  • Betty is a wire-haired pointer who has been working as a truffle hunting dog for the past three years. On a quiet, cold November morning, she is hard at work locating and helping to dig out tuber magnatum or the precious white truffle which sells for around $6,000/kg. With no use for money herself, Betty happily works for sausages, affection, praise and the pleasure she takes in being out in the forest with the rest of her family

Love your channel and have just binge watched it 😊
I have a 5/6 yr old mix breed, possibly spanish waterdog cross and decided after watching your training i would try with him, he's been amazing, we went from smearing oil on tennis balls, his favourite game, hunt the ball, it was like tennis balls on speed, so went onto foil wrapped, that was yesterday, today i put some in the forest and he found them all, even the one that i couldnt remember where it was. I was doing it for fun, for us both, but i also live in the perigord, and am fortunate enough to be house sitting all winter on the edge of huge forests, i think there is the right mixture of trees, soil is not compact and altitude around 600.
My worry is how do i know if he would find a real truffle, do you think its worth buying one, i think the truffle markets start in a couple of weeks, but in the meantime we are having great fun, i even got his happy bark today, which he normally only does when he is on a pack walk.
Looking forward to your next video

What fantastic progress! Sounds like it would definitely be worth getting some real truffles over the winter to continue your training. Try and get hold of the lowest grade (third class/C grade) they should be fairly cheap. In the meantime I love hearing about older dogs who take to hunting like this and it makes me very happy to hear that the pair of you are having tremendous fun!

Thank you, I will take your advice and give it a go. Fingers crossed, we can try one of your recipes, with our own truffle

Hii, I have a question, I live in Spain, currently is the first season that I am going with my dog to find black truffles and I've found.
I've heard that in summer there are the summer truffles and I want to know for example If the summer truffles grow in the same places as the black truffles,
would it be possible to find a summer truffle in the same tree where I found a black truffle in the previous winter???
    Thank you!!
    I love your channel

Hi and thanks for a great question. It is not uncommon to find different species of truffle growing in the same location. For example we often find tuber brumale and mesentericum when we are hunting magnatum. In your case, I think the black truffle you are talking about is the tuber melanosporum ...if so then these truffles need a quite different set of growing conditions compared to the tuber aestivum or black summer truffle. So even though both truffles grow under oak trees in stony soils, it is pretty unlikely that you would find them in the exact same forest at different times of the year

@@TheRealTruffleHunters Thank you very much for your answer!!.
Yes, currently we are finding tuber melanosporum, but I've heard that in summer in some places of my area some people find Tuber aestivium but I'm not sure where to go to find.

Wow that was a lot of work getting that one. I noticed he would occasionally smell a handful of soil. Is that because the closer to the truffle the stronger the smell gets? Now because im not sure if i had told you i have some news concerning my health. About 2 weeks ago I was in the hospital. It was decided it was time to amputate my right foot and most of my leg below the knee. So im currently wheelchair bound. But don't worry. Im getting measured for my new foot and leg tomorrow. It will be a temporary. After a few months ill get measured again for my permanent leg. So i should have my temporary in about a month. That means no more wheelchair and i can drive again. So basically that will be my Christmas present this year and im really looking forward to it. Don't think this is the end. Nope it's a new beginning. I'll be looking for my new pup during this time. Once i can walk again i wish to shortly after get the pup ( the cat is NOT going to like that) But i see it as my inspiration to begin to walk again and be a type of physical therapy. The pup learning obedience training and eventually hunting training for both birds and truffles. I will teach him and he will physically help and train me. It's going to be a great journey. And i promise to video this journey so maybe i can inspire others. So as always im looking forward to seeing your next video. Have a great day. 😊

Victor you really have been through the mill this last year so it is very inspiring that you are taking these changes onboard and looking for the positive in what must have been a really traumatic experience. We are all wishing you a speedy recovery and continued good spirits!

@TheRealTruffleHunters thank you for your kind words, they mean a lot. I have had almost 1 year to mostly think about healing and getting on again with my life. It's going to be a new start. Getting back to doing the things I love, salmon fishing, gardening and cooking. But also doing new things like finally putting up content on CZcams, hunting for wild mushrooms, hunting for truffles, training a new pup to hunt for birds and truffles and the list goes on. So I'm looking forward to sharing this new stage of my life with others. Have a great day.

@@victorbenner539 Can't wait to see these videos - nature can be such a great healer as can the companionship of a good dog or a good person but what will really heal you is your determination and the beauty that you see in life! Hope you have a great day and not too much discomfort.
