This was the song that saved BAND-MAID. "Thrill" was only the b-side to "Ai to Jonetsu no Matador" but the Maids liked the heavier style of Thrill" & spent their budget on an MV for it instead. She will also be using a pic and like a magician, she tucks it away and will slap some parts, and then pull the pic out again. At that point, Miku was just holding the Rickenbacker. She took on the rhythm guitar duties after they finalized their lineup so they wouldn't have to hire another girl. She had to learn on the job. Kanami (lead guitar) has been her teacher for the past decade. It's the same bass player. She switches up all the time and can switch from pick to slap and back again without dropping her pick. She tucks it against her palm with her index finger when she wants to slap. Watch for it in other videos but don't blink or you'll miss it. 😁

  • @Willywin
    @Willywin Před měsícem +6

All the original band members, Saiki (Lead Singer) having joined shortly after the band was formed. Miku, founder and playing the Rickenbacker was the original lead singer but stood aside as she felt Saiki's voice better suited the music that she envisaged the band playing. The band and management decided rather than have two singers, the addition of a Rhythm guitar would give them more versatility as Kanami (Lead Guitar) would then be free'd up to do lead guitar stuff. Rather than add an additional member it was a choice between Saiki and Miku as to who would play Rhythm. Saiki didnt want to, so Miku said she'd do it. Kanami became her teacher (theres the Japanese equivelent to a tweet out there where Kanami says she had just given Miku her first guitar lesson). At the time of this video, Miku could barely play, if at all, and basically learned how to play while performing.
In an interview Miku said she hated playing guitar to start with as she found it so hard, but as she learnt more and then could do more she began to enjoy playing more, and now loves to play the guitar. Whenever they learn a new song Miku will still video herself practicing and send it to Kanami for Kanami's approval and advice. Maidiacs have a soft spot for Miku because she doesnt give up, and has always put the needs of the band above her own.

  • @evilducks3710

Same members from the start. As far as the bass, what has changed is she switched from 4 string to 5 string. She also plays both slap and pick, often in the same song. She can tuck the pick with her forefinger in less than a blink of an eye and keep going then pull it back again just as quick.
Band Maid self describes as a hard rock band, so calling it a hard rock riff is no insult.
The band calls their fans Masters and Princesses, this is from Maid Cafe’s in Japan. The fans mostly call themselves Maidiacs.

Thrill is really what kick-started Band-Maid's journey to become a hard rock band. The group started in 2013, but a year before Thrill dropped in 2014 and received over two million views in the first weeks of release on Facebook, the Maids hadn't played much rock music at all. And the 2nd guitarist, founder and lyricist, Miku, didn't even know how to play guitar. It's an incredible story and we are so lucky they stayed together during those early years to become, in my mind, the best hard rock band on the planet! Thx, D-Dad & Tub! btw - Same line up since the beginning!

So, there haven't been any lineup changes in their whole career except for adding the lead singer a few months after they began. I think they love each other. The founder - the rhythm guitar/second vocal - has had a solo side project, but otherwise they seem dedicate to the future of Band Maid. Kanami, the songwriter, keeps it fresh and moving forward. That has to make it more interesting to the others.

The lead guitarist, Kanami, taught the rhythm guitarist how to play and now she is quite good on guitar. Same awesome members from the start through the their tens years as a band.

The members of the band are all very good friends and goof around with each other on stage all the time. It's the original group and has not changed. If you want to see a "fun" video with a drum solo watch FREEDOM live. This video blew up on the internet and saved the band from being dropped by their label. The suits wanted them to record a more commercial song but the band insisted on Thrill. Misa (bass) will pick, finger or slap and pop depending on what each song requires, she may do all within the context of one song. She can be picking and then tuck the pick under a finger and slap and pop for while and then switch back without missing a beat. Houdini stuff. She also generally plays barefoot on stage and is referred to as "The Barefoot Assassin". Keep watching Band Maid videos and you'll get the idea. Thanks for the reaction, I would love to see this band get HUGE. You have only touched the surface of what Band Maid can do., I encourage you to keep going.

