5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Buying an Infiniti G35

- As you all very well know the Infiniti G35 is by far my favorite car. Regardless here are five things about the Infiniti G35 that I wish I had known prior to buying one.
1.Crankshaft positioning sensors are not a big deal. If you talk to anyone about the G35 than you will hear one of two things. Either it burns oil, or that the crank positioning sensors are going to fail on you. I'll address the oil burn later, but to start with, the crankshaft positioning sensors are no more of an issue on this platform than any other platform. In fact the Nissan 350z uses the same VQ35 engine and you never hear of it having crankshaft positioning problems.
2. The VQ35HR engine does not have any issues with oil consumption. Earlier models of the G35 were said to burn through oil at an astonishing rate, and this is often cited as one of the main weaknesses of the engine, however this appears to have been fixed and does not apply to the later model years.
3. No one will understand that the car is a rebadged Nissan Skyline. Like most car enthusiasts I love the Nissan Skyline. Unlike most car enthusiasts I actually own one. The G35 is a model of Nissan Skyline that was sold in North America as an Infiniti. Do not try explaining this to people because they will not understand anyway. The fact is that the G37 and Q50 are also called Nissan Skylines in Japan.
4. The parts from the 2009 Infiniti G37 are directly compatible. I wish I had known this sooner because it would definitely have saved me some headache when searching for parts.
5. Ever riced out Honda Civic and Ford Mustang will pull up next to you while you are driving and bounce off of their rev limiter trying to race you. In fact every ricer regardless of what they drive will pull up alongside you and feel the need to redline their engine for no apparent reason.

I bought an all black G37S 6MT Sedan last week and I didn’t realize the interior headliner was tan/beige instead of black. I noticed it while driving home from the previous owner’s house and now I can’t unsee it. I still love it anyway lol.
I bought the same car this past weekend!
Congrats on the car!! Hope your still loving it. You should make a video of what it takes to switch out the headliner that would be pretty cool. I'm sure people would love to watch that too because headliners tend to get beat up after a while. Really freshens the interior up.

Lol wtf "it doesnt burn oil" not only does it burn oil (because its a high revolution engine) but worse the 07' 08' were made with cheap paper gaskets that fail and leak engine oil. Thanks for the great video.
I have a 2008 G35 Sedan, Base model. Love the Car. Mine does burn a light amount of oil, I don't have to top it off as long as I get my oil changed every 5k Miles. My 2 complaints which are minor is the lights on the gauge cluster, digital clock and the O2 Sensor due to cat issues.
End up fixing the cat problem?
One of my major complaints is that there is no headlight indicator. Not sure if it's a problem with my car or not (08 G35). Another smaller complaint is the dash lights fading and there is no digital clock in the car (i'm spoiled with digital clocks)
@@angelescobar8989 gave up on it for the time being. About to go travel the world for a couple of months. When I get back from that just going to put a whole new exhaust system on it. Previously replaced one of the cats and the other o2 sensor went meaning it's the other car now.

Yeah our first G was an 08 G35x and after that we needed another vehicle so I was shopping for an 09 g37 but found another 08 G35 sport 6mt for $10,000 with 90,000miles, unmolested well taken care of black with black leather interior. Had to jump on it. Any way the value of it is going up while our other one is depreciati g. The 6mt is so hard to find in the HR/VHR sedans. Imo it's perfect combo. I love our awd but with the 6mt and vlsd ( even though it only works as a lsd untill the fluid gets to hot and acts like an open dif) makes it a totally different experience. Only complaint is the clutch is by far the most numb feeling clutch iv ever driven. It will make you feel like you don't wtf your doing. Hard to drive smoothly in town. Use to drive a dump truck that was easier to drive smooth. Now for racing its alright.
I already bought new z1 clutch and lightweight flywheel with z speed heavy duty CSC just need to install it. Heard it makes a big difference with clutch feel even with the lightweight flywheel. Also have ISR lth, invidia q300 cbe, z1 cai waiting to go on as well. Just need to get the uprev software/cable and IL be ready to put it all on.
Took me awhile to find the spec I have, and it’s the only one I wanted. Pewter, manual, black leather sedan. Had to drive over an hour one way to pick it up. Worth it though, such a fun daily.
@@calebwright2849 it’s the dual mass flywheel and the clutch pedal. Swap it for the solid flywheel and an RJM clutch pedal and it’s a completely different car.
Swapping the auto to manual is plug and play.
A lot of the issues of the G35 were refined and massaged out by the 4th gen (07-13 year models)

