It's because north americans in general don't consider indians as asians. They only consider east asians as asians. As a south asian who grew up in north america, even I think of east asians when I hear the word "asian" and it sucks because even though we're from the same continent it feels like we're made to feel lesser in a way since majority of south asians have a tanned skin and well, majority of east asians don't. There was a time when I was on Japanese based church in Lisbon and we learned to be respectful of things. . For example: On Ikebana, we put a little towel undet thd scissors so that we don't disturb the gatbage worker, we were taught that when we pay for something , the bill or coin should be given with its face up… things like that
