Appalachian Bear Hunting with Hounds | Bear Grease Roadshow

- čas přidán 20. 03. 2023
- In this episode, Clay explores the origins of a hound breed developed in the Southern Appalachian mountains - the Plott Hound. In true Americana fashion, these dogs are named after the Plott family. They’re the only hound breed that didn’t descend from European fox hounds and were bred as bear dogs. Clay visits Roy Clark of East Tennessee to learn about his family’s line of Plott hounds, his philosophy on life, and to go on a bear hunt with the Laurel Mountain Bear Hunters. Mr. Roy is a relic of times passed in Appalachia and is a legend in the bear hunting community.

I'm not American. But one of my biggest pet peeves is when I hear ppl say "Americans have no culture" it's an incredibly ignorant statement. America has a multitude of deep rooted cultures and Clay is doing an amazing job of showcasing some of them. This is a show worth watching even if one has no interest in hunting at all. Keep up the amazing work. ❤
I’m always surprised when people who know nothing about Americans other than California/what Hollywood portrays tell me America has no culture. 😂
Betaaa!
Goddamn right
In my country we talk about how badass Americans are with hunting, fishing, racing, guns, fishing gators, badass cars, the war heroes like white feather, Desmond doss etc...
We also crap on them based on their idiotic gender fluid bs, cancel culture, how young people will sell their souls for clout and other dumbfookery.
But I've never heard anyone say they doesn't have culture.
Imo they've a very diverse culture. Asians, African Americans, Europeans, first world people, etc.. all these people bring their own culture to the country and its pretty cool
The South & Midwest are the only cultures left.
I don't know how you could watch one of these and not conclude that Clay is a passionate and world class historian. He's as natural on camera as he is on the audio content and in a deer stand. He helps his guests' personalities shine which is the true mark of a professional interviewer. Well done Clay and team.
Clay does so good with the bear grease podcast I'm so glad he putting things into video.
his podcast is my favorite, after that is meat eater then the trivia game. i always look forward to them
I grew up in East Tennessee hunting bear, deer, and wild hogs around with people like this. It was fantastic to get to see someone like Clay paint those great people in a positive light.
Why don’t you do it anymore?
@@johnhansen8272 I still do! Haven’t stopped
Does anyone know if Clay has done an episode(s) with some of the old bulldog hog hunters down south???? The old timers are still at it but in their late 70's and 80's. Using White English Bulldogs, American Bulldogs, Alapaha's and Classic American PitBull Terriers. Southern bulldogs and pit-bulls have been an integral part of southern and Appalachian history - farm life and wild hog hunting. Would love to hear their stories and methods of collaboration on the hunt with their dogs.
You ever hunt bumpus cove?
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Roy.... For 45 min I hung on his every word... He's a national treasure.
This episode really hits home. I grew up in the 80's and early 90's with the most incredibly loving, and tough, plot hound. That was during the time when we used to be able to hunt bears with dogs here in California. Quit was not in her vocabulary, even when my dad's biggest bear threw her against a tree by her head. She acted as though nothing happened, got back in the fight, and went on to live a full life. Trinity Annabelle, Belle for short, will always be missed.
Great memories thanks for sharing. Respect from Alberta 🇨🇦
Miss the days of running bears with dogs here in kommiefornia , need to get someone in office to correct our idiotic non scientific game management tactics that have been voted in with hearts and minds feelings campaigns
I rescued one, but never used her for hunting. She was just a loyal and sweet pet. They are very tough dogs. We miss her too.
@@matthewmuhlberg9894 People do not understand that proper management keeps the bear population healthier and causes less human and bear conflict. The great majority of hunters believe in conservation and proper land management. They provide funds and smarter management plans. The huge fires in Cali are one example of what happens when land is not properly managed.
My only complaint is that this video isn't 2 hours or longer. I loved it!
First rule of Marketing: Always leave them wanting more!
