Boudoir outfits and lingerie have changed a lot through the history of fashion. So what makes for the best Valentine's Day lingerie, in any era? I dove into the history of underwear to find out, and it turns out that whether you're in loose, shapeless Medieval shifts, Victorian corsets, delicate Edwardian undergarments, or modern lingerie, it's the same things that make for the best romantic outfits. Historical underwear was a lot simpler in the Medieval and baroque periods, but there was still subtle variation. Medieval undergarments was usually made of linen, and finely woven bright white linen was the most attractive because it was costly, high-quality, and a little see-through! Noble ladies sometimes wore silk nightgowns too, which were considered attractive for the same reasons, Medieval romances talk about how beautiful these shifts and chemises are, so it's easy to see how these are a staple of the historty of romance. Moving onwards, we start to see a little more decoration, like the lace or blackwork embroidery on Elizabethan shirts, but this is usually at the collar and cuffs where it can be seen when you're fully dressed.
But the history of lingerie takes a turn when it comes to baroque clothing. A huge number of English court ladies were painted by the famous artist Peter Lely in what look like romantic fantasy costumes, but they're actually bedroom outfits! These ladies wear chemises and robes, a staple of baroque clothing worn only in private, when getting ready for bed. Having their portraits painted in fancy silk boudoir outfits was like a modern celebrity doing a photoshoot in fancy lingerie! Everything from stockings to garters was a subject of the vintage romantic imagination in the 18th century, and we have plenty of folk songs and cartoons about people describing how attractive these underpinnings are.
It wasn't just seeing someone in their underwear that was exciting, though. In the 19th century, as fashion became more ornate and more affordable, some corsets became so colorful they'd put modern lingerie to shame! Lingerie design had a huge amount of variation, and antique corset history is full of decorative designs to contrast with plain cotton lingerie for everyday wear. Even the chemise, the most basic of Victorian undergarments, got more and more decorated, with lace and ribbons available. It's like the reverse of how we see garter belts : Today, they're decorative and very exciting, but vintage garter belts could actually be as boring as granny panties! Vintage garters were everyday items, not necessarily made to be attractive, even though plenty of vintage lingerie could be romantic and decorative.
So what can fashion history teach us, from looking at all these foundation garments? A few things have stayed true about lingerie through fashion's evolution. The most attractive lingerie is what stands out, whether it's because of being high-quality or expensive, because it's colorful or decorative, or simply because it's an outfit only seen in the boudoir. So whether you like your underwear colorful or plain, bustiers or chemises or garter belts, vintage lingerie or modern, historical costuming is happy to help you choose your outfit for Valentine's Day.

When I was around 19, I had suffered for 3 years with constant UTIs, I practically lived on antibiotics and advil. Finally my doctor ordered a series of tests to see why I was living in a state of constant UTI
Turns out, I was allergic to the dyes in panty hose, these were not ordinary UTIs, but allergic reactions. He told me, "stop wearing panty hose", and I asked him, "what do I wear under my dresses then?"
His answer floored me, 'have you never heard of a garter belt and stockings?"

And think about the modern perception of "sexy" in the media. It often *is* sleazy, not romantic (in fact to get romantic it is often set in non-modern contexts, like period dramas). So plastic, and being uncomfortable, and synthetic all kinds of fits that right? Maybe the fabrics, textures, and smells are what's caused that link between sexy/sleazy.

In the 90's, I worked in construction, as a sprinklerfitter. It was .very. hard work, and the cutting oil stained my nails black. I started getting acrylic nails to cover the stains, and to make myself feel more feminine. Because of if that feeling, I also took to wearing very fancy lace undergarments underneath my work clothes. IF I told anyone, they thought it was because I was doing some "adventuring" during work hours. This infuriated me. I wrote pretty things just for me, to remind myself that I was, in fact, still a pretty thing, even though I did very hard work. 😊

When i was a very young barely-a-woman in the mid and late1960's we had stockings held up with a garter belt. My grandmother worked in one of Houston's bigger department stores and gifted me with what she referred to as 'pants hose'. Yes, stockings and pants combined into what we now know as pantyhose. To Grandma 'pants' were the undergarment now known as panties. I still dislike the term 'panties' as I imagine some guy who resembles the old man on the front of Jethro Tull's Aqualung album leering as he spoke of that garment. Our childhood dance teachers told out mothers to get us some bikini pants for ballet recitals since they didn't droop out from beneath our leotard and costume.Time marched on and suspended hosiery became defunct as it was deemed easier to encase ones legs and nether region in a one-piece garment rather like a sausage casing and just as comfortable. To make a long story short, as a 67 year old celibate woman, I find I still prefer the comfort of two separate stockings held up by a garter belt. No one but me sees what's under my dress but I still feel comfortable and feminine. So, as my mother told me, wear the pretty lingerie just for myself even if no one else would see it. Feeling pretty is important. I may even all some more lace and embroidery to my linen shifts.

