House of the Dragon is the Game of Throne's successor show based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a history of House Targaryen set 300 years before the events in GoT. The showrunners of House of the Dragon are Ryan Condal along with battle-tested GoT veteran Miguel Sapochnik.
Set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series tells the story of a turbulent period for House Targaryen, one that set sibling against sibling and dragon against dragon. The point of contention: who should rule on the Iron Throne, of course.
“If you’d like to know a bit more of what the show will be about… well, I can’t actually spill those beans,” Martin teased in his blog, “but you might want to pick up a copy of two anthologies I did with Gardner Dozois, Dangerous Women, and Rogues and then move on to ArchmaesterGyldayn’s history, Fire & Blood.”
Dangerous Women includes what press materials describe as a “35,000-word novella” by Martin called “The Princess and the Queen, or, the Blacks and the Greens,” which is “about the Dance of the Dragons, the vast civil war that tore Westeros apart nearly two centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones.”
Rogues, meanwhile, includes Martin’s story “The Rogue Prince, or, a King’s Brother,” which chronicles “the early life, adventures, misdeeds, and marriages of Prince Daemon Targaryen,” considered “one of the biggest rogues in the entire history of Ice and Fire.”
Finally, the novel Fire & Blood, released in November 2018, is the first novel of a two-part history of the Targaryens in Westeros.
“Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen - the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria - took up residence on Dragonstone,” according to the book’s description on the author’s site. “Fire & Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.”
House of the Dragon will be about Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war.
About George R.R. Martin’s involvement, we know only what he stated himself. George R.R. Martin stated: "I expect to be involved in [House of the Dragons] to some extent...and, who knows, if things work out, I may even be able to script a few episodes, as I did for the first four seasons of GAME OF THRONES. But... let me make this perfectly clear... I am not taking on any scripts until I have finished and delivered WINDS OF WINTER. Winter is still coming, and WINDS remains my priority, as much as I'd love to write an episode of HOUSE."

I finished it this week. Enjoyed Aegon’s Conquest but House of the Dragon events were the best part of the book imo

Robert's Rebellion prequel is the one i want the most i don't know why George always refuses to it because of its story being directly connected to Game of Thrones and all characters being familiar it'll be the most interesting and attractive for the book reader or TV show viewers alike
With changes from the book to the show it’ll be hard not to mess something up
I think the dance of the dragons is a cool change of pace but I definitely wanna see the rebellion and all of these older lords in the GoT storied youths

Baratheons have the strongest genetical traits. Why didn't they keep Rhaenys dark-haired? My favorite Houses still remain the troublemakers. Targaryens and Lannisters.

@@lgt_jne cos people who don't read the books most likely assume all targaryens are grey or silver haired with blue eyes not white blonde with purple. So Valyrian style name must be targaryen so must be grey and blue eyes
They were going to change her name as well because it was similar to Rhaeneyra but Ryan refused be thankful that you're getting the character as it is with minimum changes
I like that these narrations are being done by cast of the main show. It elevates it as an audiobook and makes it more engaging.

You know my most favorite Baratheon was Princess Shireen because she was such a sweet yet intelligent girl and always wanted to help someone in need when she didn’t even have to ask. I still don’t forgive King Stannis, Queen Selyse nor Melisandre for what they did to her. Selyse may have tried to save her daughter at the last minute but that still doesn’t change the fact that she wanted to burn her beforehand.
Gerard Butler from the movie 300 would be perfect for a young Robert Baratheon.

Robert, during the Rebellion, was in his early 20s at best. Gerard would’ve been perfect if cast in early 2000s but he’s 52 now. Bit of a stretch to believe he’s in his early 20s if cast now.

Good soldiers don't always make good kings. We saw it with Robert. But I say Daemon Targaryen would be a good king even as a good warrior. The poor people love him.
Robert was actually a good king, he upheld peace even if it meant having a VERY good council to your work, all of it only went to shit because the incest lover wanted to protect her secrets and got Jon Arryn killed.
Not even the people around him and closest to him love him. Except for Rheanyra maybe.
