I’m partial to the Coralla for the awd, mostly cause I’m in a wintry climate
That's a tough choice, I love the sound of the 3 cylinder engine in the GR Corolla, but Hondas screaming v-tec civic is also exciting too. I'll go with the corolla because it'll be funnier seeing peoples faces when they get gapped by a Toyota corolla
Fully agree. A “rally” set up feels much more special and useful for street driving.
If you live in a primarily wet/snowy climate, sure. If where you live is primarily dry then absolutely not. CTR wipes the floor with the GR in everything other than dig racing and perhaps aesthetics. K20c1 also has a lot more wiggle room to make power.
I respectfully disagree. I drove both and the gearbox in the CTR is far superior than the rubbery GRC shifter. As far as driving dynamics, yes there is wheel hop when accelerating hard from a stop, but let's not forget the CTR wasn't meant to be a drag strip star. Its a hot hatch that thrives on a circuit or backroads. FWD cars inherently have torque steer, but Honda engineers have done an outstanding job dialing it out as much as possible with suspension tuning, helical LSD, and electronics. I've driven a ton of FWD cars and the FL5 CTR has the least amount of torque steer, even with 315hp on tap. Lastly, you talk about the GRC being more "special". I know this is subjective, but when you take into account exterior and interior styling, driving dynamics, exclusivity, and lineage, the Type R gets the nod IMO. The GRC's stocky, muscular exterior and 3-cyl turbo engine sets it apart from any other Corolla hatch, but the interior pretty much looks like any other Corolla, other than the seats. The Circuit has microsuede seats but the Core has plain jane cloth seats that are underwhelming. The CTR's interior is like no other Civic. The Recaro seats, the red carpet, the suede door inserts...it just feels way more premium than the GRC. I think both cars are future classics, but the CTR will be more highly regarded.
In your use case, where AWD comes in handy during the rain/snow season, I can see why you would choose the GRC. You're a winner either way, no matter which of these 2 hot hatches you choose!
This guy is a car designer. He only speaks based on the brochure and how it looks. DO you really think he knows what it feels like?
@@SwonzX uhhhh, did you even watch his other videos? He drove both.
if i lived where it never rained or snowed i'd pick the type R. i'm just sick of FWD on traction limited surfaces living in the north-east, so if it's my money it's absolutely the GRC. can't really go wrong with either vehicle though, both will put a smile on your face.
I honestly love the CTR interior. The seating position, seats and red carpet are all so amazing. Having driven both, the Corolla is just more fun light to light.
@@culley65 is the fun factor of the gr enough to overlook its downsides like worse interior and practicality?
The Type R is on another level....
Simple Answer :The New Toyota Prius + a good Wide Body kit
Oh I dig
boring
Not even a thought, obviously the Type R.
The Type R is trying to compensate for the FWD only with huge tires 😁
I have both, if you can afford either one go with the type r if you absolutely don’t need AWD. If you need AWD then you don’t have to think about the type. R
@liudxdx Most people will use these as street cars. The lack of traction in 1-2 is why I wouldn't get the civic. Even though I really like it. I don't like the looks of the corolla, and the VW is too bland. So I wouldn't buy either one of them. If the ctr or its had awd, I'd be all over it!
Honda actually made a RWD civic to replace the NSX in supergt championship
Civic Typer R >
I might be a Toyota and Lexus fanboy but the Type R has more pedigree and looks better
I have the gr and my friend has the type s both cars are incredible in their own way, I’d pick my gr over the type s and type r every time but that’s me and i prefer awd, maybe ill have both someday :)
I’ve had my gr corolla for 10 months now after testing both and couldn’t be happier
They are both good , idk what to choose
The GRC***
@@GeraldPURmost people will mod their cars for higher hp. Therefore the GRC will not be useless with 400+hp like the CTR will be. Trust me, I've had fast fwd cars. Nothing beats AWD.
You should've compared the Type R to a white GR Corolla Circuit Edition since it has black hood vents, a large black rear wing, and suede interior with red stitching.
I live in the Northeast, and having owned FWD, RWD and AWD and driven each in the snow, I'm loving AWD. The GRC engine seems to be phenomenal! 300 HP from a 1.6 liter 12 valve DOHC head. That's pretty special. 100 HP per cylinder. Add another cylinder and you have 400 HP. Add a 5th cylinder and say bye-bye to a stock Audi RS3. A 6th cylinder and bye-bye BMW M2. So incredible output for the price. I've owned a 2009 Audi TT-S Roadster and a 2013 Audi TT-RS. Audi has gone crazy with pricing on their latest Turbo Inline 5 RS cars, so I consider the GRC a baby RS3. Great value compared to other hot cars released in the past 4 years.