Check out Blessed Outdoors ‘black bear hunting with hounds is addictive’ if you need more bear hunting content. The dude makes great videos and could use a little love.
Thanks Clay, as always for honoring our family, friends and heritage.
Meateater is fortunate to have you!!
Anything Clay touches seems to be pure gold, but this has to be my favorite MeatEater short yet. Keep the Bear Grease content coming!!
This is the best Meateater episode across all the shows. I have fished and backpacked in the backcountry of the Southern Appalachians my entire life. I have come across hundreds of these dogs in NC and TN over the years. So fascinating to learn all this history. Years ago, out on the Art Loeb Trail, I had a pack of these dogs come thru my camp at full-bore in the middle of the night, I'm now certain they were actively on a bear.
Clay and MeatEater team, thanks for putting this out! There's been a lot happening lately to challenge deep-rooted heritages like hound hunting and trapping and I'm thankful for a video like this to educate and represent this tradition in such a positive light. We need more of it, without a doubt.
I'm a proud North Carolina native and it's always cool to see the local culture talked about. Usually it's negative stereotypes but there is so much beauty and culture in the beautiful area. Good job as always.
I “discovered you” on the meat eater podcast. Now on Bear Grease. Watching your Appalachian Bear hunting show on you tube right now. I find your narration and choice of words almost mesmerizing. You are precise in speech and genuine. You make me want to hunt a bear for no reason other than to be like you. Thank you for your content and seemingly good nature.
Clay your doing amazing work! Hunters will never be able to convince the anti-hunting community but you are helping persuade the moderate opinions that these types of hunts are important to our heritage. Knowledge is power, keep guarding the gate one story at a time.
Hunting with dogs isnt really hunting.
💯
@@AlphaQHard That's literally one of the original purposes of domestic dogs, to hunt with them. To say that it's not "real hunting" is nonsense.
Been hunting for 35 years, bear hunting for most of that time, BUT, I can't get behind bear hunting w dogs, here in WI, hound hunters are horrible private property trespassers. They don't even apologize. Horrible people skills, just aholes when it comes down to it.
@@2devious724
To each their own. I think chasing an animal up a tree with dogs is lame and theres no sport or honor in it
Fantastic video! Thank you, Clay. I am basically an old has-been bear guy, what with age and health issues rearing their heads, but back not all that long ago, I used to love me a good bear chase in my native northern Michigan woodlands and cedar swamps. I pray to live long enough to see my grandsons enjoy and thrive as bear hunters too. It was nostalgic, as well as enjoyable, to watch your hunt with these North Carolinian mountaineers.
I pray a bear sends you to hell
This series is incredible! Documenting these traditions, people and places is extremely valuable and important work. Reminds me of a modern day version of the Foxfire book series. Thank you for doing this sir.
This series is so damn good! Thank you to everyone involved in making this for our viewing pleasure. You guys and gals are awesome!
Amazing story. I really appreciate the history of bear hunting and learning the old traditions our fore fathers started. I appreciate your work to keep those traditions alive. Your story telling and productions make it hard to put down and often revisit them multiple times. Great work!
EASILY my favorite episode of any meat eater series. Oh my God that looked amazing. I've always been fascinated by hunting dogs, and have raised several, and trained several more. There's nothing in the outdoors that makes me happier than watching a dog hunt. God I want to try this, now. I have to try this, now. Incredible episode. Simply incredible.
Clay is awesome, puts out an awesome message for everyone & is really good on camera/podcast! Super stoked he's been on the MeatEater team and videos! These videos have been great
Clay, you and your team are doing an incredible job with this series. Every episode feels like a celebration of life, and the care and personal involvement you guys have with research and presentation is very respectable. Thank y'all for sharing
Great job Clay! Getting invited into these closely guarded family hunting groups is an amazing privelege. No matter the hunted animal, hounds have a special way of perpetuating these generational traditions and gatherings.
