- Meet 19-year-old Megan Buys. She is an all around badass, and awesome minimalist packer, who I met in Thailand while she was traveling for a month out of her 17-liter pack! I have been so inspired by Megan's simple lifestyle that I wanted to share it all with you!
This video is split up into two parts: the first, an interview about Megan and her minimalist lifestyle. The second part Megan will show us everything that's in her small backpack, which is everything that she needs for 1 month of travel and living in Thailand.

Anna Musser I love it!
that bag is my everyday backpack and her whole life is in it. what goals both of you ladies are! Great inspiration! thanks for sharing :)
Tayler Nicole that is awesome that you have the same bag! I'm so glad this video offered you inspiration!
Same
Im so impressed! Until recently, my daily purse was the same size as her pack, and heavier. Since I was diagnosed with degenerative spine/disc disease, Ive been challenging myself to become much more minimalistic in my life. Now my purse is very small with my phone, keys, wallet, kleenex, and lip balm.
My daughter and I have also donated, or recycled 20 large garbage bags of things we didnt need. Im still working at it, so I find your videos very helpful and encouraging, thank you!
Wow, this is so beautiful to read more about. Thank you so much for sharing a bit of your personal story here, and your daughter's too! You both sound fricken awesome. I love that you are thinking more about what you want to have in your lives. I'm honored that you are enjoying my videos in this way. Thank you so much! Sending tons of love!
A sarong would be a great alternative to a blanket. It's lightweight, super compact , warm, and could be a great cover up, skirt, dress, or skirt. 😊
How warm are sarongs?
I've watched this video so many times. I'm obsessed this watching her pack her bag.
Dude, I totally understand :)
Whenever I feel like I've done enough closet purging, I come back to this video and get more inspiration! Love this vid so much.
Wow, that is so cool to hear! Megan is a fricken inspiration
Using a fork as a comb is kind of extreme
at least she has a fork... i just go without
@@kiwizoey413 haha fair enough
Though, i mean I just use my hands :) our fingers are naturally a comb
Have you not seen the little mermaid?? Its called a dingle hopper.
It's not a fork it's a dinglehopper
I've spent four years in the army so my minimalism started before I even understood what it was. I never enjoyed collecting things or having more then one of the same item. I'm just about to leave the army for good and fly to Nepal for 90 days on the 27th February, South East Asia afterwards for 6 months and Australia on a work visa.
I live out of a 36L backpack what caters for all climates and wouldn't change it for the world.
(If you ever want to make a video of what's in my backpack holla)
Daryl that's amazing!
Daryl Holla! Interested in a packing vid for sure. Multi-climates are something I need to learn more about.
well this is 3 months later...how it went?
I would especially be interested in seeing how you managed to be prepared for every weather! cause I often feel like I pack too much stuff to be prepared for everything, but don't aytually need everything in the end.
Video!
I love her Avatar water tribe tattoo!
oh yeah! ! i mightn't have noticed if you hadn't pointed it out :)
You could use your towel as a blanket on the plane...
I thought the same thing!
Iran is beautiful too so if you have any question about Iran wildlife or Cities ,please ask me ?
I appreciate the joyful energy/excitement of this video and also that it isn't selling anything, just providing a link to meganfromthemoon, so we can follow her if we choose to do so.
Yay! I'm so glad this comes through :) xo
I’ve been wondering how to travel with a backpack that’s 30 liters or less due to back pain...this is extreme inspiration! Pretty incredible. Thanks for posting this great interview and demonstration!
Sometimes listening to such passionate people talking I just realise how gorgeous humans are, how joyfully playful we can all be :)
This was a great video. Your appreciation and commitment to listening and really take in what others are saying is so inspiring to me. I am working my way towards minimalism and have donated up to 20 bags of items in the past 6 months. Each time I let go I become more inspired to do the things I love. Thanks for the inspiration!
I really appreciate all of the work you put into putting these videos out and sharing your tips and experiences!
Kat Eliza wow thank you so much! This is such nice feedback to receive!!
sunderingpants don't think she wears them
sunderingpants she uses her swim tops
Wow, I went to my sister in-laws house for 3 days and my bag must have weighed 30 lbs. I am impressed!
