- Classic cars, truck and a not-so-classic car make it into this video, including our two very different V8s. To begin with, a brief update regarding the 1950 V8 Pilot and its "Marmite" wing mirrors, then a few words about our '05 Jeep Hemi - also an 8-cylinder car - which has appeared in the background often but not in any depth. The Jeep's hefty 5.7L V8 engine is fired up so that H and I could drag out the grey Fergie tractor, then we head out - twice - in the '47 Dodge to collect a weighty collection of 3' x 2' concrete slabs. But why do we even need the slabs?
I like to try and use classic cars and trucks whenever possible and it was great to have the Dodge out on a bright, if chilly, winter's day, the truck's heater isn't amazing so thick woolly gloves meant I could just about feel my fingers by the time we were finished.

The Pilot looks better without the mirrors. Using the chrome bumper bolts was a great idea. Looking forward to seeing some content on the grey Fergie. It was good to hear from Mrs OCC.
Originally I wanted you to keep the wing mirrors on the Pilot, but I concede it looks much better without them. Featuring your newer cars? Yes please, including them in the OCC portfolio would be of interest to me. Nice to see the Dodge at work and seemingly taking it in its stride too.

A lovely video. Good to see mrs OCC has a voice, maybe one day we will get a glimpse of her . The Optima batteries are great, I use them in my boat, and had a 95 landy tray back that I used it in also. It would be good to see the moderns occasionally. Great getting little Dodge out doing what it was meant to do. A very good video, well done.

My favourite part is definitely seeing the old truck working asit was meant to. Really satisfying to watch.

Much better without the mirrors ! I'm sure the Dodge could have coped with more slabs than you had in her. So, Mrs OCC has a voice - it's rather like Mrs Mainwaring in Dads Army - only ever talked about but NEVER seen ! Any video you put out is interesting, old or newer vehicles, so go ahead and share them all with us. Obviously a great video Rick - thanks for sharing. Take care 🙂

Another interesting vid, I had to chuckle at you saying you’ve fitted the domed bolts “ just for now” I have a garage full of “just for now” modifications. Most of them are still there 5 years later ! That shot of the pickup being viewed in the sunlight was an awesome image. Thanks for posting.

Yes, the 1947 Dodge truck does not have 360 degrees cameras to assist in tight spaces. But at that time there was plentry of space for everyone in the USA so nobody would encounter any narrow spaces.
A very interesting video. The Pilot looks great. Although they were not as popular here in Australia as the American Ford V8s, there were quite a few on the road. The shot of Richard removing ice from the Mazda makes me glad that I live on the east coast of N.S.W. where we never see snow and only occasionally see a small amount of ice on the roofs of our cars. No one here even owns an overcoat because our temperature is so moderate, and the idea of storing a car for the winter is a completely new concept for me. I always look forward to your videos. Thank you so much.

Those large slabs are very heavy, but once they're down, they're down. Used some myself for a shed base, so much better than the lightweight ones from garden centres.
Agreed, we bought some of the lightweight new jobs but they weren't up to snuff

I agree that the mirrors are better off. I thought it was ironic, towing a tractor. Hoorah! You say your 2005 Jeep is of an age, so my 2003 Honda Civic fits the bill. My good news on that is that it is ULEZ compliant, I live in the new extended zone, near Heathrow Airport. Of course the airport is cleaner than all the cars in the area. 😊
I think it's the first time I've towed the tractor, more often it's that doing the pulling. I think we tried to pull the Commer with it but in the end also reverted to the Jeep (being 4wd)
Huge improvement to the Pilot's wings - best thing you've done all year! 😄It looks absolutely fine with the ex-bumper bolts. Laughed at you fretting over the wax being two years adrift from the Pilot's vintage! Loved seeing your tins of washers and bolts - something I'm mercilessly mocked over by my children. Had a chuckle at Mrs OCC bemoaning her damaged turf! It's time she is interviewed about all the shenanigans going on in her driveway! Excellent Sunday viewing, as usual.
Yes can never have too many screws, washers and such like, your offspring will understand one day I'm sure .... ;-)

Regarding the Pilot, if you could pick up the ignition supply direct from the battery it would avoid the volt drop caused by the high cranking current, just a thought. Seasons greetings to all at OCC.
Funnily enough I was thinking the exact same thing while in bed last night, I'll give that a go next time I steel myself to head into the garage
It is a bit cold to be tinkering, My 2cv tricycle went into hibernation last week, met at to cold to touch.
Just a word from experience ... be careful when using coiled extension leads as a high load can cause them to overheat. Should be ok for a battery charger, but something to be aware of.

hi, great video. love the jeep estate car but when i think of Jeeps i think of the ww2 open jeeps which John Wayne used to go around in the war films, cant wait to see the tractor going again, Agriline are good for tractor parts or Mayhill tractors, you may need to look at the air cleaner as condesation could have fallen in the oil bath, good luck

