Dee Gunter is a breeder of Coonhounds. She breeds Bluetick, American English (Redtick) Coonhounds and Redbone Coonhounds.
The Redbone Coonhound is an American breed of dog used for hunting raccoon, deer, bear, and cougar. The American Kennel Club standard says, "The Redbone mingles handsome looks and an even temperament with a confident air and fine hunting talents."[2] This breed has been registered with the United Kennel Club since 1902 and the American Kennel Club since 2009. The Redbone is the breed of hound featured in the classic novel Where the Red Fern Grows.
The English Coonhound, also referred to as the American English Coonhound (by the American Kennel Club only) or the Redtick Coonhound, is a breed of coonhound that originated and is typically bred in the Southern United States. It is descended from hunting hounds brought to America by settlers during the 17th and 18th centuries, resulting in the dogs known as the "Virginia Hounds". The breed's first recognition came from the United Kennel Club in 1905 as the English Fox and Coonhound. Further recognition has been granted in recent years by the American Kennel Club, first in the Foundation Stock Service and in 2011 as a fully recognized member of the hound group.
In this video Dee gives us a full rundown of the American English and Redbone Coonhounds. The American English formerly known as the Redtick Coonhound is a more freindly Coonhound in comparison to the Redbone. The Redbone is much more aloof and wary of new people.
Stories like the dog protecting the young woman is what keeps me being a breeder. Any little story of how my puppies have changed someone’s life or completed a family make it all worth it! Hardest job in the world but so worth it!
Grandpa raised hounds and the Redbones were my favorite. Getting one very soon, can't wait to put em in the woods.

@@glibbergloop yea same here I have two redbone coonhounds named daisy and Rick they are the clowns of the dog world they are so friendly! they don't hunt but they shure have there favorite activities Rick his favorite activity is swimming he loves it so much and daisy her favorite activity is going on hikes and runs Rick likes hikes but not running lol he hates it lol
Where do you live? Is the Redbone Coonhound dog called Old Dan or Little Ann from 'Where the Red Fern Grows'? I have never seen those beautiful dogs in person because I live in Ottawa, Canada and I live in a city. I would love to get these lovely dogs, but my father would not let me because I do not live in a farm and I do not go hunting.

My family has a redbone. Really amazing/quirky full of personality. As a pup my dad took him to watch my first half marathon run. And after the race all the runners were gathered for placing. It was relatively quiet till Bake decided to howl very loudly making the whole event bust out in laughter. Love that dog
My Redbone, Pepper, loves all people except smokers 😆 and ooo has she saved me a few times on hiking trails between weird men and bobcats. There was one particular time with a guy coming toward us on the trail. She put herself between us, head down and hackles up. She moved around me, kept herself between me and the guy and kept her head on a swivel as we kept walking. No one was touching her mama. ❤ she is my heart. I love her fur-brother, my mini schnauzer, but she is amazing.

Ya "Where the Red Fern Grows" is one of my all time favorites. I remember it was the first book of my life where the ending was not the typical everyone lives happily ever after. An absolute must read book for anyone that is a dog lover. Even if you are an adult, if you haven't read it you should.

I grew up with redbone and bluetick hounds out in east Texas. My family used to go on hunting trips twice a year, and seeing the dogs on the hunt was amazing. They have so much personality and they're great family pets, you can never go wrong with owning a coonhound!
Redbones are the best looking of any hound. Just so dignified.

My cousin had a redbone rottweiler mix. It was taller and slightly thicker than a redbone, with a bigger head. But it was very light and ppowerful with a clean head that was large but not heavy like a Rottweiler. It was basically a 25 percent larger redbone and had the pure red color like the one in this video. One of the prettiest dogs I've ever seen. Breathraking sight.

Best dog i've ever had, a Redbone.
My granddad was born in 1922 in Lloyd FL. That's just outside of Tallahassee. He had red bones and blue ticks. Had some hounds that were black and tan too. They hunted small game with them. I want some just because pop pop had them. He had a black horse named Charlie too. I'm gonna need a small farm🤣🤣🤣
I LOVE my redbone! He is just over a year old now and is pretty large at 76 lbs. He loves to track squirrels and deer. I can't imagine having another breed of dog. Love this guy.

I grew up with English and Gordon Setters, I had a Springer Spaniel in the past, and I currently have a Welsh Terrier (our 2nd). I've always loved coonhounds, and in January my son and his girlfriend just rescued a 2 year old male Redbone, Roscoe. I just had Roscoe with me for a week while they were on vacation. I am so in love with this dog! He is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever met. My Welsh is a little territorial when another dog comes to the house, but they worked it out, and the Redbone totally accommodated him lol. I pretty sure there's a Redbone in my future!

If your thinking about getting one of these breeds. A red bone is stubborn and hard to handle but will love you more than it will love it's self. Mine is a great working dog but is constantly testing the rules. Doesn't do well with strangers unless off leash. Loves retrieving and swimming. Will not use mine to track unless on a lead. When this dog has a mission he will not give up so keep that in mind when using it for hunting.
Also will try to eat just about anything and requires constant watching for the first few years
How did you start him off leash? We have a young redbone and he thinks it’s a game to run across the street.

Our redbone coonhound Shelby did the same thing with our daughter, she took her for a walk and a guy in a van drove up behind her our Shelby barked her head off and put herself in-between the van and our daughter and backed her up all the way to our driveway where dad was working on a car.