This video makes me so happy and motivated! Thanks so much you guys!
audgester thank you for watching! I'm so glad you enjoyed!
How do you shave you leggs? How do you brush your hair? When it rains you're get soaked or just go inside for the whole day? How many times do you have to do laundry? Never use something like pain killers? You don't need something to protect you from sunburn? This sounds te me more like unprepared then minimalistic. But everyone has it's own way to travel I guess....
I can't speak for Megan, but I personally do not shave my legs, brush my hair, or use sunscreen or pain killers. I've never had a problem with getting caught in the rain or getting soaked. And I do laundry about every 10 days-2 weeks while I travel, using various laundry facilities that are easy to find wherever I am. I think diving into more natural hygiene has helped me be minimalist. Thanks for asking!
Right?? Plus one pair of underwear and socks??? That sounds a bit extreme and unsanitary, but again, do you boo
Brittany Taylor you don’t use sunscreen? Why? I mean the other stuff is fair enough, but sunscreen is majorly important...I don’t think it’s a good idea to go without it :/
sounds like you have some anxiety issues
@@lanasa265 sunscreen is unhealthy, causes cancer, and super bad for the environment.
no extra underwear? no sweater? This would only work somewhere warm.
A merino base layer and ultralight down jacket could be added with a compression sack and still fit things in that bag. You can wash underwear every day in the shower if you want.
you can use swim suits as underwear to save space and have double duty stuff
My preference is also some deodorant and a hair brush.
She’s obviously just showing us what she packed. She didn’t say this is all you’ll ever need for every trip ever
How does she change clothes to stay clean when she has so little? I feel like I'd need to pack a few more items if clothing.
She washes with the Lush hair soap. You can also stay clean by eating clean. She's probably raw vegan.
Lush hair soap! Forgot that's all purpose. However, I wonder if she washes her 2 outfits out in the sink every day or every other day? Even raw vegans are outside, sitting on grass, benches, and so on. The clothing itself would feel dirty to me. Especially in a warm climate.
Yeah or in the shower. I'm guessing when needed and when she can. I guess once you do it a lot, you get used to it. You'd have energy to do it because you wouldn't be carrying a heavy bag :)
salliecinnamon I've heard some minimalists bring cloths into the shower and wash them in there lol
salliecinnamon I briefly knew Meagan at a raw vegan farm on the big island, Kanekiki, and a lot of us there would let our clothes dry in the sun so that we could wear them twice before washing in a washing machine on the weekends. Most if not everyone took a shower every day and wore very little during the day so I don't know that we had to worry very much about smell.
This is (seriously) about the 10th time I've watched this video since it came out. I love it!
This channel is so inspiring! I watch tons of videos about travelling, minimumizing gear, how to save money on travel, ect and I always end up back to this channel. Keep up the good work Brittany!
A sweet unspoilt girl who knows what she wants in life. Good for her following her own style and mind. Thanks for an enlightening video.
I love everything tiny and minimalist. It's such a wonderful challenge. I just couldn't hear everything because of the background music. Also, would have loved to hear how she replenishes her stash of toothpaste and soap while on the trip. Loved the video. Thx.
True minimalism in its rarest form! She puts everyone else on CZcams to shame! Amazing. Inspiring. Contentment. ❤
love this! you could make a whole series of packing video-interviews. love the unpacking show and tell and then the pack-it-all-up-again style of packing videos. thank you both for sharing ❤
You can only do this if you travel to a really warm place. No way you can travel with this to Europe, just an example, in winter. Anyway, Megan is so inspiring. Nice video.
fyi, the brand of the bag is Fjällräven and the model is called Kånken, not the other way around. :) I have one myself - best backpack I ever had.
Sara L awesome! Thanks for the clarification! I love that you love this pack too!
Haha, it's a terrible backpack. It has no support in the back, and the straps are thin and awful, but it looks cool so I have one too.
fyi, there's another type of kanken (kanken maxi backpack) that have pad on the strap and it's bigger than Megan's so.. yeah.
