  • Javagal Srinath Magical Bowling Spell of 6/21 vs South Africa Leads India to Incredible Test Victory : India vs South Africa 1st Test 1996 at Ahmedabad.
    #JavagalSrinath #IndvSA #CricketClassics
    Defending a modest 170 in the 4th innings, Srinath gave India the perfect start picking up 2 wickets of successive balls in the very first over. Later when South Africa were comfortably placed at 96/4, Srinath came back and ripped through the South African batting order as the visitors were bundled out for 105 in a dramatic collapse and India won the match by 64 runs.

    Srinath’s career graph would have looked very different if he played in today’s times. A genuine quick, he was hampered by the lack of appropriate pitches, poor conditions and lack of fast bowling culture that existed in India in 90s through early 2000s. India relied on spin and spin only to win matches. Fast bowlers really had no role to play and sometimes he was in the team just for the sake of having a fast bowler. 70-80% of the bowling was in the hands of spinners. His job was to mainly take the shine off the ball and prepare it for Anil Kumble and the other spinners and create the route near the crease with his bowling. Azhar and Tendulkar mismanaged him by allowing him to bowl his heart out on India’s dust bowl pitches where the ball never rose over the knee pad and the pitch had nothing to offer the fast bowlers. Also, the man had no real fast bowling mentorship. Kapil, never the tear away fast bowler himself, was waning and at the end of his career by the time Srinath arrived and was more focused on prolonging his career. The less said about Prabhakar the better. So Srinath was India’s lone fast bowling warrior on service and had pitiable bowling partners in Venkatesh Prasad, Abey Kuruvilla, Ajit Agarkar, Debasis Mohanty. Not really anything to write home about. Not many people mention this, but India’s pace bowling unit today owes its origins to Srinath for mentoring the likes of Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra and others. As well as Captains like Saurav Ganguly who understood Srinath’s pace bowling skills and used him as a potent weapon, not just as someone who’ll slam the ball to take its shine off…. Srinath with his pace would have been a vastly different bowler had in played in today’s times.

      Yes, it is said he used to bowl 150 kmph+ regularly. Fastest is suspected to be 156-157 back in those days, even before Lee & Akhtar era. Sreenath was so far ahead of any other fast bowler for 20-30 years.

    • @ragavvijayadev8900
      @ragavvijayadev8900 Před rokem +14

      @@kanakTheGold In the 1999 WC, Srinath had clocked 156.7 Kmph in a match against Zimbabwe(which we lost). However it was quickly overshadowed due to India's chances of qualifying for the super sixes stage and moreover the speed guns in England were not calibrated as per ICC standards as per a few reports, so this delivery remained unofficially India's fastest delivery bowled. Javagal Srinath was spotted and picked in the 1989 tour to England and since then, he has been the next big thing in the post Kapil Dev era of fast bowling. A veteran of 4 WCs 92' 96' 99' and 2003, he was still fit to play the next WC and could have bowed out in 2007, but with emergence of Irfan Pathan,Aashish Nehra,Laxmi Shukla it was always a good decision to retire the old war horse. New spearhead Ajit Agarkar and Zaheer Khan were doing splendidly well and Srinath himself said in his final interview that the future of Indian fast bowling is in safe hands. Unfortunately after a spectacular 2003 WC bowling effort, the final v/s Aussies totally decimated Srinath's last hurray and left me teary eyed. The old war horse had left ODI after giving his all. A unselfish bowler who bowled his heart out in every match. The following tour to Oz starting with the tests meant that Srinath would only be considered as a test bowler, but after the announcement of the series, Srinath bid adieu to test cricket saying its all over and his body(shoulder) was not the same after the rotator cuff surgery and the long spells in test matches were too demanding and was the right time for him to hang his boots. J Srinath will remain forever as the only cricketer who never let his exhaustion come in the way of delivering the goods for the team. A 100% effort cricketer.

    • @ragavvijayadev8900
      @ragavvijayadev8900 Před rokem +1

      Yes, his pinch hitting is often forgotten. It was post 96' WC when Srinath was used as a pinch hitter along with Nayan Mongia at times at 1 drop to give flying starts. Ajit Agarkar later made that spot his own but not for a long while. Irfan Pathan and Zak provided useful lower order runs and with emergence of Sehwag and Yuvi who gave good starts and stable muscle in middle order, pinch hitter concept died.

    He never had a proper partner at the other end. And that severely affected his bowling. He couldn’t develop his armour of deliveries fully bcos he was highly restricted by the lack of a good fast bowler at the other end. That meant he had to perform multiple roles all by himself which generally meant he couldn’t target wickets and had to restrict the run flow . Very unlucky bowler. Also had a shoulder injury that meant he had to remodel his action and come back. Most ppl wrote him off but he he came
    back with his new action. But this did affect his bowling which is why he never became the bowler he promised to be in the 92 World Cup. The original Srinath was probably the best bowler of the time and that included Akram , Younis , Donald and a whole lot of others. I blame our cricket admin at the time cos they never encouraged fast bowlers properly and mismanaged most of them.

      Indian cricket had a lot of politics in the 80's and 90's. With a country of close to if not over a billion at that time, they had a lot of quick bolowers. However, we never got to see them due to the politics.
      Think of it this way, if a country like Pakistan could consistently produce top quality fast bowlers, what was stopping India which had a bigger population
      I agree that Srinath was the only genuine fast blower and very underrated. He kept the bolowing attack together just like Tendulkar kept the batting attack together

      Not exactly correct, he was an attacking bowler, rarely saw him bowling defensively. Actually his stock delivery was the one that came in sharply to the right hander, he rarely got one leaving the right handers. He was somewhat lacking in variety, that along with the injuries hampered him the most, though he was one bowler who always gave it all.

    Most under appreciated player - Javagal Srinath. To bowl on those dusty tracks when India played 3 spinners all through his prime and hardly any backup bowler to talk about (Venky Prasad too slow for any impact) - hats off Sri. I am always thinking what he could have done in a 4 pronged pace attack at this time/age for India when bowlers are “load managed” (Bumrah, Shami, Ishant, Umesh Yadav and others). People talk about Akhtar taking all the limelight but Pak had splendid attack with at least 3-4 other fast bowlers as back ups. Sri was fast (and more hit the deck rather unlike Akhtar who was fast through the air).. and imagine those dusty tracks where he bowled all those long long spells. Was amazing to see him evolve his reverse swing skills later in the career. He is among the only few who haven’t tried to seek the limelight/money after retirement when everyone else has gone down the coach/mentor of an IPL side path. Dignified and amazing player.
