      Yes for him to charge £80 +vat an hour is necessary to make a profit with that many admin/back office staff. The question is, from a customer perspective do I want to pay £96 an hour to company with seven staff and subcontractors or do I want to pay £30 an hour, without VAT to a similarly qualified electrician to do the same scope of works.Hmmmm let me think. Jords I think in the domestic sector you will price yourself out of the market . Your best bet is commercial with the way you have grown your business. Take for example your regular board swap say 5 hours for a nice easy one with testing and certification. He wants nearly 500 labour plus say £250 for the rcbo/spd/board so £750 inc vat. Most solo sparks want 400-500 for that and still make £300 for a short day if they bung in a split load hagar board

    • @DBPLUMBING
      @DBPLUMBING Před 3 lety +2

      @@Marco-mg9tv but every successful business needs to make profit. If someone is charging £30 an hour for a trade they aren't making profit! Jordan is doing something rite otherwise he wouldn't be in a successful business 👍🏻

    Well your clearly thinking along the right lines and welcome to the world of finding out you can have loads of work but hardly making a profit.
    The worst thing for a an engineering business is to be caught in the middle in terms of size. Sometimes better to make a big leap to a larger size and probably not by doing more of the same. For example what about industrial work or specialist work in hazardous sectors. You don’t have to be expert yourself in new adventures only capable of recognising how to make money. There will surely come the time and it look’s like being soon when you will give up the tools. You know your business best . good luck.

    Are you aware of the rule of thumb for what you should earn for an employee? It's between 2.5 and 4x depending on the skill. If you regard an electrician as highly skilled then it will be x2.5. It's a pretty general rule but a good rule to work to.

    Great work Jordan, it is difficult to decide the road forward, do you remain on the tools or do a more managerial role - I remember on a Patreon chat asking you where you see yourself next year, more on the tools or more of managerial role. I know you'll miss being on the tools if you become a manager - personally when I moved off the tools I immediately missed it but that's the way it goes but it helps if we can keep up to speed with things. Just remember when it scales up to keep up the high standards and I'm sure it will be fine. Try to keep your staff interested too with routes to promotion, well done, next year we'll be Millionaires 👍
