They're about a 1/3 smaller too. You need to have a 7% ABV bottle in order to drink the same amount of alcohol as an average strength cask ale pint

My experience of spoons (extensive) is the gut ruining combo of about 8 pints before someone inevitably starts coming back with trays of jaegerbombs and then everyone locks into double vodka red bulls until its time to stagger into a reallllly inhospitable looking club or late night bar.
Then wake up fully clothed in bed with your shoes on feeling like you got flashbanged down town around 4am and teleported there in the few seconds of disorientation....burping red bull fumes.

I used to live in the UK during college and hate to admit I miss spoons. Love that damn place; the app ordering to your table is awesome too. They basically take over places that are independent and on deaths door. So you get some really nice buildings/establishment that become weatherspoons, Greene king also do this
Greene King, Taylors and Nicholsons are miles better than a Spoons. You can't beat a good Free House pub, they are still around, but have been in rapid decline since the mid 2000s.

Wetherspoons don't water down their drinks. You get what you pay for, literally. If you order a gin and tonic, you get 25mm of gin (a single measure) and some tonic. If you go to independent pubs and bars they may be more liberal with their measures, but not always. The beers are anywhere from 3.5% to about 5.5% abv which is pretty standard in both the UK and the US. It depends which one you get. The spirts in Wetherspoons are anywhere from about 37% to 45%, depending on which one you get.

The plague was carried over on flea-ridden rats from China. It entered the merchant ports of southern and Eastern Europe first. It took about 4 or 5 years to then travel across Europe and reach the UK.

The UK has some of the best drinking culture full stop. Yes it can be tacky/sad but it can also be hilarious and rewarding, the culture is shared across all ages and backgrounds. If you're not having fun and good banter in a UK city pub you're likely the problem.