Type r. The gr interior is very cheap, owners complain about rattles, trans problems. Frying clutches, rear diff overheats. The list goes on. The type r is a much better car. Only benefit to the gr is awd.
Toyota just have to keep selling their boring vehicles and leave their competitors do the dirty works
I am seriously considering getting either one of these two cars now that the crazy dealer markup seems to settle down a lot. Civic Type R or GR Corolla Circuit Eddition? It's a really hard decision other than forking out 50k for a fun toy.
Just got my GRC, fantastic!!!
Trash i wouldn't pay over $34k for a corolla interior&exterior cheap..
When are we gonna see a design review of the Mazda Iconic SP concept?
Yep gr Corolla here. Building mine rn but still torn between the core or circuit. 3cylinder awd 300hp. Can't go wrong. Plus, i don't plan to add any power mods, just suspension mods if that.
Go core or premium. Core gets you 100% of the same performance.
CTR
Why?
Is better overall better build better interior ect...and the legacy is in other world compared with the new GR
Ctr is on another level
@albertofigueroa2461 the lack of awd is a huge minus.
@@steve8803 CTR survived decades of models and trims without having to use a AWD. Same logic can be applied to porsche, why isn't the 911 mid engined? because of the lineage and the passion to make something that's lacking in certain ways into perfection instead of applying a bandaid. Both are great cars but being a GR brand owner rn and a toyota fan I would choose the Type R
@@30hours51 I don't care
Thanks for not picking the Civic like every other YT’ers
For the US big open roads and market the civic by far. If you live in a country with little roads and parking garages like Japan the Toyota. The Toyota seems to small for my taste.
There’s really only a 7 in difference in length..
@@disast1ckup Then i would buy the Civic or Integra over the both the Toyota and Golf R in both markets. They just look better but wish they were AWD. With that being said because the way the Golf and Toyota are design even if roughly the same length seems like all around visibility would be better for tighter spaces.
@@disast1ckupThe interior.
@@ii_dynasty fair.. but personally the added leg room for my (admittedly rare) rear passengers isn’t enough of a draw to me. 95% of the time there’s only 2 people in my car max
As a type R owner, it’s a great car to drive. I actually reserved a Corolla first because of the AWD. For me, the biggest issue with the Corolla was the storage space and back seat room…wayyyy too small. The type R is a better car if you only have one car. If you have a regular daily already, then the Corolla is a better 2nd car. It’s just not as complete as the type R.
meanwhile plenty of us would opt for the even smaller GR Yaris if it were an option in the states.
I would pick the Civic Type R because Hondas tend to have better aftermarket support than Toyotas and I like the sound and performance of the CTR. When it comes to cars with this level of performance, I think it's better to pick the one with better aftermarket network. However my opinion is based on looking back at older Hondas that still get aftermarket support compared to Toyotas like the Celicas and MR2.
Both. Split the miles between them, and save them for like 15 years. Once you put 30-40k miles on each, stash them & get a used Camry.
Unless you live where it snow a lot I disagree. The civic has more space and has ton of aftermarket support plus the engine is more tunable in fact you can make 400hp reliably. And the power to the ground issue it’s solve by swapping the wheels to 18X9.5 wheels. You still have to deal with torque steer tho. I’m guessing if you buy this editions of this cars is cuz you’re a enthusiast and probably will be thinking of doing some mods
Type-R gang gang! Always prefer honda over toyota, 本田最高!
Why should I buy these
- Le Manual 🔥
If Gina had AWD or rwd, it would win. But they’re stuck wanting to keep its heritage . Shame
I am a Honda fanboy and drive a S2K for years. I will pick the GR Corolla all day. Morizo approved. Homologation engine. GR Four. It can drive on track, gravel, mud, rain and snow. People can argue that the FL5 is a second faster on the dry track. How about a wet track? I live in PNW, we have rain and snow 70% of the year. Other than the bigger storage space and legroom there is absolutely no way the FL5 can be faster or better in this kind of weather.
I don’t understand why CTR is compared with GR Corolla. Different price range, CTR is much rarer and much better in performance, Corolla looks crap like a glorified Yaris, etc. CTR is in a different class.
I’d go Type R. I’ve been in new Toyotas and new Hondas, no comparison. Toyotas are stiff, but not in the good communicative way. They also have god-awful interior quality and don’t perform very well. Meanwhile, Honda interior quality punches above its weight, ride quality is nice and smooth, and even with FWD it still outperforms the Corolla in almost everyone’s tests.
The corolla looks better cause I am biased towards to look of rally cars
Thai guys on crack lol the GR does not feel more special then the Type R I’ve driven both type r most definitely! Feels more special. GR AWD is the only advantage and even with that advantage GR still a slower car.