Wow , I was in one of those rabbit holes of binging "pack with me" sorts of videos and stumbled on this one. This was so inspiring and shifted my mindset of packing! What a game changer this must be. Thanks for sharing❤
I love the energy you two have together 💚
The last time I flew on a plane for a 5-day trip, I only used my two liter backpack, and that was for a wedding! It was really awesome and freeing to travel with such a small amount of stuff. I have small containers for any toiletries, I have a menstrual cup, and I use clothes and bags that are compactable. Collecting items that have multiple uses and take up such a small amount of space has changed my life! Part of that is due to watching your videos, Brittany. I pick up some really good life tips from you. I've been watching for a few years now. :) Thank you!
Wow, this has inspired me so much! I'm not going travelling but I would love to have so few belongings so that as Megan said, she knows exactly where everything is. I've been in the process of downsizing for about a year but I still feel like I have so much stuff!! Thankyou for showing me its possible to only have the necessities.
I don't know which i enjoyed more...watching what was in the pack or how you reacted to what was in the pack! Loved this ...
19 omg so cool💛💛
This is sooo inspiring! Loved watching this and feel very inspired and motivated to downsize even more because of you
I LOVED this! The energy between the two of you is magical! I have never seen a backpack that folds up, that's soo neat! Awesome how few toiletries Megan has and how natural she keeps it. Soap is such a multi-purpose item! I too always bring my own water bottle and I've got the same backpack. This inspired me to downsize even more when travelling! :D Thank you for that!! :D
Downsizing my travel supplies even further is definitely in my future. Thank you for the inspiration!
Anne Lawrie rock on!
I love the energy between you two in the video. I found myself smiling to my phone in the middle of the airport haha ❤️
Hanna! Ah, I'm so honored to see a comment from you here. And I love that you enjoyed the energy from the two of us and smiled at your phone in the airport. I love you so much!! Hope you are feeling all the good things. xoxoxo
Yasssss! another exciting video:) I'm pumped!
rain 雨 yay!!
I have Kånken too. Actually I have 12 of them in different colors and sizes. This one is Fjällräven Kånken Classic and is 16 liters (not 17 =)
I'm both a collector and a minimalist which is hard to balance. When I travel I only use my Kånken. But I live in Sweden and it's colder here so I need more clothes and mostly use the 20 liter. =)
this was super cute and very inspiring. you both seem to me so calm and focused. hope ill get to this point one day. xx
This is so amazing and inspiring! 🌈☀️
Love this! I just bought the 18L+9L Maxi Kanken backpack and I'm hoping to use it for short and long trips too. I usually pack in the main section, but always seem to have a jacket or something random in the expandable section on the way home! Loved seeing how you could pack for so long in this regular sized Kanken!
Wow, Megan is inspiring! I love your videos so much Brittany!
rachelinaballerina she really is! And thank you!!
This is amazing! Megan is so inspiring! I would definitely pack a lot lighter next time traveling!
Weiyao Fang I love that! Rock on. And I find Megan totally inspiring as well!
Thank you brittany for all your videos :) I donated a lot of my clothes today because I watched your videos. It felt great!
Wow, Megan is fantastic ! I just discovered your channel Brittany and I'm totally blown away! Amazing stuff !
Lovely video :) I have the same backpack and I've been using it for years now and I love how it can fit so much without wearing you down
Lisbeth right on! This is awesome to read!
Thisis really impressive! I don't think I would be able to pack only so few items. But of course this is only possible when going to a warm country like Thailand, where you can dry your clothes over night and rarely get cold..
But anyways, I love Megan. She is so young and such a badass, but she seems really nice and light - like her backpack and her instagram - no capitals or dots or dashes
Its incredible how much they seem to connect, and maybe even like each other ;)
I Love this!! You inspire me so much. I'm going to start travel after the summer (swedish summer) and I just love to know all this stuff about minimalist traveling. Thank you!
Yay! I'm so glad that you find this inspiring. Thanks for watching!
I'm going to do a few weeks of interrail in September this year and this is really an inspiration to pack less, even if I'm going to be travelling when it's a little chill outside...
I can't wait to try out these tips during my next trip! Thanks for sharing!
Yay! I'm so glad you enjoyed! xoxo
I'm impressed. I want to learn from her. I will used common sense to bring what I just need to bring on my trips. Great tips.
