Minimalist Packing - One Bag Travel - How I Travel with only a 15 Liter Bag!

  • I'm traveling most of the time, most trips are one to two months and I only carry one backpack. Depending on the gear I need, I'll usually bring a 13 to 18 liter backpack, even in cold weather.
    My secret to packing light is Marino Wool clothing, Icebreaker is my favorite brand. I'm able to bring minimal clothing which doesn't smell even after wearing for a few days, washes easily in the sink and hang drys quickly. Layering in cold weather keeps me warm, even in freezing weather I don't need bulky clothes or jackets.
    This trip I'm using the Pacsafe Venturesafe G3 15 liter backpack. It's perfect for Mexico buses, I'm able to lock the bag and use the restroom without worrying about anyone taking or going through my bag while I'm gone. Also in the metro being able to lock the bag is great, I don't have to worry about someone unzipping and taking anything while I'm not looking.

    Impressive! I own this bag and I have used it for years as my every day carry. It is a much older model. It was purchased as a personal bag for a plane trip for my son. I will have to try this some afternoon to see how many clothes I can get in. I don’t own quite as many merino wool items though. Socks and winter base layers. Thanks for this! Good job!

    The eBags packing cubes are size SMALL for those asking.
    My favorite merino clothing I travel with is:
    Unbound Merino (2 black V-neck T-shirts)- 100% merino. Black color, so you cannot see me sweating in the heat.
    Wool&Prince (1 Button Down Shirt)- 100% merino
    Smartwool (1 Long sleeve crew)- 100% merino
    Darn Tough Socks (3 pairs)- merino blend
    As for underwear, ExOfficio Men's GiveNGo 2.0 Boxer Brief is the most comfortable underwear I have ever had, merino underwear wears out very quickly for me.
    Thank you Todd for the great video! Love the info.

      @ToddHata  Před rokem +2

      Cool, you could go smaller, I even have some things on this 3 month trip around the world, 2 months of it in southeast asia, that I don't need. I did pick up some new shirts though, very thin ones since it is so hot.
      I don't need a jacket, 1 pair of pants and 2 shorts, swim trunks, a couple t shirts, shorts to sleep in, I have 5 short sleeve button down shirts, 2 pairs of socks, 2 boxers. Too many cables, need to cut back on that, otherwise I think I'm as minimal as I can go.
      Have fun!

    Impressive. I still use a 45L carry-on when travelling because I always bring back items for friends and family. but I have been able to get all of my clothes down to 2 eBags packing cubes (1 medium, 1 small). I use a slim cube for flip flops to keep from getting items dirty. I recently purchased a 3L stuff sack that my bubble jacket fits perfect into. Plus being a woman I travel with curling irons and more toiletries. I've been able to pack down to 33L.

      Todd Hata I never pack a pair of shoes. I only bring the ones I’m wearing. It’s a real art to packing minimally. My backpack is cheap it needs to be replaced. This make and model is very interesting to me. I’ve heard some folks say that the shoulder straps can’t be adjusted so the bag can fit snugly on your back, but the G3 model seems to have straps adjusted at the bottom like a typical backpack. Have you found that to be an issue and getting the straps adjusted to your body? Also, was it very comfortable caring it for a few hours on your back? I have a major trip coming up soon and I will need to have a backpack on me for a long time during the day. Thanks for such a great video!

    A dual sim phone would save carrying 2 phones

      Now I have the Pixel 5 with Google Fi on the esim and my Telcel mexico sim card in the slot. But I still carry a backup phone since several times I've had a phone die on me while traveling internationally and had to buy cheap junk phones as a quick replacement.

      Toothpaste, that's about it! I use what's at the hotels for the rest

    I don't know where you got that 15L from but the size reported on the website is 44 x 24.5 x 18 cm = ~20L. Some European websites even report 25L as the max volume when fully packed. When I watched this video the first time I was like "how the hell did he do it??" then figured out...He didn't :P Great packing skills nevertheless!

    Toiletries??

    • @ToddHata
      @ToddHata  Před 3 lety +2

      Toothpaste, toothbrush and a shaver. The rest I get from hotels, or if I'm staying at an Airbnb I buy whatever size will last me until I move to the next location.

    Some other travelers have found that merino wool underwear and t-shirts fall apart much quicker than other materials. AND is way more expensive. However... CZcamsr video makers can get a nice payback from pushing merino wool clothing.

      Well I don't get paid by any of the clothing companies. They do last less than cotton, but the convenience is worth it to me. My friend brought 16 shirts to Acapulco for 1 week, I brought 4, huge difference just in the shirts only.
