      I sure hope not, Milwaukee isn't dumb there's a very good reason the wrench and driver are the way they are. The hammer im the impact is more skookum and will handle abuse for longer. Generally the driver isn't stalled out impacting as its driving screws and the anvil has some forward inertia. The impact wrench will spend more times stalled impacting so it needs to have better durability

    Upgraded from an older 18v kit. czcams.com/users/postUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv I independently chose the drill and impact tool, before I came across the kit.I like the 3 speed impact gun. It seems more powerful than my older one, and it can be set to be really gentle. The drill is more appropriately sized for my use. I used to have a hammer drill, but I did not like that it was so big and it was not a great hammer drill. I rather have a smaller drill like this, and then get a corded hammer drill for the odd case I need that.

      Definitely interesting.

    • @LordOfSilense
      @LordOfSilense Před 3 lety +28

      Something not mentioned here is that impact drivers impact both forward and rotationally, while impact wrenches only impact rotationally. If the actual striking mechanism isn't changed, then using an impact driver with a 1/2" anvil swap is going to absolutely destroy the detent pin spring in the anvil, the detent pin hole in the sockets, or the hog nose ring over time just by constantly popping it in and out of alignment as the tool is being used. Impact driver's have that slop in the 1/4" hex to allow for that forward and back movement, sockets don't.
      For Milwaukee to shove an anvil on the impact driver, they'd have to create specialty sockets that allow for forward/back slop (maybe by having an extended detent pin groove?) otherwise warranty is going to kill them.

    • @tadasstrikauskas1205
      @tadasstrikauskas1205 Před 3 lety +6

      Looks like many small punches are better than one big.
      It's logical:
      When wrench punches the nut, slower speed (bigger intervals) creates a pressure gap to the nut, so the nut rebounds and wrench starts from almost the same pressure spot.
      Driver is faster so removes such impact gaps and the pressure to the nut is more constant.
      What about air pressure wrenches? Aren't they also like 7000 IPM?
      Would be interesting to see with slow motion camera.

    • @btrswt35
      @btrswt35 Před 3 lety +6

      @@LordOfSilense interesting point. I would wonder if it would wear the sockets out prematurely or if the wear would be cumulative and last until the useful life of the socket is used up. I don't know if the forward and backward movement is enough to cause excessive wear or not.
      Sounds like we need someone to do some long term testing.

      Cheesy? Wtf are you on about. Quarter inch hex impact drivers have changed the game for most trades. They are for driving screws.
      If the mod works for you, great. But as a builder I couldn't live without that "cheesy" tool. All you have done is convert it into a wrench. That's great, but now it sucks at driving screws, that's why I have two impact drivers that get run hard every day, and an impact wrench I only bring out to drive bolts into concrete, a job all my mates use impact drivers for.

    @rickrussell Před 3 lety +8

    I think you answered the fundamental question with the failure of the 1/4" adapter -- the reason they put more beans into the impact driver is speed, not torque. They figure it will never be used for 200+ ft/lbs applications but once in a blue moon, so they don't have to design the internals to take that much punishment.
    I bet if you drove it to max torque a few hundred times, the impact driver would fail long before the impact wrench, which is designed for repeated high torque applications.

      Be pretty interesting to watch, but a WHOLE different test, and couldn’t be put on the point charts that are currently used- since there would be no common factor- such as elapsed time (5,10, or 15 sec in these cases), since each impact separately could potentially run infinitely (or a different number of seconds each).
      It would seriously be nothing more than a plot of how high you could make it go!

    So I think I might know the reason they don’t build this. I was watching an interview with an engineer for chainsaws. The discussion was “why do you limit the power of these saws?” Knowing that with modification these saws can put out wild horsepower and way outperform stock. The engineer essentially said he can make a saw that would beat 2 classes above it, but it will only run for maybe 15-20 hours, where as we can provide steady working saws at different levels that will run for hundreds of hours.
    So I feel that they don’t do this in order to provide longer lasting tools at various levels. That said, saws are a 2 cycle combustion engine which has a much more demanding method of making power.

    Makes me wonder about the long term viability. The anvil from an impact wrench has a higher mass for inertia so the motor doesn’t have to spin as fast. Torque over speed. Whereas the driver is using speed and a lower mass anvil to achieve the torque. So it makes me wonder if the MCT motor will burn out faster than the wrench.

    The first gen, brushed, Milwaukee range had an m12 2462, 1/4 impact driver and a 2463 3/8 impact wrench. Looking at the parts breakdown of both the only difference is the anvil. There was 200 inch pounds spec difference (3/8 wrench being higher).
    I know these are old news but it looks like Milwaukee has already thought of this some time ago. Don't know why they discontinued this practice.

  • @Falcrist
    @Falcrist Před 2 lety +1

    Just remember: there are other considerations here. It's not just torque, but torque + cost + usability + durability. If it wins in torque and usability but loses in cost and/or durability, it might be an overall loser for Milwaukee.

    another thing to think about is the socket yes the same socket was used but the impact driver hits faster and i bet the hammer is also larger which would add up to more force early on then flatten out

  • @ShadowtheRotarygod
    @ShadowtheRotarygod Před 2 lety

    I'm wondering if maybe the reason the driver offers more IPM is a lighter weight hammer assembly. Then my only concern would be long term longevity. If it tears itself apart internally in half the time of the wrench, that could be why milwaukee didn't go that route. I have no idea, this is just speculation without seeing all the parts side by side. Still I'd love to build one for those annoyingly tight spaces.

    I considered doing this myself but opted against it for 2 reason. 1st was obviously warranty. the 2nd thing that made me not do it was the internals. The impact driver is super powerful, but it only uses a 2 pinion ring gear vs the wrench's 3 pinion. I was worried over long term abuse it would not hold up.