I love this so much, all be doing some traveling next month and megan has inspired me to down size on my packing. Thanks for sharing this video brittany.
Rock on! This is so cool to hear!
Really amazing and a fellow Aussie !!! She's a real sweetie isn't she ? Thanks for sharing this with us Brittany :) x
Dimi G yes she really is! Thank you so much for watching and these lovely words!
So inspiring!! Thanks for sharing 😍Happy travels 🙂
This is so great! Thanks to Megan for sharing! I'm moving soon, and my car is rather small, so I look foreword to downsizing a lot!! :)
Can see how she's an inspiration, go Megan!
wow Megan you're so inspiring! thanks for this great meeting :)
Very nice. She's got it down. Thanks for sharing :)
She really does. And it's my pleasure!
Loved this video, I am not a minimalist, but have been trying to downsize my bags/quantity of what I bring, and I also managed to just use a backpack, however, mine is actually made for travelling~ can't wait for more videos on this :) I will try lush soap bar next time !
Really enjoyed the content and editing style here! Also loving the half up pony tail look on you Brittany!
janicew9 mmm thank you so much for this feedback! I'm so glad on both counts!
Wow … I really don't know how you can survive on such little clothing. But the whole idea of minimalizing is encouraging. I have a whole house to minimalize … AND … I want to travel soon, so this has given me a few ideas. Thank you!!
great video girls. Megan, how about adding a sarong not as good as a blanket but it would be another layer and could act as towel and obviously something to wear.... mind you this advice is coming from a 51yr old bloke.... it might not be that good advice lol x
Richard Pickford sounds like a great idea!
Me being a 27 year old would agree though! I even use them at home when I'm not travelling for so many things. In a lot of countries I feel like it's a travelers must-have to respect religion and so on.
The video is amazing!
You can also use a sarong or an African kanga for a duvet, a blanket to sit on etc.
I use them all the time, a sarong is the most useful item when camping and traveling.
Yes also to cover up at places like temples and it can be used as a skirt, dress, beach towel, blanket and a cover up, as a shawl and headscarf .....yes good idea x
Very awesome! I have a trip planned for California in about a month, and I already pack pretty minimally. But I'm definitely going to try to bring even less after this. Thanks for sharing Brittany!
yay! I am so glad you enjoyed! Congrats and happy adventures on your upcoming trip!
I love the way Brittany looks her 😊 But thank you, very helpful video in terms of packing :D
Fantastic video! I loved seeing you both together :-) Megan's minimalist packing is so inspiring and your video content has been amazing Brittany, love and missing you both xxx
Oldhollywoodglamour Rosie! So beautiful to see a comment from you here! Love and miss you so much! And thank you for this!!
Aww thanks! :-) yes was always shy about leaving comments xxx
*My only question is do you just wear the dress everyday until you feel it needs washing?🤷🏾♀️**Oh, another thing, link for the menstrual cup please!!*
Gorgeous Australian Minimalist... Love from a fellow Australian Minimalist. You go girl xoxo
I love this! I am also obsessed with organizing, Megan, I totally identified with everything you said!
Sister! I'm so jazzed that you watched this video! One of the first things I ever told Megan was that she reminded me of you! She's such a cool chick. I know we would all get along super well. Love you so much. And I love you, Megan!
Sis! As soon as she started talking about organizing, I figured you had told her about me! Would love to geek out with you both at the same time! Loves!
Wow, amazing, love it. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing! This is my goal to travel only with my 16L kanken backpack. Thanks for sharing.
This motivated me heaps, great to see and I loved how she spoke of the emotional benefits from downsizing, really hit home to me as i myself suffer from anxiety too. Only thing that concerned me was she had one pair of bather bottoms and one pair of underwear... that doesnt sound hygenic like.... I dont know it worried me about the comb too, like really how much space would a comb take up, they are flat and that made me think it could be too obsessive
The bather bottoms and underwear can both serve as underwear so she can wear one pair, wash it and wear the other while the first pair are drying. Also she may sleep without underwear, so she can wash them before going to bed and they will be dry by morning.
I love this so much such great tips:)
BitsByBee I agree!!