My dog is 3 parts beagle and 1 part redbone- really cool to find out about the Redbone.
Funnily enough, even though he’s mostly beagle he has a LOT of Redbone features.
He’s almost entirely white, brown, and black and has a beagle’s body but redbone ears and legs, with a real mix on his face.
He was “raised” by a pure blood beagle male & a female “chawinie” (Winnie mixed with a Chihuahua) so he actually like a beagle but slightly more goofy.
A scent-hound is THE BEST for perimeter/ home defense! They know if you're supposed to be near their territory, instantly!

Funny how you mentioned a comparison between Terriers and the Coonhounds. I have a Miniature Schnauzer and a Redtick Coonhound together, both girls. My Coonhound is obsessed with the Miniature Schnauzer. ❤️

I NEVER knew about redbones until I met my husband. He had quite a few with only his grumpy remaining and grumpys half sister lulu. Grumpy is the definition of aloof and accepting of everyone while my lulu is more an observer who has before say at my feet blocking me from a dog twice her size that she deemed a threat. You see multiple personalities with ours on their temperament around the kids, to how they are around adults, and the switch that flips when they’re doing the hunt. 💜
My little puppy likes to howl at odd ass hours sometimes at 3 or 5 am just cause !

I lost a Beagle back in 2019, after his death I begged for a coonhound and finally got the chance after proving it’d be in good hands. I used this video a lot to let my parents see the dogs. I got my 2 year old Redbone named Maui and then Christmas 2020 I received Harley an American English Redtick, this video takes me bake to when I first asked for the dogs that changed my life

I just want to clarify, a dog that does a task to aid a person with PTSD is technically a service dog. A therapy dog is s dog that provides comfort to multiple people, usually in a hospital setting. There is no federal certificate for a service dog though private organizations may certify their program dogs
Jennifer Turner no. They are actually an emotional support animal. I would know. My girlfriend has one for that. It is NOT a service dog. Service dogs help with physical disabilities whereas emotional support dogs help with mental health.
Also a little side note. Therapy dogs are a dog trained to help many different people in a therapy session. My therapist has one and she goes to work with her. She's my therapy dog.

Our female red bone coon hound is 90 lbs and no fat on body! Did dna test. Several hound breeds in dna. Happy go lucky, hard to train but very loving!
we just rescued a puppy from a local rescue. (4 mo old). She (and her siblings) are definitely hounds of some sort. She's solid red with a little white on her chest. One sister and her brother look like red tick and one sister looks blue tick. She is the SWEETEST puppy ever! Waiting on the DNA results to come in!! We've always had labs, never had hounds so I'm eager to learn this breed.
A few weeks ago t got adopted by a Red Tick hound about 2 years old. Seems coon trained but otherwise not. Very nice dog and I plan to train him (not for hunting). I have had dogs all my life and eventually they became voiced trained and I walked them off lease
when in a good spot. My concern with this hunting dog (and experience) is that when he gets a strong scent his ears shut down and he is off. This happened the second week we went walking off leash and he was gone two days and came home with a bite wound that became infected. I live on an option

How well do these dogs handle heat and cold? We have a rescue that we believe is largely Redbone Coonhound. He seemed more stressed on the last hike we did and took longer to recover. The Border Collie and Texas Heeler recovered quickly. Oddly they hike less and spend more time under the A/C. What heritable diseases are common?

I live in Michigan and got a redtick coon hound mix. Her ears are a bit shorter then a full blood redtick and her fur one her back is a near back and redish in color. Everybody thinks she is a boy and a beagle. I wish that there was a way to send a pic. But she is beautiful. Some people call she a bluetick coon hound. They just don't know these dogs.

Coonhounds are the best, I grew up with golden retrievers, and they are great, all dogs are, but I will never get another breed after my BTCH.

People do not care for them in TN we had too sell them for 50 to 30 dollars . Nobody knows what they are . Timberjacks Redbones . And have papers on all of them .

I have red bone/rhodesian ridgebacks, brothers, one is more coonhound and the other is more rhodesian. Absolutely sweet personalities, love to antagonize each other, and, at night, they take turns being lap dogs, at 80 and 75 pounds! 😁

Coonhounds are the best breed. All coonhounds have the same traits they just have different colours. Kind of like how a GSP can be any tricoloured ticking combination for that breed.

I have a redbone coonhound mix breed but she is almost completely redbone coonhound looking, her ears are slightly shorter than most redbone coonhounds and she has a reddish tan color slightly redder than a rhodesian ridgeback her tan fawn color is similar to ridgeback but she has darker red hair/ fur reddish tan colored solid with a little white around her chest, her nose is black and she has a little white around her face because she is 9 years old now but she is definitely full of life and loves to go out and walk with me, and she loves to go for ride in the car and look at everything, until she gets tired enough to take a nap lol, and she doesn't get along with other animals unless she is socialized with them, unfortunately for squirrels she doesn't like them, except for the hunting of them and if she's given a chance she will grab it and kill it, because 1 jumped up and grabbed the face of my border collie zoomzoom and she was freaking out because she was just curious about it and she was yiping and miley the redbone grabbed it and thew it into the air she was just trying to help her friend zoomzoom because it jumped up on her face lol. Poor squirrel had no chance. But miley is a extremely intelligent and loyal, loving dog and she will sit and lay down and just want to be able to a part of the family and ofcourse she is my favorite loyalty until death with her