Band-Maid was the brainchild of Miku (Red Rose, in this video, the Rickenbacker, founder of the band, second lead vocals, backing vocals, rhythm guitar and main lyricist) based on the theme of the Japan's Maid Cafes. One of Miku's jobs was working at a Maid Cafes to earn money to pursue her dreams. The concept she wanted was called "the gap", cute Japanese Maids playing hard rock music, creating a juxtaposition of what you see, verses what you get. A "shock value" if you will. In the Japan Maid Cafes, they call their customers Masters and Princesses, so they refer to us as Masters and Princesses and will always refer to us, the fans, as such. The Maids call their live performances as Okyu-ji's, which translate to "servings". And during their live concerts, one of their MC breaks is dedicated to Omajinai time, "Magic Spell" time. Miku, leads this part of the show, which is entertaining own it's own, but is extremely entertaining when the other members of the band troll her. But, being the smart Pigeon (don't worry, this will make sense the deeper you dive into the Maids), she rolls with it and often makes for funny memories. All of this aligned with the Maid Cafe themes. We fans call ourselves Maidiacs. PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘
    Just a couples of FYI's...
-The band started as a 4 piece, with Miku (Red Rose) as the lead singers. Being the smart Pigeon which she is, after a very short time she realized her "Pop voice" wasn't quite edgy enough for where she envisioned the music to go, so she went to Management to find another singer. Enter Saiki (Blue Rose). No egos in the band, as they all do what best to serves the band and their songs. So they became a 5 piece band.
-These are all the original members from creation, entering their 11th year of serving us.
-Fun fact, in this video, Miku is holding the Rickenbacker as a prop. Miku didn't play any instruments prior to the band's formation. It was determined they needed a second guitarist to fill out their sound. Miku did not want to add another member to the band, so it would come down to either her or Saiki, When Saiki refused, she "volunteered" to learn to play the rhythm guitar under lead guitarist Sensei Kanami and has since become an excellent guitarist in her own right.
-During the pandemic, Saiki has started to learn guitar and piano. In fact, at the 10th Anniversary Finale at Yokohama Arena, the show where the live "Hate?" was shot, to the surprise of everyone, she played piano on stage for the first time. Do a acoustic solo version of "Choose Me".

Nice reaction! MISA eventually switched from 4 to 5 strings and mostly pick, as the songs became more intense. She still does fingers only on some lower tempo songs like About Us, Memorable and Mirage (my personal favorite). For their 4th album she seriously practiced tucking her pick under her index finger, so she could seamlessly switch between pick and slapping for the song Moratorium (a big fan favorite). That has become a trademark of hers, together with performing without shoes.

Everyone has already mentioned that this is the same lineup as it has been for 10 years. Miku is just air-guitaring it at the moment, but under the direction of her sensei Kanami she has turned herself into quite the proficient rhythm guitarist and is indispensable as the bridge between Kanami, Misa and Akane.
The other thing about this video is that it saved Band Maid from breaking up. At this time, their management was not happy with their progression and refused to let them do their own songs and were ready to cut them loose. Miku and the ladies had no idea that this was going on behind the scenes. So the decision was to make a video and Thrill was picked for the song.
The video went on CZcams and I believe someone in the US picked up on it and liked it. They put the video on Facebook and it exploded, as hard rock had gone to shit in the US and we were starved for good rock. After that, it just exponentially attracted fans across the globe and they became the Band Maid we see today, with more fans outside Japan than inside. That has also changed and they have become more popular at home.
To get a better idea of their musicianship, you should check out some of their instrumentals. First check out the live official video of "Onset" (it's a real banger) and the MV for "From Now On", which is a bit heavier than normal, but just an outstanding composition. Another great song to show fan participation is the live official video of "Don't You Tell Me" from the same 2023 Yokohama concert that "Hate" came from. There's yet another fantastic bass/guitar solo battle in that video also. Great reaction.

The only change they have made was that Miku, the one with the Rickenbacker guitar, opted out her selfe of being the lead singer and they found Saiki instead. Welcome Masters and Princesses to the best rock band on the planet. Any Maids track always ROCKS as they come for your soul. These beautiful ladies are in their early 30s now and have been rocking for 10 years with plenty of Solo work from Misa (bass) and Kanami (lead). Drum fills and solos from Akane are killer. The great thing is they always look so happy.
Thrill the track that blew them up on the world stage, after a slow start it suddenly went viral outside of Japan with an MV on Facebook (the label was about drop them when this happened in 2015), Domination, Freedom, Onset, From now on, Without Holding Back, Hate? Are all great tracks and they have an extensive back catalogue (130+ tracks).
    The 5 Band-Maid members:
SAIKI Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. The youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions.
MIKU Kobato (Me-Ku), "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals and lyricist. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR Spokes Pigeon. I believe she couldn’t play when she formed the band and was tutored by Kanami.
KANAMI Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want is more!
AKANE Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa), "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Their Battle Gear as they call it with slight variations are standard maid outfits for Akane, Miku and Kanami, a head maids outfit for Saiki and a Ninja maid outfit for Misa.

