Eternal Traveller - Ambient Performance (GR-1)

- Finally a track using only the Tasty Chips GR-1, with some very subtle delay and verb on the DAW track. This is probably the first and last track I'll make on the GR-1 due to frustrations of this machine. The unintuitive, convoluted, clumsy workflow, file structure and weird hierarchy of the programs on this thing make it not very fun to use and I feel like I'm fighting with it most of the time instead of enjoying the process. Not to mention the glitches, a few which are on the audio here during recording even though there was still CPU to spare. On the positive side, it's the best sounding granular I've used.
Recorded direct to Bitwig Studio
Video shot on a Sony A6400 + 16mm 1.4f lens. Editing and colour grading done in Da Vinci Resolve.

Wow, after only 16 hours since I uploaded this video, it got 7 downvotes already? That's more downvotes than videos I've had up for over a week! Maybe it's some butthurt GR-1 owners. Usually the anti-AI police are on my case, but I haven't used AI in this video!
What's going on with anti-AI police? Does CZcams do anything special for AI-generated videos?
@@midiscripts When I mean anti-AI police, I mean the AI complainers that are out in force lately
Wow, that was a magnificent soundscape journey! Thank you
Question: what is the “downvotes” you mentioned?
@@Spaceman-jo5mz Thanks. Thumbs Down'/Downvote/dislike button as opposed to clicking the Like
@@stateazure oh, I wouldn’t give that a second thought my friend.
The soundscapes you create and share with us are ALWAYS magnificent!
Don’t worry about the haters.
I know I speak for the masses - when I say your soundscapes are the best….your listeners always know we are going on a transcending off world journey every time you share something new…
Cheers
This feels like a work of art that one listens to. It transcends any normal feelings one gets from music, it is an immersive journey.
This is outstanding ambient right here. Azure says this is the last time he'll use the GR-1. I don't know how much of the soundscape we are hearing is a result of the GR-1 specifically, but I have to say this sounds fantastic.
State Azure, still giving gifts ! Right on !
Incredible music, unearthly color reproduction and atmosphere..... I admire what you do with sound.
Wow! Another amazing performance! I am always so excited to see my notification pop up showing you released a new track! Your music always evokes such expression and takes me on a journey. Most times, I just close my eyes and escape the day with your music. Thank you for always creating genuine performances! You are amazing my friend! 💙❤🔥😃 P.S. LOVE the instrument swell at 5:00 !!!
Thanks so much, Amy!
Thank you for always taking me on a journey through space and time. Always brightens up my workday.
Sounds very nice. Happy Holidays!
Tasty Black 🥶❤🔥 I Love it...
10 minutes seems to go by in one breath with your music. Beautiful pads! Great track as usual.
Amazing SA, anything in your more than capable hands comes out sounding incredible. You set the bar for all of us and most of us will only ever dream of being so capable....... Nice one.
Thanks IP. This one was quite a struggle!
Absolutely awesome soundscapes
Your work is seriously incredible, thanks for sharing your musics with us 💙
I was attracted to the GR-1 but reading your comments about it makes it less desirable.
Too bad, it sounds really beautiful.
Cheers from SF! Hope you're having a good holiday season.
I love this song so much!
I loved the puff at @9:41... a perfect end to a perfect piece of music. 👍🏼
Fantastic! And that release of "The Thing" cover on Bandcamp, oooooo, nice! It's clear you and i like the same films from the 80's!👍👍
The six legged dog was a bonus from AI and the thing. 😉
Happy new year💕🤏 and I stay in your channel 🦋🥂🦋
Keep up your work in new year 🎼🎵 🎶 🖤
Big boys don't cry, big boys don't cry. 😄 Love it.
the cat dreaming in the background makes it perfect
Superb ambient performance 🌠🎵💫🤙
Soothing focus
Magnificent
Fantastic music !
Thank you!
Oooo lovely
That's strange, i found the GR-1 very straight foward and usable without reading the manual.
Sweet!
Here before 100k!
Edit: just
как господь лепил человека из глины, так ты создаёшь человека из звуков - небесно!!!
lovely little sketch man
not good that it's glitching though, surprisingly often too if my ears aren't deceiving me
At least several times during this jam, unfortunately.
Fantastic soundscape. Also sad to hear you had a lot of problems with this thing. Especially considering my GR-1 is being shipped to me! Are the bugs and the lag issues avoidable? Or were they a constant issue? I just want to get some heads up on what I'm in for.
❤
i‘d rather recommend to do (at least) one more thing 😉 it‘s simply terrific
...thx !... 🍻🥳🎄
I imagine I'm hearing tiny microbots cleaning the hull of a giant space liner as it cruises through the cosmos.
Sounding gorgeous, pity to hear about the technical issues of the synth...
No idea if you've ever done a 10cc version of I'm Not In Love, but you should definitely try it.
