Glad o was turned on to ABC and many of the UK bands back in 82/83. I used to listen to this alum on tape on my Sony Walkman 2 while most were listening to Michael Jackson and other pop hits heard on the radio. I also got to see them live in 83 in San Francisco. It was great bc we all dressed up in the British fashions that wasn’t popular with the mainstream yet. Seeing other all dressed up for the concert and regular ppl. looking puzzled and couldn’t wrap their minds around bc most dressed this way to go to underground clubs in 82/83 and not walking around in large groups. Lol!
Damn, I envy you. I was born in '81 and only experienced the '80s as a young child. Sure, the cartoons and toys were great, but I would have loved to be older.
I had the pleasure of DJing in the late 70's & early 80's, this was a floor filler, still got the vinyl copy of this & many more! Gone are the days of humping boxes of vinyl around now, but great times.

So much of English popular music of the 1980s was strongly influenced by Motown. You can hear it in the sounds and arrangements, and even see it in the on-stage acts. ABC was a great example of this. Thanks for uploading this.

Kraftwerk and others like them had nothing substantive to rebel against in their personal lives, and so their "music" (was it music? I wonder) was just a chance to be contrary for the sake of being contrary. One could say as much for Yoko Ono's screeching garbage. As such, Kraftwerk-inspired dreck by its very nature only appealed to a much smaller audience. And that audience evaporated within a few years because it had grown up.

I was totally numbed because this new sound was magnetically hypnotic. This New Wave ignited an epic decade of the British Invasion once again. Culture Club and others led the way while American bands stood and watched, the 80's freakin' jammed and I was a part of it!

81 to 85 was a special time, the music, music videos. there was a real buzz,its like pop music did a leapfrog and made all the music before it sound old fashioned.
It was the death of disco but the birth of so many new waves of protest and expression. We see punk, electro, funk, jazz, house, techno, hip hop, industrial, heavy metal, new romantic and gothic music emerging and influencing each other to create an experimental explosion in pop.
@L Mc i would say true, but for black music it extends also to the end of the 80s, and genre specifically into the early 90s, but the peak creative energy was definitely in the 80s.

In the concert I saw in 83, they had a small orchestra playing the string instruments. That was very classy for a not so well known band back then.
