn controlled experiments. There doesn’t appear to be consensus why, just some theories. Could it be that sperm competition or fertilization is affected by temperature? Could temperature affect embryo development within the female, and male embryos are more likely to be aborted at lower temperatures? Could it be that new fry mortality is higher in males at lower temperature? Could it be a combination of these factors? Could this phenomenon vary between different guppy strains? There are a bunch of unknowns.
    *Not all livebearers are the same. X. maculatus Platies are odd, for example. They have W,X,&Y sex chromosomes. I don’t know about Variatus Platies, or the various Mollies, Swordtails, etc.

    Hi Mike, I have an unrelated to this video question. I have to move unexpectedly. My property management company changed their pet policy. Plus my 80 year old Mom needs help. I'll be moving from Tennessee to Alabama. It will be a 7 hour drive. I have fish I want to keep. I'm thinking of renting a small uhaul trailer and loading it with the three 100 gallon stock tubs I have. I can fill them 30 % full, load them with the fish I want to keep, use the battery operated air pumps to supply air to some air stones, and drive them to AL. Does this sound reasonable? Or stupid? I've never moved fish this far before. I will keep fish mouth size in mind when I decide what fish goes in what tub.
    I'm glad you are feeling better!

    • @MichaelsFishRoom
      @MichaelsFishRoom  Před 6 měsíci

      Thanks! Sorry about your need to move. Do you have that many fish to move that you need 3 100 stock tanks? If possible I would use buckets, but your plan will work I think.

    • @vampgaia
      @vampgaia Před 6 měsíci

      @@MichaelsFishRoom I had planned to move at the end of the summer. I'll be living with my Mom who doesn't want fish tanks in the house. My fish will be in tubs outside. I'll be in the Deep South of Alabama so the weather should be hot enough by the end of April (my get out date) for the fish to survive outside.

    • @user-sv8tt4en2v
      @user-sv8tt4en2v Před 6 měsíci

      Hi, you're plan should work fine. I'd connect the airline to seeded sponge filters, you get air and filtration. Plus don't feed your fish a day or two before the move. Finally watch as many vids from ofr behind the scenes, Reaper mainly does fish rescues often over long distances. All the best and safe travels.