I have a question so like exterior parts for a g37 sedan are the same for a 2007 g35 sedan and like performance parts too?
Sorry I'm so late to reply. The 2009 model G37 will have compatible parts to the 07-08 G35. The later G37's will mostly be compatible but after 2009 they aren't exactly the same. They are super similar but have very slight differences especially on the front bumper and headlights.

@@jrdaboy2434 No, they pretty good cars beside the gallery gaskets.
But not all this cars suffer from this issue.
And also the gas consumption.
I got 17 miles city 23 highway and like 20 combined.
I have a code 0311 saying right wheel speed sensor bad. Car is jerky intermittently and transmission seems confused about which gear to catch. Do you know if those are symptoms of wheel speed sensor.
wheel speed sensors are used for traction control, ABS, and a lot of other systems that the engine and trans monitor so yes it very well could be and you should get them checked.

Get a G37
Used motors are 1,500. Probably your cheapest option.
Idk but the crankshaft positioning sensor on my VQ40 took about 15 minutes and 50$
Bruh everything you said is true i own g35 and g37 and none of them have or had consumer oil IF YOUR CAR IS CONSUMING OIL ITS CUZ U DID NOT TAKE CARE OF IT OR IT NEED MAINTENANCE 🤦🏻♂️
I have an 08 g35 had it for 50k miles from 50-100k, oil changes every 5k miles and it's always full when I go to change it
So I have an 06 get coupe 6mt which comes with the vq35 de revup engine it's a great enthusiast car however if you have the money buy an 07 or higher so you can get the hr motor which is a much better and more reliable car. The revup vehicle specifically has an issue with the rings that causes oil consumption. Definitely reccomend a g35 the market is insane right now
Just gotta top up the oil it’s not hard

hey important question you say all parts are compatible does that mean the headlights from 09 g37 will fit on the 07 g35 sedan? thanks
No you’ll have to change fenders and bumpers along with headlights
So which year g37 do you recommend ? I’m looking for a daily driver . Reliable and fuel efficient.
You really can't go wrong either way. I hear the 37 is a tad bit more reliable just because they worked out some of the quirks that the 35 had
You should look for a 2012 or 2013 G37 if you can find a good one. Nissan fixed a few issues from the 08-11 models. If you can afford it, you should look for a 2014-2015 Q60.
Im a teen and am wondering how much of a burden the 2 door 5 seats are compared to a regular sedan… obviously i am never going to be in the back, but for friends and family
It’s annoying getting out of your side to let your friend in
Im almost 17 nd want an 07 or newer G, would this be a good first car? And would it be too fast for me?
Me too!! That’s what i’m thinking, or a g37s coupe!!
When I was 17 I got my 07 g35x from my dad's close friend. It was very well taken care of, but the first thing I had to do was replace the climate control module and that got rid of the check engine light. Also another thing to keep in mind, the 07 and newer Gs are pretty advanced, for example, it has dual throttle body and dual fuel pumps, and I suppose a neglected G could cause you a lot of problems. Overall the car is not hard to work on but please make sure you properly inspect the car before buying one, as for speed and power, the car has over 300 hp and for a sedan like this that's a lot quicker than most cars on the street, so be careful. Since this is your first car, don't be tempted to go fast, it is very easy to do so in this car. Obviously, i'm not saying you can't have fun, but don't make it a habit because running into the cops can have a serious effect on your driving record and insurance. That being said, having a quick car can get you out of some sticky situations, and the handling of the G is excellent, so if you're careful and not a retarded driver you'll be fine. If i had to complain about one thing, the gas mileage is pretty bad, and make sure you are ONLY using premium gas and change oil every 3k miles.
I would say that it is a lot of upkeep but as long as your willing to put in the wrench time than the G35 is a great car. Definitely quick. As far as being too fast I would say the with the electronic traction control it is fairly stable as long as you dont turn it off. When the traction control is off it can get a little hairy.
@@gallonofpatrick Definitely a good choice. Maybe not as much maintenance as an STI but it will still be a hand full. You'll become very comfortable working in the engine bay within the first year of owning it.
So which model do you think is the best to get and easiest to take care of?

