    The German Wirehaired Pointer is an elite Upland game bird hunter. Wirehairs are a great hunting dog, very adept at hunting, pionting and retrieving game.
    In California CIty the AKC held a multi breed field test in California City, Ca. Among the breeds present were German Wirehairs, Shorthairs, Vizsla, and Brittanies.
    I was able to catch up with Cathie Magoon, who has been breeding WIrehairs for over 20 years. She shared a wealth of information on the breed's history, standard, healthy and temperament.

    I just lost my best friend Gino after 12yrs Best hunting dog I've ever had and compainion. These dogs are so friendly and personable and absoluity my dog of choice for life. Im looking for anouther one now. This bread of dog is my personal choice. Ive had dogs all my life,Labs, GSPs and GWPs, I love them all, but GWP's get the job done. I miss my Gino, greatest dog ever, and with tears in my eyes I say," good by old friend Ill see you again when its my time to go. Be a good dog".

    Thanks for sharing. I'm from Melbourne, Australia and this breed is the most popular breed for hunting sambar deer in the Victorian high country. They are also used on ducks and quail.

    My family and I are friends with the breeder shown here, we help them with their dog shows quite frequently. We have gotten 3 amazing dogs from them. I don't think we are ever going to get another breed. Very beautiful and smart dogs, great with kids and extremely friendly to anyone they meet. I routinely take my dogs to the beach or hiking and they love it. Whether I'm sitting around my house doing nothing or taking a hike, I know they're by my side through it all. Honestly, the best breed of dog I have ever encountered. If you're on the fence about getting a wirehair, do it. Cathy will take care of you, she's an extremely kind and knowledgeable lady. She clearly does this out of love for the dogs, and it's not hard to see why.
    Much love Cathy,
    Chris

    I love this episode! I can literally watch it 100 times! The GWHP is the ultimate dog in my opinion. Here in Bulgaria, in eastern Europe, we use them even for large game drive like red stag and the dangerous wild boar. They are sturdy, brave and loyal. Also when I saw Murdoc my eyes melted as I lost my 4 mounts old puppy who looked exactly like him from parovirosis last year just days before I had planed to take him to the vet for second vaccine. Best of luck to your dogs though because they are lovely!

      Владимир Василев be careful with them labeling illnesses as parvovirus. With my Alex he had his first parvovirus shot and he was puking badly one night (a week later) and we took him to an ER vet and the vet labeled him as having parvovirus (the shot gives the test a false positive if given shortly after receiving the shot) and racked up a huge bill and I took him to my normal vet the following morning and after serval tests it turned out he was allergic to his food and never had parvovirus.

      Според теб стават ли за домашни любимци? Харесва ми много породата, но не съм ловец, живея в града. Дали ще е щастливо в апартамент, но с много разходки и игри? Днес видях едно такова куче, вързано пред магазин, беше страшно лигаво, но гледаше и много умно същевременно

    One time my GWP pointed at a squirrel and I said my release word never thinking she’d catch it. Sure enough she did and I as a 14 year old emotional girl had to praise her for doing what she’s born to do while holding back tears since I was the reason she got it 😂 great tempered and amazingly behaved dog. Oh and only dog at daycare that when playing fetch returned the ball to the workers there 😂 sweetest dog ever. RIP pickly. 💜

    Great breed, love my GWP! Exercise is key, I live in the middle of a city, my wirehair and I start our day (except in our brutal winter season) with a 10 km run while I pedal for all I'm worth. Appreciate the video, always a pleasure to listen to an experienced successful breeder, keep up the great work and dedication!

    • @animalobsessed1
      @animalobsessed1 Před 6 lety

      How does your Wirehair do with all the crowds and other dogs (who may not always be under control)? I'm also living in the city and trying to find an active dog, and this is one of my main concerns, with most working breeds having a tendency to easily become reactive...

    • @troypower4733
      @troypower4733 Před 6 lety

      My Wirehair is an intact male, he is amazing with other dogs unless another male is aggressive towards him, I need to be observant. Has not had a fight though and is currently 5 years old. We have been charged by off lead large dogs when I bike with him, I stop and face the other dog, have not had an instance where there has been a problem, they usually approach, they sniff and all has been well. When he is in run mode while I bike he does not even look at other dogs, key is exercise and they are a great breed to do that with. He adores children (although I do not have kids), is very socialble and is used to traffic and has no issues in crowds, etc. He listens really well and learns fast, very intelligent, but can be distracted by cats and small animals. For me it is either a GWP or a GSP, however, if you are looking for slightly smaller and a little easier to handle when under 3yrs old, a pointing Griffon might be a breed for you to consider as well.