On a well prepped track the CTR wins but the gr wins everywhere else
GR Yaris ❤
Type R because the usefulness of AWD is way overhyped, and the CTR is just a better track car.
I agree that the Civic Type R is the better performer but the GR has the WRC pedigree. No it's not a GR Yaris but it has enough. Silly but that does it for me.
The FL5 Type R is special in a way that the GRC will never be. It’s in another league tbh.
If Toyota had done something special with the interior of the GRC like Honda did, it would be infinitely more special. Even the STI had a cool red glowing STI emblem near the shifter.. I love my GRC but the interior is a major let down.
@@culley65 Yeah Toyota really dropped the ball on the GRC interior. I still really like the GRC, I was between that and the FL5 for myself. I chose the FL5 as it was the more compelling car in many ways for me. I also hated the seat height in the GRC and I have heard many others say the same, like you’re sitting on top of the car.
I don't like either. But if i had to choose id get the gr
The one with AWD
Snowy place (which I live in)? Corolla.
Everything else? Civic.
Also the Corolla is a bit too small for me vs the Civic.
true, but FWD with snow tires and common sense driving is good enough in most snow environments (in the city).
lol if you can't handle 2WD in snow, you can't drive 😂 (there is a thing called spiked tires, try them out...will change your life)
@@fortheloveofnoise9298 2wd still gets smoked by AWD in everything other than dry conditions (at least with these cars at oem power).
Debate over GR has a manual hand brake 😮
WOuld take the WRX over both of these. No dealer markups, easier to find, AWD, offers an automatic to those who want one, excellent value, tidier small town and city street proportions, and no finance fraud like with Toyota's finance division.
Answer: Integra Type S
lol no, that is for people afraid to push the car to the limit, the Honda Type R all the way (Type S has a better exterior though)
@fortheloveofnoise9298 better interior too.
If it had SH-AWD, it would be the undisputed king 4 real
That is not the Question my friend
Other than a 0 to 60 Type R it's not even close 3 cylinders, economy cabin clearly type r doesn't need AWD. Cute comparison though
Civic si Vs Prius Hybrid
No wrong choice here
The Toyota looks cheap and tacked together. Interior has a cheaper feel. The rear diff over-heats, the shifter isn't anywhere near as good as the Civic. I'm a hard core Toyota fan but that was in the 80s and 90s when they designed great cars like the Supra, MR2 and the Hilux 4x4 pickup trucks.
Type R looks wayyy better
A Cupra Born
No hand break on type R so that’s a no go
Current interior on the GR is a non-starter. You dont even get a center arm rest.
Type R is king
Nope I don’t agree with you I test both cars and I went with type R because of comfort especially because is going to be my daily and the gr doesn’t have an arm rest with in my opinion very important and necessary for those long trips
You have an accent like Borat
The Type R interior is about as enticing as Ronald McDonald's big red clown shoes.
Neither. Because both or overpriced. I bought an fk8
If probably go for the gonna but i can't stand the red interior, ha ha. Not for me.
Skip to 15:30 that’s your answer
Talks trash about the looks of the FK8 and shows a pic of it and looks badass lol.
Fwiw, the Corrolla is about as edgy of a design too minus the FK8's wing.
GR Corolla. Type R looks like 🤢 🤮
I like the front end of the type r, but the back end looks like an suv, and it's so long!
The type r looks like a bar of imperial leather soap, it’s so flat and shapeless.
Waste of money for the price might as well get a faster more updated Tesla or m2
Civic type r electronic brake 👎.. gr corolla. Awd and hand break 👍 more hot hatchback look 👀 civic .. not.. 😅 good choice 👍
Couldn't you afford a type R? Not able to get an allocation?
Answer: excellent video but I would buy neither one, I went electric with my Mini Cooper.
Elantra N easy.
Hideous
Only people that want a knock off are people that can't afford a type r.
Elantra N if you are leasing, Honda Type R if you are buying.
@@justinhale2160or maybe they can't drive stick
Toyota>Honda
Civic is overpriced
Oh please, if you think that you don't know how good the car really is
@@van_der_lindeDA at MSRP it is ok. Actual sale price (10-20K over, f these dealers) is too much as it puts you in BMW M340i territory
@MrTresto personally would rather own the FL5 than the 340i that I see at every second corner....thats my personal opinion...south africa the FL5 is 950 000 rand and the 340i is 1.3 million rand...pretty big difference
Having said that the FL5 and corolla GR here are close to identical costing....why on earth would I buy a corolla, unless I live in snow.
@MrTresto type r is quicker around the track then a 340i. Plus BMW drops like a rock in depreciation.
@@van_der_lindeDAIt isn't at MSRP, it is when dealers mark it up.
