  • My aspiration is that my Paddy’s Golf Tips can help every golfer achieve a single figure handicap. I have just released an introductory video in which I detail a plan to help you achieve this as a series of Paddy’s Golf Tips covering different areas of the game, which will be released over the next few months.

    I had a great teacher years ago(Brett Saunders) he spent a lot of time on our lessons teaching me to feel confident hitting a 7 iron to 150 yards, when I questioned him why we spend lesson after lesson on the 150 shot, he explained, when I missed the fairway with my drive, I could chip sideways to 150 and still feel confident that I could hit the green and 2 putt for bogey. He stressed that double bogeys were a bad shot followed by a stupid shot, which 30 years later I still try to execute.

    Paddy! I do HOPE that you will sometime read this. I grew up playing golf, at one time a 7 handicap in my younger life. I had to really give up golf to practice medicine for 40 years.I am retiring from my medical practice in 6 months, at the age of 74. I am very focused on returning to my golf game and this NEW "PROGRAM" of yours is such a GIFT to me. I will "follow this to a tee"(forgive the pun). I look forward to playing golf again at a great "senior level'. With your wonderful help, I know I will! Again much thanks!!

      Me too (except for being Irish). Hail Paddy! I will obey. I managed to get to below 18 relatively quick not having to take lessons (after the first 8 to learn the basics), just applying bogey handicap course management and riding a little on 20 years of field hockey skills. After that it feels like I am stuck in the same gear. Not a bad place to be and enjoy golf, but ever since I played a round of 12 above par in 2022, I wanted to know what it takes to sustain rounds like that. My first club fitting last year opened my eyes on my swing faults, since then I learned how to compress my irons. Totally ready for the next step.

    I am amazed that a world-class golfer I've never met is prepared to teach me his skills. I know that the internet facilitates this but doesn't make it easy for Mr Harrington - it still needs a lot of effort and thought, and the giving of his time to us all. I am so looking forward to this series. Thank you Mr H.

    @KeithWhittingham Před měsícem +1

    This is a good approach. Most golf pros seem to teach lesson to lesson where they try and make some minor change to make you feel good each time. That will string out over years with no real improvement and a lot of frustration as you keep going back to fix things that weren't really fixed last time. You have no idea where you are, what the end goals are, ...
    A better approach is to have a whole road map which the average person can follow for a couple of years and someone with natural talent will complete in a year.
    Full swing, short game swing, and putting need to be tackled in parallel. They are three different skills which turns out to be to your advantage - when you get tired of practicing full swings then move onto pitching, ...and then putting.
    Then there are the cross skill disciplines: flexibility, body awareness, strength, mental control, learning how to learn, ...
    I could go on!

  • @TeddyCavachon
    @TeddyCavachon Před měsícem +1

    My swing and scores didn’t improve until I retired, went to work at a golf course and was able to play practice rounds on the course without worrying about my stroke score or handicap. Instead I focused on having a plan and target for every single shot, including of the tee and evaluating success and progress based on whether or not I executed the shot as planned. If not and playing alone on an empty course I’d just drop another ball and try again correcting whatever problem that caused the previous to not work.
    More often than not the source of the problem was that on the course the ball wasn’t on a perfectly flat artificial turf range mat lie, it was on un-level real turf where taking a divot was required. That’s the case for most recreational golfer. Even on the range they don’t get the opportunity to always hit off turf the way the pros practice. Once I started playing non-scoring practice rounds I realized that practicing on the mats at the range was causing more harm than good. Instead I started just playing the first few holes tee-to-green with just my seven iron until I felt loose and warmed up. What I discovered doing that is I was actually scoring better than hitting Driver / wedge 😂.
    I played nearly daily for two years in ‘match play’ mode against the designer of the course, counting pars as a ‘draw’ and birdie or better as a ‘win’ in a war of 18 separate battles of wits. Progress was measured by just counting the pars a one point, birdies as two and eagles as three and with that mindset I started getting birdies and my first eagle. I also lost far more holes than I won but it never ruined the entire round and crushed my spirit like stroke play does when you are under-par mid-round then hit one errant shot that snowballs into a snowman or worse.
    In my view the USGA handicap system is counter-productive to improving one’s golf swing because to be fair FOR COMPETITION it requires following all the rules and counting every shot and it is impossible to practice on the course that way and the the only way anyone can practice on a course is to be a pro or an employee at won. Until a golf wants to compete there is no reason to have a handicap because there are better ways to measure progress like tracking fairways hit, greens in regulation, putting % from various distances to track what part of the game need the most improvement.

    I'm really looking forward to this, I've been stuck around 12 for a year now. I have distance(34° 7 iron Carrys 170/ 175) my approach game was the best part of my game, now its my worst. I have been having lessons to work on the mechanics and playing/ practicing 3/4 times a week. I believe my decision making is good. The part that let's me down is a bad hit for me could be a shank OB or a thin over the green to an awkward up and down. And tee shots....driver stays in the bag when a good or perfect shot is required. I could hit a great drive...but only 1/4 of the time. And mentally I'm good. The frustration comes from knowing I could be around a 5 hcp. I'm not expecting perfection every time but a shank out of nowhere or a topped driver will randomly jump Into the rounds. The thing I struggle with most is how much wind will effect shots.

    • @BuckMulligan72
      @BuckMulligan72 Před měsícem +2

      I have a very similar game to you, and in all honestly, I gotta say the one or two oddball shots per round, the shank, top, thin, banana slice OB, etc. is not really ever going to leave your game unless you're willing to put in an insane amount of time to practice the full swing. You quickly hit diminishing returns on your time practicing the full swing somewhere around a 10 handicap (different for everyone, but somewhere around 10), where the amount of time you need to put in starts to go up exponentially but the return you get from that practice is only like one or two strokes per round. My suggestion (if it's worth anything at my level, an 11 handicap, used to be around 7 when I played more) is that if you've never done a very thorough audit of your short game, you stand to gain the most by getting better there.
      Dave Pelz's "Short Game Bible" is the best resource, in my opinion. Working back from the pin, be bulletproof from inside 3 feet putting, practice putting from 10 feet and in (Pelz's "golden 8"), then use the lion's share of your time dialing in your wedges. Forget 150 yards and in, more like 80 and in, some distance where you have a snowball's chance of hitting to a makable putting distance, at least an easy two-putt. Long game is WAY overrated for the amateur. It's everything at the professional level because they need every last marginal advantage they can get to compete with the best in the world. Time spent practicing short game, any wedge game, chipping, pitching, distance wedges, is never wasted, and that feel carries over into the longer clubs. That's my two cents as a nobody. Just sharing my experience.
