US Man Still Detained After Mistakenly Taking Bullets to Turks and Caicos

- Turks and Caicos is turning into a prison for two Americans. Ryan Watson and Bryan Hagerich never knew each other. However, they were both arrested in separate cases at the airport as they were returning home from their family vacations. Both men had forgotten they had ammunition in their carry-on luggage. Under Turks and Caicos law, a passenger trying to board a plane with a gun or ammunition is subject to a mandatory 12 years in jail. Inside Edition’s Les Trent has more.
Something that surprises me is that Americans “forget” they have ammunition/bullets in their luggage like if it was a cookie in a lunch bag.
It's honestly hilarious
1 of them isn’t even American..
I would never forget a cookie in a lunch bag.
I understand the deer hunting situation. I always used the same carry on bag for trips and would store my shotgun shells in the small pouch. However, definitely check that before trying to board a flight out of the country
@Detective_shadow 0:05 says "these 2 Americans"
American Privileges Don't exist in Other Countries.
Maybe watch the video first. He didn't intentionally bring the ammunition in thinking that it was legal, he was ignorant as to where it was. Yes it doesn't excuse his behavior, but sentencing a father to 12 years in prison for a harmless mistake seems like overkill.
@@ludicrousmodel3173don’t care their ignorance is no defense!
He's European, not American.
That's like calling him Asian if he lived in Japan.
No such thing as a white American.

You mean to tell me, they packed their bags, didn’t notice the bullets. Got through American TSA, didn’t notice the bullets. Got to their destination in Turks and Caicos and assumingely unpacked, STILL didn’t notice and is only when they leaving the island is when they get caught. Smh
Yes 😂👍
Now imagine if he was smuggling arms in.😂
Ammunition is legal in us, just can’t have the firearm
Yes the privilege of them
Checked bag. So it’s plausible they were never detected
Remember, American rights doesn't apply to everywhere outside the United States of America. It's unfortunate that this happened to them but people have to be careful and know the laws of the country they're visiting.

Even in USA

Its actually not illegal to have ammunition in your check bag in US. Had to google it myself because I thought the same thing
I guess baggage checkin they dont do in depth screenings
The only person at fault is the person who packed an carried the bag!
It sucks that he made a mistake, but you can’t expect the law to bend for you. It’s in place for a reason. Why would you not check what you have in your bag before going on this trip? I guess my father and the army brain washed me to always check that a be 9999% sure you’re all good
Is this the reason the law was put in place?
And even then...check again lol
It's easy to miss a box of ammo. He was on his way home when it was discovered.
This should have been a 2 minute interview and a "travel safe" farewell message. It should not be a silly international kerfuffle with a minor British colony.
@@moonshoes11 yes to prevent smuggling in arms/ammunition. So say they let him go and now that gives criminals a way to get out of jail card since it sets a precedence. Because he’s negligent and irresponsible.
@@kevin6293it's a hunting bag 🙄🤦♂️
How do you not? It's easy when you're always carrying wherever you go in the US, making it so all your bags have stuff like that in them. Happened to me many times, although I've never left the US without checking my bag thoroughly, but i could easily see how it could happen. It's really not a big deal since the ammo can't hurt anyone on it's own, the fact they're taking him away from his family for so long over a harmless crime is what actually seems far-fetched.
@@thekamotodragon the gun can’t really hurt anyone on its own either, but losing track of your guns is still undeniably irresponsible.
@@kevin6293 it is irresponsible, but there's a difference between irresponsible and criminal and his actions hurt no one. I feel this shouldn't be a criminal matter, let alone one he receives 12 years for, some killers in the US receive less time.
They didnt owns their mistake. Having ammunition in a random bag is careless.
They have kids but can't be bothered to keep track of the ammunition in their house. "Oh it's God's will" is what they'll say when the inevitable happens. Anything to dodge responsibility.
Big time irresponsible
Mom is worried hubby may be in prison for up to 12 years leaving their kids without a father, but isn't bothered that there's stray ammunition just lying around the house they can't keep track of.
😂😂😂 thats his dumb mistake you clean your suit case before you travel common sense.

Americans saying they will boycott and stay home. The world is thanking you
For some reasons, I don’t feel sorry for those two men at all.
How could you be that reckless and irresponsible, especially going to a foreign land?
that's also on a do not travel list by the state department😂
i'd definitely feel bad for them if they actually have to serve out 12 f*ing years for that...obviously knowing and following the laws is one thing, but to sunddenly be on a 12 year prison sentence just because you forgot to take some ammunition out before getting to the airport, if it wasn't illegal to posses it whilst vacationing there, is too insane...and i'm not even pro-guns or anything
such simple a mistake with no additional context or history, can't possibly have such a drastic sentence
Of course they're still detained. They broke the law. Justice must be served.
Deer hunting ammunition…
They broke a law. Give them a fine or something. Punishment isn't fitting the crime
@chynabarbieeeeee Well take your law degree and do get them if they didn't do anything.
@jenniferhennessy28 I do agree with that, the punishment is way more than it should be.
Justice for what? They didn't intend harm, and they weren't a danger. If you call sentencing a father of young kids to 12 years in prison in a foreign country for a harmless mistake "justice", then I sure hope that you'll never ever be a judge, juror, or a prosecutor.
It sucks, it’s a huge sentence. But who seriously doesn’t check their bag before a flight?
How do bullets get in your luggage by accident? If that's to happpen to you, you should not even be allowed to hold a gun.
Bro didnt watch the full video💀
He did. Again, why tf did he have loose ammunition in a luggage case? It should have been stored securely in a gun box or ammunition case. Not just thrown haphazardly into luggage. Especially if he has kids. He's an irresponsible gun owner who recklessly ignores the laws of the places he travels to and now he's going to pay the consequence of carelessness.
He's not in the US and the law is the law.

How did they get pass the airport ???
Only in America could someone leave on an international flight with bullets not get flagged. I don’t know any other country where you could board an international flight with bullets. The TSA flagged my camera bag for a small eyeglasses screwdriver a couple months back.

This is the height of irresponsible gun ownership. You absolutely should know at all times if you have a gun or ammo in your luggage. You also should never just leave either in any bag you use for travel.
The islands should know a mistake from the real thing
This why you always read the laws about other countries before visiting them.
You would have to read a library full of books every time you travel to a foreign country. In the USA, you should contact the State Department or Ministry of Foreign Affairs about foreign travel laws for the country you want to travel to. I had a friend who travelled to Vietnam and got in a lot of trouble for soft-core pornography on his cellphone. A couple of days in jail and about $1,000 in fines made him learn his lesson.
It's important to understand once you leave America, the laws change. Hope they get to go to their families.