    • @animalobsessed1
      @animalobsessed1 Před 6 lety

      Thanks, your dog sounds awesome, but I will look into the pointing Griffon too. There are so many breeds, it's so hard to decide!

    • @troypower4733
      @troypower4733 Před 6 lety +1

      Yes he is and there certainly are many breeds to chose from, take your time, plan and make sure you are ready. Obedience class when they are puppies and much more, invest the time, all will pay off. Visit the breeder and check out the parents too. I put my deposit down before the breeding took place and only after I took the time to visit the breeder and my dogs sire and dam, that sold me on feeling comfortable and assured me I would have the odds on my side. I have shown my dog too, as I did my former GSP's in the past, in my opinion very good for socializing a dog, teaches a dog good behaviour under plenty of distraction. Good luck with your search, all the best!

      Germanic dog breeds are usually more versatile than breeds from Great Britain. I have a German Short hair pointer who will push out rabbits, For some reason she won't point them, plus point and retrieve game birds. She will even sit and retrieve doves.Any vermin didn't live long, groundhogs rats and voles were killed as soon as she saw them She also was very protective of my wife and son. More than once her bared teeth and the growl from deep in her chest made people think twice about it. Sadly she is now 14 and has slowed down to where she sleeps most of the time.

      @ve3yjt Před 4 lety

      Peter Davis not a lot of difference. DDs are registered with the VDD rather than the AKC, so they are not eligible for competition in AKC dog shows. Very little difference in physical characteristics. AKC allows white but penalizes black coat GWPs, wrt conformity, while VDD allows black, but rejects solid white patches larger than 3” (tick coat is the correct coat) for breeding qualification (there is no score penalty, as they aren’t a show breed, but an incorrect coat would be disqualified for breeding). Other than that DDs must be field tested before qualifying for breeding, while any two registered GWPs can be bred and produce a brood that qualifies for registration as GWP.

    How would you compare them to a pudelpointer?

    • @ve3yjt
      @ve3yjt Před 4 lety

      Similar. Depending on breeding, you can find a particular Pudelpointer that is more like a typical GWP, or vice versa. PPs are *cough* GENERALLY felt to be less energy in the house. Somewhat less aggressive, but that is a general stereotype. They’re quite close cousins, the GWP having been bred from PPs. Both are fantastic versatile breeds.

    • @ve3yjt
      @ve3yjt Před 4 lety

      Of course the PP is generally field tested to qualify for breeding, like the DD, rather than the GWP, which is a little more lax in breeding qualification (basically as long as the sire and dam are both registered GWPs, they’re good to breed)

    I am getting a dog and I don't know which one to get. I'm thinking about a German wirehaired pointer or a German shorthaired pointer. I can't choose I need help

      I've owned both at different times, have my first wirehair now...they are both such great breeds it doesn't matter, as others have mentioned just go with the one that appeals to you most. I know what I'm doing in the future, getting one of each!

    Old trick for hard mouth dogs, put pins in a fetch toy, or whatever training aid you ar using, a couple times trying to chomp down will cure a hard mouth very effectively, and no it isn't cruel unusual punishment.

    Great video but for the awesome content you put out, you should do a separate video on the Drahthaar. They are superior by far. I groom several, including the top Drahthaar in the world and there is nothing like them. Higher standards than the GWH means a better dog truer to its purpose.

      I agree, I wish we had higher standards in America with all breeds. Too many backyard breeders and puppy mills churning out dogs strictly for money because they are "papered". In my opinion, this is why we have so many issues with certain breeds like labs and goldens.

      Everyone's got a gimmick. This post is demonstrably false. As it happens., German-imported wirehairs (German term Drahthaar) are AKC registerable as wirehairs and many are. They don't do very well in competition here. Slow old-style non-stylish meat dogs. They're ok. You can do better with a well-selected regular wirehair of US bloodlines..

      @@coveyssteve Drahthaars aren't bred for competition, they're bred for hunting and tracking. They have testing when the dog is younger. Tests to qualify for breeding.

      @jeanettewaverly2590 Před 6 lety +1

      No, they don't live there. That was the site of AKC field trials for a number of hunting and pointing breeds. It's in the Mojave Desert, CA, near the towns of Mojave, Boron, and California City.

      Jojo circus fully trained. Old horse handler terminology. A “broke” horse or dog has completed all desired training, learned all it needs to learn for its intended task, and will always defer to handler’s command.