I'm not into minimalist packing but I'm so glad I watched this! The general principles are iInspiring, it was useful, and wonderful interview! :O) PS Love the back!
Debra Goring yay! I'm so glad you did too! Thank you!!
Bought a wood comb yesterday. Got the bamboo toothbrush, Crystal deodorant and Lush Soap. Best combo for Toiletries.
Wonderful video-- and, yes, actually very helpful. Thank you!
Great video Brittany...Megan is a doll...one item not discussed ...a raincoat...or poncho for any rain..l've travelled in warm tropics before..lived in shorts...but had monsoon rains and got drenched...maybe a thin "windbreaker" type coat?
that's really impressive! on what kind of locations (motel, campingssite,...) were you staying? did you have enough opportunities to wash your clothes? what did you use? and which kind of climate did you face?
could you talk about how you camp (sleep) when you're backpacking? do you use a tent, just a sleeping bag, a hammock, etc? I'm going to Woodstock fruit festival and I'm trying to find the most minimal supplies to sleep since I'm doing the camping option. I would rather not buy an entire tent because that is really bulky, but I'm not sure what else would be comfortable. I've slept comfortably on Japanese foldup mats like the one in your apartment, so I don't need much padding.
Love your videos, Brittany! :D
Ah, I am so glad! Thank you for watching! xoxo
Thanks for this! My sister is doing a destination wedding on the island of st. maarten and I wanted to see if it was possible to fit everything I needed in a kanken. It's only a week long and I wasn't planning on bringing much anyway.
I LOVE her backpack!
It's super rad!
Great info!!! Thank you!!! Is everything merino wool? Cotton? Man made? Dries overnight??
Which soap is Megan using for her hair/body/clothes? Also which menstrual cup is that?! So awesome! X
I think it's a lush shampoo bar!
The menstrual cup is the Lily cup compact :)
You two nailed it in your responses below! Lush is the soap and The Lily cup from intimina is right: www.intimina.com/eshop/index.php?route=product%2Fproduct&product_id=107&language=en
Great Video! Inspired to downsize on my next trip
alteredillusions100 rock on!!
Loved this!
Gabi NS yay! Thank you!
You guys are so inspiring!
Thank you so much!!
I have the kanken mini and it's doooope. I use it basically as a purse/mini beach bag in the summer bc it's waterproof
badass! Thanks for sharing this!
I was wondering if you use that collapsible cup to drink from. I had collapsible cup, but it never worked well.
I wonder what her specific Lush shampoo/soap/detergent bar is, because her hair looks sooooo good
Right on young lady!! Love your organizing skills. I am also passionate about organizing.
Haylien Dreams l.p.
Wow!
I hope to travel like that one day.
What's the worst thing that could happen is a good question to ask yourself.
I al ways bring a lot of warm clothes (and warm pyjamas) because I easily get cold. I usually travel within middle/northern Europe. Being cold means no sleep or no fun. I need a lot of medications and recently bought foldable crutches. I hope I won't need them on the two week holiday in the summer but everything fits in my 35 liter carry on now, including one of the crutches! Just 5 outfits. Four lightweight summer outfits, one warm.
I have the Riutbag R35.
Wow I've used the bag for a week this is a bit extreme lol! Very impressive
I want to know where did you find your Mentrual Cup at that size !! And for your straw is it filtring your water ?
that water tribe symbol 💕
This is fantastic... How would you travel if you were in a cold weather destination?
Thanks so much for asking! I don't enjoy the cold, but I'm excited to find a minimalist traveler who does and interview them!
Brittany Taylor I'm a minimalist "traveler" who enjoys the cold. I don't travel often (hence the quotations) and really only in the US nothing like Antarctica(I'd like to go there at some point though :d) However, I am used to traveling up north even in the winter with just 19 liters. (not extreme cold but definitely cold)
Great video and loving Brittany and Conor's channels! Glad to learn of the Lush multi-purpose bar. Surprised how few clothes she has for a whole month. On the other hand, when I visited Thailand I spent so much time just in a bikini anyway so actually in that hot climate guess it does make sense. But not sure what she'd wear if she ever washes the clothes and they're not dry yet.
