  • In this week's video we are trying Wetherspoons for the first time! Is it worth it? Let's find out as we review their Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner!
    Wetherspoons is one of the biggest and most popular pub chains in the UK, so we had to try it out. We start the day at JJ Moon's in London with tea and coffee and a variety of breakfast dishes. We try a traditional Fry Up, Eggs Benedict, and a tasty Breakfast Muffin.
    A few hours later we return for drinks and more food. This time we try beers and cocktails, some British pub classics (Breaded Scampi and chips) and some strange items like a Jackfruit Bao Bun and a Japanese Katsu Chicken Curry. Once our bellies are full we end with more drinks since Wetherspoons serves an abundance of them, so we get some refreshing ciders.
    Let us know if we should do more food and restaurant reviews like this.
    And most importantly, what do you think of Wetherspoons?

    We always love trying out popular restaurant chains, and this week at Wetherpoons it was no different. Let us know in the comments what you usually eat there! Are there any other UK pub chains we should try out? We actually heard about the Wetherspoons game and we might play it in a future video, since it looks like it would be a lot of fun. Thanks so much for watching! In our next video we will be eating UK fast food for 24h so don't miss that! 😊 - Brandon & Anja

      The way Spoons fit within the pub grub market it's similar to how Greggs fit into the pastry shop market. Cheap, fast, consistent, wide enough food/drink selection to keep most people in a group happy and decent enough quality that it isn't an issue. Plus there are enough that no-matter where you are going there will be one local to you.
      We all know it's not the best place to eat, but the same could be said for a lot of chain resturants and fast food places. It fills it's niche pretty well.

    one of the most honest reviews where you just say if food is good or bad. Most of youtubers over exaggerate everything so it was pleasant to watch as i could see in you a positive attitude. Now, 2 things:
    1) the bao you had you said it wasn't good, I think it just stayed too long in the microwave, i had some in the past and they were good.
    2) about ciders, they sometimes have fresh ones, you see them in the cardboard boxes on the top of the fridge and usually they are nicer

    • @wherearewe-yt
      @wherearewe-yt  Před 27 dny +1

      Thanks! We always try to be as honest as possible when reviewing food, without trying to be TOO negative. No one wants to have someone talking smack about their favorite foods. Everyone has their own tastes.
      You're right about the bao bun. It was most definitely over microwaved. Someone else told us they get the buns sometimes as well, and that they've always been nice and soft.
      We'll have to try one of the fresh ciders next time!

    I spend a lot of time in various Wetherspoon pubs. I would not choose them for a special occasion or a memorable meal out, but the foods cheap, dependable and perfectly OK from time to time. I think the spicy meat feast 11 inch pizza is one of their best dishes. But the other advantages are, decently priced drinks, good toilets, strong free WiFi, and plenty of space to chill and kill time wherever you happen to be. Well done Sir Tim Martin!

      People who rag on spoons are usually just entirely uninformed. They often just enjoy paying more for lower quality, badly prepared food from other chains.
      There are a scant few exceptions, but the vast majority of chain pub kitchens run in the same way. Frozen foods, hot holds, industrial microwaves/ovens, grills and fryers.
      I spent many years in the trade, spoons by far had the tightest standards, best pay, best opportunities and best training across the board. It's not even close. 🤷🏽‍♂️

    Another thing i like about Spoons (and some other chain pubs, but not many) is the inclusion of a drinks menu. Most pubs just expect you to know exactly what you want and be happy with whatever price they surprise you with at the till. Yeah, you can just ask, but it's awkward if you're feeling indecisive (as i often am) and the bar's busy, server doesn't wanna spend 10 mins going through every drink available with you 😅

    • @wherearewe-yt

      Totally agree! So many bars often don't have a drink menu that is easily visible and since we are on a budget that can be a bit annoying sometimes. We don't like bad surprises, either, where we realize we just ordered a £10 drink. The drink menu at Wetherspoons is super transparent and you can even check the prices on the app before you go there.

    The word is derived from the Proto-Germanic *bakkon, meaning "back meat". Meat from other animals, such as beef, lamb, chicken, goat, or turkey, may also be cut, cured, or otherwise prepared to resemble bacon, and may even be referred to as, for example, "turkey bacon".
    so yes canadian bacon and english bacon is the real bacon. we use back meat as opposed to belly which Americans use.

    There’s a pretty good burger meal in Wetherspoons. The buttermilk fried chicken bbq one. It’s about £11-12, and you get a pint. Better than going to McDonald’s and paying about £8 for a worse burger, no onion rings and a soft drink
    p.s. that mango chutney goes really well with gammon, so I’m not surprised it goes well with bacon and sausage
    p.p.s if you see Thatcher’s Haze or Rattler, they’re both good ciders imo

    Glad you enjoyed Wetherspoons! It's a great place for cheap eats, and drinks. I think that the dinners seem to be a little more expensive but portions always smaller. The drinks are always good value, a bottle of Pinot Grigio at a restaurant in London is around £30, it's £12 at Wetherspoons. Great for people on a budget, and don't want loud music and to sit and have a chat with friends (TV shows sports but no volume, music does not play at all). I was at a Wetherspoons on Thursday, Pasta Alfredo with Chicken was quite nice :0)

    Sadly, there is still an acute snobbery over which restaurants are or are not the so called best. In my home city centre we have three Spoons within 1/2 mile of each other and on Saturdays, particularly when my home football team is playing it is always best to order from the app to your table. I meet friends before we go to the game and the cost of having a few (or more lol) drinks with good mates is so available because of Spoons. Snobs can stay out of Spoons and leave us ordinary people to enjoy the basic, but enjoyable food, great priced drinks and good company of friends.