As always, an education. Great to see Mr Roy still hunting
Here in North Carolina there's a saying "From Manteo to Murphy." There's a lot of culture in between.
Been a long time viewer and fan, but this has been one of the best series outside of ME proper. Carries all the depth of story and spirit that ties to the hunt, and I hope it becomes a mainstay. Great job, Clay and team!
I'm from Northern WV and went to Randolph County Elkins,WV.
I met them boys in pipeline work.
This story is exactly what I experienced.
I'm telling you now this video is cake compared what to what I experienced.
I walked 17miles in a day to backpack a dog out that was mauled but I got my 1st bear and saved that Ole girl from Dien.
Never ever will I regret any of that.
As a East Tn bear hunter myself and huge fan of Clay and the story teller he is , I appreciate the way he speaks and sticks up for us hound hunters !!
Thank you is not enough to describe my appreciation of all your effort. I been missing your bear hunting videos. Your UNIQUE style of explanation and views is simple and respectful.
Said it once I will say it again: the best series and personality on the platform.
Clay is doing phenomenal work, can't wait to see more!
Love watching Appalachian hunting. Watching hunting out west used to be my favorite but watching these guys come to my neck of the woods is always cool
I loved the episode of the podcast! Hopefully this is just as good or better!
So cool! Great work Clay.
Educational and entertaining at the same time. Can’t wait for the next one!!
I am a Asian American im 32 years old and living in Minnesota. Not to trash talk but I have a blood hound bastard hound mix. Man he is a great dog never gets tried does everything from treeing squirrels pheasant turkeys etc can dig into rabbit holes. Idk why hound are looked down upon. He’s only 3 years old I get it but I think the two hound breeds coming together makes it even better.
I’m from Victoria in Australia and this is the exact same culture we have here with hunting Sambar deer with hounds. There’s just nothing like hounds and training your own dogs!
Great video!!
This is one of the best yet! Thanks for showcasing Appalachian culture at its finest Clay.
Thanks for putting things into video format. Fabulous job.
Again, Clay thank you for a great video. Thanks for taking us along to meet your friends and hunt with you
By far one of my favorite series!!
The best bear dog videos I have seen! You all made that happen! I have to include Roy Clark and his Dogs! Thank you for sharing this!!
Ol Steve knows how to find the good ones for sure. The way you see it is way different than most that host a hunting show. I love it and how things are put down. Shows like this have me back watching hunting videos.
Great video showcasing the passion hound hunters have. Not only for the game but for their hounds and the persistence it takes to make it all work.
I grew up in the mountains of western Wyoming. In the early ‘60’s, we had a hunter there who had a pack of Plott hounds. He hunted black bears and mountain lions. Great video Clay, love this roadshow series.
I appreciate how different this is from every other hunting show. Truly a history documentary more than anything. love it
Excellent video. You captured a small piece of American history and did it justice. More please!!!
Plott hounds and Plott men are incredible. 👍👍
Great job! Thanks to all who preserve this way of life.
Absolutely enjoy every one of clays shows... Keep up the great work buddy... Your channel will blow up I'm sure.
I love that this episode is showcasing the Plott Hound. I rescued Plott hound mixes and they are amazing dogs. They are every bit hunting dogs, livestock dogs (and I did not train them to be, they just did it naturally), and guard dogs. I’ve had quite a few dogs, but this breed is truly quite incredible.
Great episode Clay. Love your podcast and any episode you're on!
There is nothing better than watching good dogs work
200 years from now, historians will study this video to see what Appalachian culture was like. Thanks for making it.
Clay and Roy what a team!!!!
Bring it on!!!
What a brilliant episode! So rich in history and genuine honor and respect. Just fantastic!
My grandfather brought his plott line with him from north Carolina to Detroit when the family moved up here in the mid 50's. I was fortunate enough to hunt the last of that bloodline when I was a kid. Part of me knew when I buried that last dog I was gunna be burying my best friend next. After watching this it just really makes me wish I would have listened to myself back then.
