    Thanks so much for making this video! It's so useful to see these two pedals compared and see them in action. I feel like the technology isn't quite there yet to allow these pedals to accurately sustain a variety of sounds. The GC Plus fared much better with the synth tones whereas the EHX better reproduced the string and piano sounds. The GC Plus also had that weird tremolo effect on some tones which could be annoying. I hope both companies work to improve the pedals and one day there'll be a product that works seamlessly with guitar, synth and whatever else you could want.

    SE+ is the clear winner for me. The Plus sample loops were so audible, possibly because they're just way too short. Not realistic to expect good results on a PWM synth sound or sax with vibrato like that. Thanks for the comparison, very revealing!

    such a carefully prepared review, maybe one of the best I've seen on anything relating pedals and audio controlling in general for such purposes. I am one of those who actually got amazed that you indeed care about visualizing the oscillator and the spectrum for (not only a better but a) true understanding of what's happening. just a great great job, I like to see in the comments that generally the people appreciates this because I've been seeing really many reviews and this is pretty unique.
    regarding the competition: PLUS was a great idea with the design and the feeling and the organicity of feeling like a piano pedal in the guitar. however, in the end we speak about sound. I think that the sound test shows how much better is SUPEREGO+ on the way it replicates the signal, no matter what timbre you might be sending. and there are many aspects of layer controlling that Superego+ does in a way quite much better as well. I think that PLUS could eventually become a real competitor if it keeps the idea of the design and just really catches the quality of superego+. For now (and for the price), PLUS looks quite much like relying slightly too much in being fancy, being intuitively functional in terms of mechanic (well it's not a minor thing that it indeed looks like a piano pedal, that's something for me at least) and being more compact.
    Superego+ is just the clear winner for me (at least for now)
    I understand that you'd prevent yourself from taking a position, but from what I understand from you as someone really paying attention to detail in the soundl, the components, the processes involved, the functionality... don't you agree? I'd like to know what's your veredict!

    • @loopop
      @loopop  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks for the comment - I pretty much agree with you... Plus pedal has a better design, SuperEgo+ has more features. Sound wise SuperEgo+ is a bit better IMHO too, but that's really for people to judge based on their preferences, because Plus pedal handled a minority of the sources better

    I have a EHX HOG2, that also does this. Having a resonant filter and all the pitch intervals on board makes a huge difference. You can freeze a sound, and then play the pitch intervals as a sort of synth. Great way of making pads with a mono synth as well. It sometimes has some aliasing issues, but the filter can nicely take care of that. It makes for a really nice screaming resonant filter for guitar, good way to get controlled feedback.
    To make it really shine it needs a reverb or delay after it though.
    When I got it, it was relatively cheap; €360, including a next step expression pedal (that costs €94.00 by itself).

    @PeterJaquesMusic Před 4 lety +2

    nice video, thanks! I think one reason the SuperEgo is changing your synth waveforms is that you have the attack set at 12:00, while on the Plus you have the Rise on 0. If you lower the attack (or leave the pedal engaged long enough for the attack to finish) you might get a better square wave...

    • @loopop

    Hi, I just want to know if it is possible to freeze a bass note pitch shifted to an octave (only one note), (maybe send to another signal path) and play in the original octave on top.
    I need bass notes pedals for my solo guitar arrangements and don't want to go 7 strings (neither the boss oc3) if this is possible somehow.
    I like the superego+ freeze as it is better than the "freeze" pedal itself, but I would like to check if it could pitch shift at the same time or I need another pedal to do so.

    Someone finally put the Plus Pedal through its paces. I'd been wondering how well it stacked up to other pedals or even determining what other pedal it could be compared to (I was thinking it was the Freeze pedal). In my eyes, the Superego+ seems to have more bang for the buck. It also has an Expression pedal input, which you might be able to use as the foot-pedal feature for sustain the way it's used with Plus Pedal.
    It also seemed like from a synth perspective, both pedals had limited use on basic forms like sine or square & seemed more effective with multiple notes. I wonder if a pluck synth sound might have had better variation with those pedals over sine or square?

    Around 16:00 where you talk about the tremolo-ish sound from the Plus Pedal. Could it be the caused by the attack and release settings? Or does it seem more like an inherent thing to the Plus Pedal?

    • @stagnatic
      @stagnatic Před 3 lety

      The tremolo-ish sound from the Plus has to do with when you press down the pedal. The makers of the Plus state that you need to wait 500 ms from when you strike a note (I’m a guitarist) to get a smooth sound. It’s actually not so easy to do, and depending on when you press the pedal, the trem-ish ness can be pretty harsh. I do, however love the Plus’s form factor. Considering swapping for the SuperEgo, but may keep the Plus.

    I know this video is 2 years old but I would have loved to hear the saxophone sound with no vibrato hahahaha otherwise excellent demonstration!

    The Plus is a very posh device. Built very nicely

      It is very heavy and feels like a Bentley versus all other pedals. I wish they would make a standard synth sustain version of it.

    Three years later, TC Electronic manages to singlehandedly 'invent' the 'freeze' pedal category with their Infinite Sample Sustainer....

    Only the Plus samples audio. SuperEgo works like a synth approximating the input tone somehow. Thats why Plus warbles sometimes looping the sample where SuperEgo doesnt.

    the plus pedal needs a little more work. That vibrato issue is bad, especially on those low cellos. It may have been built more for guitar, because those demos sound great. I also think that vibrato inputs violate the concept of a static pad when you have modulation or filter sweeping. what is the sampler supposed to grab? and that little modulated slice will then affect the sound like a bad timed loop out of synch with the initial modulation. So modulation pedals go AFTER these guys is what i'm thinking. (you may have said that at the start, and you proved it)

      agreed. i think this is why i prefer the superego+ overall. it has tremolo you can dial in, or turn off, or swap for chorus, vibrato, flange, filter, pitch...

    My vote goes to the Gamechanger. Partly because I just bought one and partly because of empirical scientific opinion.

    sounds like there is still a big gap of whats technically possible and what is implemented in these pedals. It sounds like the plus pedal is doing some kind of of looping point detection whereas EHX does some kind of phase vocoder technique (leading to a lot of artifacts).
    Maybe have a look at some python script I did a couple of years ago and compare the quality with what you get from these pedals. nbviewer.jupyter.org/github/faroit/pyfreeze/blob/master/freeze_demo.ipynb

    An interesting kettle of possibilities, great for the bedroom and studio, but live?
    Gotta say , I find it one of those ironies that when duos or trios rely on tech to build layers and fill space, it's an unwelcome distraction from one of few focal points.In a larger group, it dosen't matter if a member is completely absorbed, not really "present'. Maybe it's just me, and it depends much on the style of music.They do offer some more straightforward but applications . What works well in one environment dosen't necessarily work in another.Food for thought.