Those "newer" Jeeps have a reputation for electrical gremlins. In models with start-stop systems or powered accessories like winches, the smaller, auxiliary battery can draw the main battery flat if it goes bad. A friend also had a bad cable do the same in his Jeep Patriot.
Nice to have OCC waiting when an old Yank wakes in the wee hours for a visit to the cultural base! Always a treat to reminisce about the '41 Dodge pickup (a onetime "Worcester Power and Light" {Massachusetts} workhorse) I refurbished for Dad in the early '70's. We used it just as you do, my young self in Harley's role. Our Bassett hound, Royce loved riding in it, with the Coleman cooler to rest his big forepaws on, when the windshield was cracked open by way of the turn-screw prominent in your video --his nose leather pressed into the wind, drool flying everywhere.
I'm for keeping the wing mirrors in the boot. One wonders if a quick release receptacle was ever devised for that sort. It often feels as though our collector cars, by nature of their lovable old geezer looks, add a sense of security not available to us when motoring in modern wheels. People naturally slow down for a look, and the more leisurely pace we use in them gives more time to get a better look rearward, and we tend to be more careful, driving them, as well. The Ford certainly fits the role beautifully.

The holes in the grass were filled in with fresh soil only today, we may end up putting the tractor back in the same spot so any depressions in the ground should be hidden :)
The grey Fergie tractor brings back memories. When I was a small boy I was at The Tyne Commisioner's Quay at North Shields which was the principal port serving the Blatic and its countries. There was at least 200 of them waiting to be loaded on a ship bound for The Soviet Union which was quite a thing to see.I have visions of the Hemi under the hood of The Pilot which would make the ultimate sleeper but the Jeep would not be so powerful powered by the venerable flathead!
As I mentioned previously the wing mirrors aren't ugly just out of place and in the way, stick with the clip on mirrors that you have, that's exactly what I intend to do on my 1964 Jaguar MKII, don't want to drill holes in my new wings.
Over here the Americans go crazy 'it's a Hemi' I then have to remind them that Jaguar have been making 'Hemi's' since at least 1947.
Yes wing mirrors on a Mk2 can really spoil the lines, the only ones that look almost-ok are the racing/bullet shaped ones

They are better off RJ I certainly think and those chrome bumper bolts look good actually. Mrs OCC doesn't sound to happy about the grass. Enjoyable Sunday brekkie viewing. I have to smile to myself and wonder what others think when they see that old American pickup trundling along UK country roads and pulling into Morrisons for fuel.

I wish I'd kept the camera running after getting fuel, as a bloke in a modern Skoda next to me started honking his horn after I got back in after paying, impatient with me for (he thought) not leaving him enough space to pull his own car in alongside the next pump, and taking too long to start up and move out of the way. I got out and had a polite chat with him, thus taking up a little more of his time.
Unfortunately we live in a society currently that is rife with selfish, entitled morons and it is difficult to avoid them at times. If that happens to me I just take my time more and basically just ignore them. That annoys them quite a bit.@@oldclassiccarUK

Thanks for an excellent video,I was hoping the Pilot would lose those darned mirrors! A good solution using chrome headed bolts to fill the holes.I love your tinkering videos but expect that they will be few and far between as winter draws on!
Thanks Peter, yes tinkerings do tail off a bit when it's soooo chilly but we were outside messing around today and so long as we kept moving, it was ok.
Some suggestions from the peanut gallery; restore the glass and frames of the truck before they rust out beyond repair, drive all your vehicles on the road at some periodically planned interval, get something called a battery maintainer for each of your non daily driver vehicles, store your vehicles with a full tank of fuel!

Content from the more modern vehicles would be fun. The WK and MX are very common here in the US and the design changes required for different regulations are always interesting.
Comparing my US export Midget to my friend's UK model was fun.

Could you have used acorn(domed) nuts on the top of the fender with rubber washer under the nuts base and another below the fender to seal the hole top and bottom.
That's kind of what I did with the domed bumper bolts
A good idea to put the dome bolts in the wings on the Pilot but I would favour some curved mirrors at some point. I think that the battery is toast, they shouldn't give up within a year. I have heard 'Tanya' batteries are good, some CZcams folks recommend them. Very nice to see the pickup out and doing what it was designed for, very likely the most work it has done for many years. I think Rick you have already lost some Brownie points from Mrs OCC's comment about the grass! I am sure you know but tell Harley that the bed for those slabs needs to be level otherwise the slabs will break if put onto uneven ground. Perhaps a layer of sharp sand would be best? Have you employed spray ether (hot start) to fascinated cold starting?
A squirt of petrol works well enough for me, not keen on Easy Start and such like
Those shades of green I loved when I traveled England don't look quite as lovely on modern vehicles. As for the Pilot, the bumper bolts look better than the flag mirrors. I agree until other arrangements (If any) replace them. Thanks again for an entertaining post.

There's an old Mopar heater in the Dodge which does put out some warmth, although its efficiently is diminished somewhat due to the gaps in the floor :-)
Here in Croatia a lot of the tractors are copies of the grey Fergie but I think most of them date to the 1970s. I think in Africa they made them even later than that.
Ask Father Christmas for a battery jump starter - they're really handy. Even the baby TopDon Jumpsurge 1200 which I've got is perfect to get you out of a jam and it's rated for up to 6.5L petrols👍
If there is one available that does 6v and 12v I'd look into getting one
@@oldclassiccarUK yes fair point, 12v only I think. But for £50 I'd have one anyway for the moderns including your MX5. I carry mine in the car all the time which has saved me a call to the recovery services in Devon - and helped out a Rover P6 at a classic car show last year😀