I've got a Plott litter that will be ready in 4 weeks. 🐾
These are my new favorite documentary series!!!
Mr Newcomb, congratulations! What a wonderful story you have given us. Thank you Sir.
Meateater crew is just killing it. Putting out so much great content I can’t even keep up with it all!
Doing a great job showcasing and promoting the breed , keep up the great work !
Awesome video. Clay I wish you still made videos on your channel.
So excited to watch this right now! Love clay
Clay you do a great job portraying this awesome way of life
I could listen to Clay all day!
Love it . Keep it coming please. Best shows on CZcams.
Love these episodes!!! Especially this one. Reminds me of the Penn Marydel fox hounds back in PA. Get togethers with hounds and listening to them make music.
Awesome to know Clay is a Plott man! That’s some awesome history right there!
Clay I’m really enjoying this series. September and October of 2020 I went in my first bear hunt with hounds and was a memorable experience that I’ll never forget here in Wisconsin. I’d really love to go in one again
Great episode. Heartwarming to see plott hounds get some recognition. We ran plott hounds in northern WI many years until the wolves killed some of our best dogs and we stopped running bear. I remember traveling with my dad for UKC events all over the country with our best plott, Willy. Thanks.
I'm a dog man to my core. I've hunted with hounds since I can remember. I have 11 myself. I love this episode so much! Awesome!
I like the other Meat Eater shows as they are full of info and good times. However, now that Bear Grease has a youtube show I'm hooked! not only do I get to listen to the awesome podcast now I get to watch it too. The connection between the old school and today's dates is flawless thanks to (Clay Newcomb) and his ability to take us to the good old times by the way he talks about this experience.
Love this series Clay!
Incredible episode as usual Great job Clay
Love all my MeatEater shows about families!!!
Another great production. Keep ‘em coming.
Thanks for sharing. Reminds me of the hunts in WV.
Clays got it going on, in my opinion this is the best show on CZcams and is also the best podcast.
This is probably my favorite piece of all time from Meateater
Clay is doing a GREAT job.
Such a great episode!
My plottshound Bella is the best damn dog I've ever had. Never bear hunted with her but I'm positive she'd be badass at it. Plottshound dogs are absolutely incredible.
World class content here. Excellent work Clay and team.
Goll dang I’m really liking clays series. Adds another level to the already great podcast.
Loving all the hounds in the last few episodes
Enjoy the slices of American tradition most of us never get to see. Thank you.
Clay is a great dude man. Love watching hunts with him in it.
Way to represent Haywood County with the Balsam Range 'Art of Music' festival shirt! Plotts/Bluegrass/Balsam Range - the epitome of Haywood County, NC
Thanks clay for doing this series. I absolutely love it. You are a exceptional story teller. I know guys that run plots not far from me. They are definitely proud of their dogs. 👍👍
Absolutely love bear grease
The bear grease series is awesome the beat part is the history told
Clay that there is another 10 ring show, amazing!
Phenomenal. Born in North GA , raised in SW VA so I have a love for Appalachia.
Plotts, my favorite dogs. I rescued a female14 years ago. She was my girl. Lost her last year at the ripe age of 13. Great hog and bear hounds.
Well done Clay you do a great job I learn every time I watch
Clay, I love the way you show respect to the older generation.
Such a good episode and amazing series.
I rescued a Plott. She was the dark base coat with light stripes. Sweetest dog ever, but she would perk up when she smelled bears in the area. My guess is she got lost during a hunt because she was definitely a nice specimen. Beautiful, big girl and we miss her.
Outstanding storytelling! I'm from East Tennessee, and my high school had a hound dog club. Of course most weren't Plotts for bear. Those are special creatures.
"Some say he's a lot like me...." I remember that song from one of the original podcasts, i cried for some reason. Who knows why but I did. Beautiful.
Love the emphasis on the south that this show is about