More videos with thia synth i wanna buy and you are the máster
👍🏼👍🏼😎
Beautiful Piece, and that is quite the comment. Worst and Best in the same item. So what in your vast experience would you prefer using for granular explorations? You have done a few🙂
I don't really have specific recommendations, in software there are just so many options. I don't know of many hardware alternatives either, except for eurorack modules like Morphagene, Nebulae and Arbhar
Lemondrop might be worth a look
@@Oblique331 Underpowered, and too yellow )
I tried lemon drop also. Underwhelming. Don’t mind the yellow. Granular processing has been my main interest for almost 30 years. From beta versions of Reaktor to Crusher X and the plethora since then. I have morphogene, beads, clouds , mood, microcosm, etc. just wondering if Arbhar and Nebulae are worth it. What do they bring new to the table?
@@rjschrei Nebulae is a bit more standard kind of granular manipulation..at least compared to say Morphagene/Arbhar and Beads/Clouds (never liked Clouds much for it's extremely limited/lo-fi almost take on granular), where pitch and speed are very much separately controlled, and more control over panning/grain length etc. None of these granular devices are very satisfying for me personally, and I don't really consider Microcosm granular at all even if it can 'kind of' mimic the sound. Nebulae at least does it properly and gives you access to most granular features you would find in software, only without multi-layers/multitimbral operation. Granular by nature is unfortunately very CPU hungry with a decent amount of grains and/or grain length so I think hardware is always going to fall short for a while yet.
this amazing sounds only with this small setup.. master SA will teach you how 😉
Oh yeah, granular synth, finally. I had no idea Tasty Chips came in Black colour. The main thing I resent is that for this amount of cash they may as well have made it with a touchscreen, which would have speeded up the workflow and made it far more intuitive. The way Kodamo did it with their "Essence FM", completely doing away with the "menu diving" aspect. I'm gravitating towards "Lemon Drop" these days for granular, but I'd still find the tiny form factor a bit difficult to get used to. Have you ever used it I wonder?
Touch screen would be a nightmare on this and raised the price considerably I imagine. I say nightmare, because even with this performance I was only using 3 out of the 4 max layers in multitimbral mode, around 70-80% CPU performance, and I was getting several audio glitches, can you imagine how slow and unresponsive the touchscreen would be at this point? I'm even wondering just how much of the internal performance goes to running the big screen as it is, and how much of that is taken away from the audio performance. Lemon Drop is even more underpowered I expect, and it can only handle a total of 128 grains, i'd just rather use software or a granular eurorack module I think. I'm sure it'll be okay for some, but it's not good for how I want to use them with 3-4 layers of granular at a time.
@@stateazure I find software isn't the best for portability purposes. I bring a laptop with me, and when it's just for an Ambient jam, busking or live performance, - I use something like Reaktor 5 "Travelizer" granular sampler as one of a number of VSTs through Ableton, and SL MK III as a controller to control all of the VST including granular. But when I DJ - I typically use it to run a DJ Prodecks so finding a good supplemental granular synthesis hardware would still be nice. Why is it so underpowered? I'd think that for that kind of price they'd at least put a decent CPU in it. Are there any hardware grainstate synthesis capable tools you'd recommend?
I'm a true novice. I'm a filmmaker primarily, writer and director, but I've always been interested in composing music. I bought the Minilogue XD and I have Propellerheads Reason (I know, not the most common DAW), but I'm trying to create pads and sounds like this track, these ethereal sounds for ambience, but I can't seem to get there. It might be that the Minilogue XD is limited in this, even if I use plugins for reverb and delay.
I would really like to know a breakdown on how to get these ambience sounds. It's by far the best sounding ambience pads I've found so far.
The Minilogue XD just isn't going to cut it for these types of atmospheric textures. I had an XD for a short while, but sent it back to the shop due to how basic/limited it was for sound design, but so are most analog synths in my opinion and it's one of the weaknesses of analog synths as you're very limited to sound design because you're always stuck with the same basic building blocks (basic waveforms). Reason on the other hand should be very capable of producing these kinds of sounds with layering, maybe a combination of textures, samples etc and analog. SpaceWave - Cosmic Relaxation here on CZcams produces some very beautiful ambient, and I believe he primarily uses Reason. Even if you switch your DAW it won't really help, you'll probably need to invest in different hardware or software. A cheap hardware solution for this kind of ambient would be the Korg Wavestate, I have a video where I created a full album of 11-12 tracks during a live stream and I think it really showed how powerful that little synth is, but it's NOT easy to program, you'll have to dedicate quite a bit of time to learning it. For the software side, I would highly recommend Spectrasonics Omnisphere, as that would be pretty much the only soft synth you would ever need for this type of music (and more..).
Thanks so much for the answer! I’ll start experimenting more with Reason and plug-ins. The monologue XD is a good starter synth for me though, professional enough but very easy to grasp the basics of synth sound design. I was eyeing the Polybrute, but I think the Minilogue XD will fit that need in what basic little I do and I’ll focus more on what you mentioned to expand my work, thanks again! And your music is wonderful, part of my “screenwriting playlists” 👌 Keep up the great work!