  • @ddlee84
    @ddlee84 Před 4 dny

    I have a love hate relationship with Weatherspoons, you can't deny that they are value for money as drinks and food are cheap in comparison to other restaurants, cafes and pubs. But they are also a big par of why the old style British pubs are closing. Spoons are cheap because they can afford to buy in bulk which is why the menus are almost identical whereever you go in the UK(with the exception of the odd regional difference), your local pub cannot do that and in most cases are forced to buy their beer, larger and ale from the brewery who owns the building at massively inflated prices when the brewery then sells the same beer to places like spoons at half the cost. I've seen that happen to a pub near me, where the landlord explained his costings just purely to the few of us that were in the pub because he was greatful we were there. He explained that the brewery would charge him say £200 a keg which you get around 88 pints out of(maybe less for foam up if the lines aren't perfect). So if you got the full 88 pints you would need to sell at £2.27 per pint just to break even on the keg alone, not including the overheads of the pub(power, staff,rent and heating etc) So you are already over what spoons are charging before you factor in the rest of your overheads and then a profit margin so you can actually make money that is why in the standard local you can see pints at £6.50 per. That is the main part of the hate side of my relationsip with Wetherspoons(other than ther owner who is a colossal berk) but I won't ever say they should all be closed or anything like that because they do help people go out and have a good time on a budget. The brewaries are the bigger villains by selling cheap to big old conglomerate Weatherspoons while gaining maximum profit from the landlords who don't have a choice but to get the kegs from them.

    What you Canadians call bacon is probably more akin to our "streaky" bacon, made from pork belly, so has a lot of streaks of fat (hence "streaky bacon") and also crisps up very nicely. What you were eating here is what we call "back" bacon, made from pork loin, and is much leaner with just a bit of fat around the edges. The hash brown is a fairly recent addition to British breakfasts, so isn't really a traditional component.
    I'm from Scotland, and a traditional Scottish breakfast is very similar to the English version, with a few exceptions. Rather than hash browns, we usually have potato scones, or tattie scones as we refer to them, tattie being a Scots term for potato, We also have Lorne sausage, or square sausage as it's more commonly referred to in Scotland, we still include link sausages, the Lorne sausage is an added bonus. In addition, a Scots breakfast can often include sliced haggis, sometimes instead of black pudding, but sometimes as well as.
    If you are ever in Scotland, you should try a Scottish breakfast just to see how you compare it to the English breakfast. You definitely need to try Lorne sausage, as it's probably one of the top 5 foods that ex-pat Scots miss when they move abroad. You can also try our famous, or maybe infamous, deep fried Mars Bar, basically a Mars Bar dipped in batter then deep fried.

      I didn’t work there specifically very often. I was mostly based in the Spoons in Kingsbury but I got sent all over North West London as relief staff. It was usually a pretty quiet job. I liked the midweek afternoon shifts. The bonuses were good. I’d usually be taking home a couple of crates of booze each month and the manager would let us buy spirits at wholesale prices.

    My opinion is Wetherspoons will never blow your mind but the food isn't bad either, its just average. It is good value for money though. Can go there for cheap and cheerfull meal.
    Edit: I don't drink very often and I'm not a beer drinker so if I do drink its usually cider. Quite like Magners and I've found that fruit flavour ciders are quite good and aren't as sweet as you would expect, last time I went I had a blood orange cider and that was nice.

    While the bao buns themselves should have been steamed, what did you think of the jackfruit filling? There was only a scant mention of the sauce, with the main focus being on the crunchy buns.

    • @wherearewe-yt
      @wherearewe-yt  Před měsícem

      The buns kind of ruined it all! The filling was not bad, but for the price, there wasn't enough. For over £5, it's hard to justify. Especially when you consider that's more than we made for most of our breakfast items, which were much better.
      We lived in Asia for a few years, so we've had plenty of steamed buns in the past. I suppose that makes us harsher critics. Haha.

      @@wherearewe-yt living in Asia would definitely give you a different perspective on quality. I'm more into the filling than the buns, as jackfruit is such a versatile fruit. I wouldn't pay over £5 for them, when there are many Asian eateries serving better!

    i just watched, and american family, go to what is trying to be a british pub in america, they got fish and chips i think, a sunday roast, i think they got english breakfast, i cant remeber the 4th dish, each dish was around 30 dollars, thats cost them over 120 dollars without a drink, but i get why the price is so high, because they had lamb for sunday roast, its not easy meat to get in US, everything else was traditional, down to baked beans and stuff, so the import duties must be high, The food did look good, and they were english people even down to the server, so they know what they are doing,
    but you cant replicate the english pub, the pub culture, what it means, the community of it, after work pint, whether yu in builders shorts, or you suit from the office, it makes no difference, or whether your a millionaire or someone living pay day to pay, everyone is equal, and welcome
