  • As a beginner in the hobby I try to build my first steam engine. This kit was brought from Stuart Models and is the simplest steam engine they sell in kit form at the time of purchase. Part 8 of 9 in the series.

    Hello T&B,
The engine looks great, you must be pleased with it... I was thinking that maybe you could have made a paper/cardboard template for the cylinder cover to get the size spot on... I like this little engine and might get myself one.
    Take care.

I like that idea. I have another kit to build and will be trying the lagging template idea for sure. It's a fun engine to build especially because the kit is a reasonable price, and all parts are available as spares which really takes the pressure off. Would be excited to see how you tackle the build if you do decide to invest.

I’m jealous of the mill and lathe could I ask what models they are? I am building a 3 traction engine and must invest in a good setup. Thanks for uploading vids 👌

They are both brought in the UK from a company called Warco. The milling machine is a WM18 and I got them to upgrade it to have a three axis DRO which is worth doing. The lathe is a 280v and I also got the optional stands and chip trays. These were at the top of the weight range that I could move through the access that I had to my workshop. You get what you pay for and although these are ok, they really are at the hobby end of the scale. At college I use a "xyz trainer lathe" and it is beautiful to use and really well thought out in comparison. If you have the space and want to do this hobby for the rest of your life, I would suggest going for the heaviest machine that your funds will stretch too. If I had better access I would have brought a lathe that was at least double the price. Good luck.