Im thinking about getting my girl a G35 2008 with 150k miles. To your knowledge are the engines and trans solid ( do they last )
The engines are very solid the transmissions are not the best but not the worst, the issues with them start around 200k usually and it can cost a lot to fix and maintenance, still good cars tho just wouldn’t suggest buying one with 200k and shouldn’t pay more than 5-7K for any with 150 or more, depending on mods and condition
@@Ahpocalypse thank you for your input, fyi its in good condition, very clean and very minor little scratches scratches here and there. Its a very nice looking car.
@@hiltonsaona7862 they’re pretty reliable cars usually good condition just check for oil leaks, make sure the gas gauge works and get a full service done if u buy on the transmission, engine, timing chain ect

I have a 2008 g35 with 150k miles and it got no oil consumption and a fx35 with 200k and no problems
Ya they really do make good stuff honestly. Those fx35's are pretty cool.
How does the FX handle compared to the G35? I hear they share the same dna also with the 350z. But driving dynamics how do they compare?
@@Nestle245 they should be the same. i think the fx weighs a bit more but should be similar. I think they are close to the same length and width too
How reliable are g35s or g37s compared to Hondas/Toyota’s? Can they last 300k miles? At least 200k? I would get a Honda but I really like the more luxury looking interiors of the Infiniti’s and the extra hp acceleration and top speed. It reminds me of a bmw but for cheaper parts and repairs and more reliability. I find the older Infiniti cars to be a happy medium between luxury and price for me. For under $15k I can get a relatively low mileage 2013 Infiniti G37 that looks a lot nicer than a Honda civic or accord, and is a lot faster! Just concerned over reliability. How reliable are they really?
They aren’t as reliable as Toyota or Honda. 300k on a g35/37 may be possible but not without fixing a lot of things. I seem with blown automatic transmission often and some with blown motors because the oil consumption can be high, you have to stay on top of the oil check and top it off often in between oil changes. The oil consumption seems to be really inconsistent between all the g35/37 some can burn a lot of oil while others don’t even burn a drop.
@@dohc1974 is a g35/g37 worth it in the end? I wouldn’t buy a used bmw or Mercedes unless I was rich or made 6 figures a year but are the Infiniti car’s not too expensive to keep running compared to German luxury cars? So far I’m aware parts are cheaper and average maintenance costs are affordable but no one is talking about big repairs or long term ownership costs. I want to go fast without spending 50k over 5 years.
@@TwinSquidzLLC I think you’re still better off with a g35/37 than a German car in terms of reliability, cost of repairs and how often things break. The key is to find a well taken care of g35/37 then stay on top of checking the oil dipstick and topping the oil off in between oil changes if needed, don’t run the motor low on oil or trans. If manual trans than change the oil every 30k miles, if auto trans then make sure the oil is black, if it’s black that means it’s over do and at that point your better off not changing the oil until the tranny blows, also don’t flush trans oil because it will clog all the computers passages and cause the tranny to fail quickly. Just remember, black trans fluid means dont ever change it because it’s too late now, but if the fluid is still red or pink then change it every 30k miles.
@@TwinSquidzLLC auto correct changed my word and made me sound like I’m giving bad advice lol. Black oil in a auto trans is BAD not good, if it’s black that means it’s over do and if changing it, you will most likely destroy the tranny quicker.
@@dohc1974 wow you know your stuff about cars! Thanks for the advice much appreciated! How would you know a g35/37 is well taken care of? What would you specifically check on a g35/g37 besides a typical car inspection? Besides the oil Are there any hidden signs in these cars?