The following is just my opinion about the influence of the BabyMetal phenomenon on the creation of BandMaid. Opinion not fact:
Band founder, the Mighty Miku Kobato is as sharp as a tack and as hard as nails while being the poster girl for cuteness. I suspect when she was in the underground idol band Lil Cumin she realized that BabyMetal was gaining loads of fans combining metal music with idol cuteness. Being the astute business woman she is she pitched the idea of Maid cafe maids who actually PLAY hard rock music to the suits. And so 10+ years later with the same lineup, no changes in any of the members, they have a deep catalog of over 130 songs. The only change came with the addition of Saiki Atsumi as the lead vocalist after 4 performances. No other changes.
BTW if you dropped Miku Kobato in the middle of the Sahara with a kazoo she would still find a way to become a rock star! Or a fighter pilot or any other bloody thing she set her mind to!

Band Maid self describes as a hard rock band. But they do every variety of rock. Thrill was not written by the band. Their first 20+ songs were provided by management, as their own early compositions were not deemed adequate. Take a listen to Alone, their first band written song. And listen to Non Fiction Days, and Real Existence. Outside sourced and arguably templates for their "sound".

Not true! BAND-MAID never had any "lineup changes". And, actually, she is not playing at Rickenbacker. Or rather I should say, it is a Rickenbacker that she is not playing. Miku couldn't play guitar at all when she formed BAND-MAID. However, it was either learn to play or hire a sixth member, so she had Kanami teach her to play. And learning to play and sing at the same time is tough enough, but to do it while in a working band compounds it. She soo ditched the Rick for Zemaitis. And yes, we all loved Akane's Tiny Hat, may it rest in peace. Actually MISA originally wore t. But the only thing she changed was switching back and forth between Pick and Slap, and she never drops it. Check out 'Onset' LIVE. Only BAND-MAID call their fans Masters & Princesses. We don't call ourselves that. We're not The Maids. We are The Maidiacs.

Again, this wrong myth persists. The band was originally performing with dual lead singers, both fronting and holding a mic. That was the case when they performed this live. However, by the time they were playing this, Miku was already strapping in for about half of their set, playing and singing. Live footage from this period proves that.

Misa switches between styles so quickly you have to go frame by frame to see her tuck the pick to slap and bring it back. Her solo in “Onset” probably shows it best. She recently mentioned that she wrote a bass part for a song in what we assume will be for the new album that switches between pick and slap almost every measure. She jokingly said she might end up regretting it but I can’t wait to see her pull it off. The most consistent finger style would be from the Christmas Acoustic Livestream from a few years ago. The softer sound is amazing behind the acoustic guitars.

band line up hasn't changed since they became 5 members, Misa the Bassist can play pic, finger and slap in fast rotation as she has the technique of stashing the pic in the crook of her finger. if you watch Domination live performance you get a close up of her doing it and just how fast she does it during a bass solo.
Miku the rhythm guitarist is holding a Rickenbacker but thats all shes doing as she doesn't play a note here, she has only just taken on the responsibility to start learning to play under Kanami (lead guitarist) as her teacher. Kanami plays both guitars in the actual recording. Miku has come on incredibly from the beginning and is now a great guitarist

Miku's lack of experience with the Rickenbacher has been covered already, but I have my own speculation on why she chose it. She asked Kanami for a recommendation on which guitar to buy, and she said to just pick whatever she liked. When she came back with the Rick, Kanami basically facepalmed. Now for the speculation part...I think Miku chose it simply because it was black and white and would coordinate with the maid aesthetic better...red outfits in this video notwithstanding, since the other videos with this guitar have the black/white maid outfits.

Some bassists may throw their picks away to slap, but you use the same pick when you change from slapping to picking again, right?
