- Many people dealing with anxiety disorders experience problems sleeping from time to time. Many anxious people also wind up stuck in mental loops where they obsess about sleep and worry excessively about not sleeping and not sleeping "properly". This can result in a few common themes that revolve around disastrous feared outcomes associated with sleep or sleep disturbances.
"If I don't sleep enough, I can't heal and will never get better!"
"If I don't sleep enough, I will seriously harm my body and get very sick or die!"
"If I don't sleep enough, my anxiety will go through the roof!"
Let's examine these three common sleep-related anxiety themes this week.
(Special shout out to @OisinOMalley for inspiring the "Eddie" bits in this episode. Check him out if you're into watches, whiskey, wine, cigars, and just super cool video of awesome places in Italy)

When you’re in a job where you need to be fully rejuvenated, because of the responsibility one has over people’s safety, proper sleep is essential. It’s always been my most precise barometer for being able to gauge where my mental health is at. I understand the feedback loops which one can fall into, but in times of high stress, not sleeping well is one of the consequences.
In the past one year I’ve been improving and suffering more than usual simultaneously, we could call it a significant transition that I’m going through, and occurring for various reasons which unfortunately is also affecting my sleep more than usual. Considering I’ve had OCD for over 30 years, I’ve generally slept well, it’s definitely felt when I’m not. Good sleep is paramount. It generally works it self out but you can, as you point out get caught up in worrying about it too much.
It's that "worry about sleep" thing that can make a challenging situation feel impossible. You are spot on there for sure!
👍
Hi Drew! Love this episode and would love even more to have you as a guest on our channel 🤗 Our message is what you teach but focused on insomnia. If you read this, it would be super to connect!
Sounds good to me. I will get in touch. ;-)
This is great news cuz' a psyhiatrist told me if i don t sleep enough i will not recover from anxiety and i will get worse. Me having sleeping problems and anxiety....oh how i spiraled from there...
I'm sorry that you had that experience. Sometimes even helpers with the best of intentions can accidentally make things worse this way.
@@TheAnxiousTruth thank you
I am afraid to sleep. It reminds me of death and state of unconsciousness. I turn on night light to be able to fall asleep. Sleep is very unpleasant and scary to me
You may find the "death and existential anxiety" episode of the podcast helpful in re-framing how an anxious mind gets stuck on those thoughts and concepts.

You’re not alone I feel the exact same way but some nights I feel positive some days I’m not so well . But I know we will get through
My anxiety at night is like being electrocuted over and over with adrenaline and anxiety. It’s hell. Pleas help me.
See the sleep coach school channel videos it's really helpful for sure.

So that guy WALKER who writes books on sleep , is let's say, not really correct !? Yez he is all over youtube and now has Andrew Hubbermann preaching his crap!
When the claims in that book were called into question from a scholarly point of view and the W.H.O. came out and said that they never said what he quoted in the book, he and his university just kinda shrugged and quietly did a "Our bad ...". But didn't change anything. The book tours and book promotion just kept moving right along. I have zero respect for a guy that was a respected researcher that decided to just cross the line to sell lots of books. And frankly, his university has been happy to quietly go along for the ride. But what to do I know? ;-)
@@TheAnxiousTruth dam, sad..very very sad, it just scares thousands of people,,,and now on Hubermann , Walker, always about the money so many times
Keep the vides coming