I am a fellow hater of the word "panties". It's a dreadful word. There's knickers which is fairly neutral or the Australian slang, "grundies".
While I've given up on stockings and their conjoined successors, I do consider stockings and a garter belt or, as it is called in some places, a suspender belt, to be the more comfortable version, not least because you aren't trying to pull up two garments together after relieving yourself. I'm very good at putting holes in the conjoined stockings.

I haven't finished one of the 10 projects that I've started for it, let alone the five cooking videos I still need to edit, which got backburned because of the ten sewing projects I have yet to finish. See, I get ducks in a row to start a project then the squirrels tell me that the next project needs to get started. Ducks, squirrels, ducks, squirrels, rinse and repeat. All metaphorically, of course.

When I was in my first serious relationship, I decided to put some effort into lingerie to be seen, but the stuff that was nice was prohibitively expensive, and the less-expensive stuff was either not to my taste or poorly made. I gave up after trying a handful of things. These days, I try to put a little bit of effort into cute everyday bras (currently Curvy Kate's Victory balconettes) and stick with comfy, cotton bikini briefs in colours I like. I don't have the time, effort, or budget to buy fancy modern lingerie.
That said, I have the supplies to make a couple of full slips out of very slinky rayon. Maybe not the sexiest thing these days, but I really, really like them. I just need to find the time to make them. And stop being too scared to cut the fabric.

I'm stumped on a more elegant way to mention Shirley McClaine in "Irma la Douce" without it seeming like calling attention to you personally having green stockings, I really did think of it as something that had a lot of jokes and things that are probably more oddball comedy today than saucy, like it did when I first saw it. The thing about Irma is, she's a popular Parisian sex worker with a strong preference for green, and a tiny lapdog who somehow keeps acquiring bottles of champagne, because this is a 1963 Billy Wilder film that also stars Jack Lemon as a policeman who will eventually jump a plot shark in a story that depends on your expectation and enjoyment of shark jumping-but that's another story. See, it's considered a romantic comedy but I somehow got the idea as a kid (seeing it mid-1990s) that it would have been considered fairly raunchy, but a few years later I saw "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," which only came out 3 years later, has twice as many hijinks to keep track of and the poster has Mad Magazine energy. Farce is an invitation to humanize previous generations and remind us that we aren't really that different at all, it all comes down to underwear eventually!

Of COURSE I wanted to try it.
But I was pretty sure Mom wouldn't be happy about me bedazzling my tshirt - especially if the design turned out lopsided or something... I wasn't wearing one of my play outside and get dirty outfits....
But my panties! No one sees my panties!
So I went to the washroom, took off my panties, put my pants back on, bedazzled the front of my panties where they print designs on younger kids panties to make it easy to tell where the front is... admired my handiwork with my friend, noting that my heart was kinda lopsided, but it probably turned out better than the star would have...
Then went back to the washroom, and put my bedazzled panties back on.
Neither of our mothers was impressed with my absolutely genius solution... they even seemed kind of mad? But wouldn't explain WHY it mattered when no one was going to see....

a lot of people like to think people didn't talk about certain topics or possibly even ENGAGED in the realization of them in the days way back then... and they clearly have not actually listened to any folk song. the art of telling a story through euphemisms is truly at it's rediscovery in the recent internet years

I do have an actual annoying younger sibling, but he's not quite this good at snark 😅

So I've done some work on Medieval Irish clothing and they don't say much with women's undergarments. With men they would wear linen braies that would have ties to wool stockings. Then this would be cover by a large linen shirt called Leine and would have long poofy sleeves not unlike a chemises. Most women would have a linen chemise that was similarly shaped like the men and was generally visible. Most pictures shows women fully wrapped up in a cloak with not visual indication on what they dressed as.
There is however one interesting account by a Spanish sailor during the 1500s where he shipwrecked in a remote area of Ireland on his travels to Denmark. There he claims that all the women walked around topless in the open. He made very detail accounts of the various chests he saw and held as he claim is was perfectly find to do that there. This is the only account we have of this and if it was true this wasn't the norm in most of Ireland. Though there is a 16th century picture of an Irish woman fully wrapped in a cloak but you can see one of her shoulders is bare. Not definitive evidence but a possibility.

Sailors are definitely known for the veracity of their accounts when it comes to topless women 🤣

From a climate perspective, I’d say it’s unlikely to be true outside of certain contexts such as the bathhouse.

I have seen content creators who review bras wear the bra over a leotard/bodysuit to show how it looks/fits. You could also use a mannekin. No reason to appear in public in your bra & panties 😊

Lancelot was not the "pure of heart" Knight of the Round Table. He cuckolded King Arthur with Guinevere. It was his son, Galahad, who was the pure one.

This episode reminded me to pick up my copy of 'The Pearl', it's tawdry, saucy and was written anonymously in the Victorian era. Your obsession with thirsty songs reminded me I have a love affair with the naughty limerick, they're fun to try and sing without bursting out laughing or blushing!
    Great vid!
    Cheers doll

hey! my obsession with folk music is not limited to thirsty songs, I just find it really funny that modern people don't always realize that's what they are.
