The Rare, Unreleased Graphics Card.. That I Found On Ebay!

- The GTX 780 Ti Lightning, unlike the standard 780 lightning was never publicly released. MSI made only 12 of them and they were only sent out to overclockers after Nvidia told them they couldn't modify the voltage spec.
But somehow, and in what must have been the luckiest experience of my life I found one on ebay for just £110. So let's take a look at it!
Thanks for watching :)
Congrats man this is awesome!
OzTalksHW don't fall behind. Go find a rare gpu hahaha
Hi love ya content
Oz yuna
You all probably dont give a shit but does anybody know a method to log back into an Instagram account??
I somehow forgot my account password. I love any assistance you can give me!
@Aarav Rowen Instablaster :)
What a great find! Hope you can get it stable with a stronger PSU.
When I ran my 780ti I paired that with an 850 watt corsair Ax power supply
darkwind9000 waaaat
darkwind9000 i have this 780ti lightning and i've paired it with a 650w gold.
that psu is plenty. that system will draw about 400w max when gaming.
Ya it's probly the BIO's that's F'ed ... Deff not the PSU dont waste your time
So you were that guy on reddit
Top Hat Shrek i was wondering about that too
I was looking for this comment
Saw the video thumbnail and immediately knew it was his post!
www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/905gmm/found_this_on_ebay_the_rare_780ti_lightning_1_of/
i came looking for this comment as well
I saw that post but didn't realize it was you who got this card. Very jealous, and can't wait to see what you can do with it!
Hilarious. I had one of the other 780Ti Lightnings in my possession between ca. 2014 and 2016. I also purchased it off eBay from the ukrainian overclocker T0lsty for a whopping 750€ + taxes and imported it to Germany. He stated he didn't wanna kill it by LN2 OCing as he heard from the other OCers that the card would die at more than 1,35V voltage at load - this is why MSI later redesigned the PCB for a 2nd iteration of the 780Ti Lightning called the MOA edition. 26 of those were made I believe. I had one of the original 12 though, complete still with the protective foil on the back. The funny part is that I, being a poor college student first and GPU collector and extreme overclocker second, I used the card as a daily in my gaming rig! I played tons of BF3 and Watchdogs on it and it never let me down. I got a waterblock on it and could overclock it to about 1500MHz iirc. I also made some posts about it on reddit and the like but honestly, no one cared about it. I sold the card with my 150 piece GPU collection to the Heinz Nixdorf museum in Germany which is the largest computer museum in the world and afaik, the card is still in their inventory and working 100%. Of course I can provide you with proof as I have tons of old pictures of the card. Also, I'm sure I can provide more in depth information as I was an active member of the extreme overclocking scene at the time and of course had the privilege of owning my card for over two years.
Respect! Got a decent 780Ti and think my daily OC of 1250MHz was the hotness...
probably wont get a response, but how much did you get for all of your gpu's that you sold?
@@Shaman22333 Hey, sorry for the late answer, it was about 3000€ which I was happy with (hobby financed itself, pretty rare :D)
Almost, it actually was given away in an pre event before the moa, and then the redesigned version were given out on the moa. In the pre-event 2 of them were given to the 12 contestants, one of wich was a friend of mine rbuass long time ago. Then, later on, when he went to the moa 5 of the redesigned one were given out to each of the 6 contestants, wich he won actually lol. So in total, it was 24 of the v1 and then more 30 of the v2 were on market
I had one of the prizes in one of those competition given out to me from faster benchmarker like maaaany years ago, only 1 were made and in a roberry was stollen from me but i stleast hae still some footages on my channel with it lol. Crazy damn great overclocker, that palit gtx570 bf3 oc edition
Personally not many card seem cool compared to my AMD Fury Tri-X....But that is one awesome card. I remember the post on reddit, as I saw the listing an wondered if it was the same one that showed up on there.
Brilliant FInd.
You should try watercooling it and unlocking it, much cooler
Grant Gibson: Undervolted already, never goes above 60C and the fans virtually never spin on it.
Budget-Builds Official impressive, ngl. Have you tried unlocking it yet?
Grant Gibson: Unfortunately no dice on this model.
Budget-Builds Official Did you copy my channel name?
if we lived in the same country, I'd be right over with my 800W PSU for ya, it's severely underutilized in my system... I've only got a 750Ti...
Mabye all those extra caps, net you a stable overclock ? My PCI lanes knock out at 90-120w.
You could've got a 770 and a worse psu D:
that's not a good idea really... PSU's are designed to work optimally at 50-85% (wattage) load, under utilizing it can actually lead to shorter lifespan, this mainly applies to lower quality ones tho...
honoka nice
I OC my GTX770 with Corsair VS450W and i5 35570@4.1GHz. It'a a OVERKILL
Oh man, I know you're so excited for this one, what an awesome find! Glad to hear you've got MSI in touch with you, sounds like you've got all the support you could possibly get so hope the PSU helps get you through the tests!
Nice find! This card is not something you see every day. At first I thought it might be a fake because of the £110 price point, but when you showed the Ebay screenshot I saw it was listed as broken. Maybe that is why it is so cheap. If you get lucky and it has an easy fix like the R9 290 that would be awesome!
Check the BIOS number and try using LN2 BIOS. The latter just increases power limit, not voltage outright, so it should be safe, as long as it was not modded.
Hey you seem pretty tech savy mind helping me out with my problem or giving me advice at least? It's about a GPU
Ok, I'll try. What's wrong?
Hey do you think i my antec vp450 is going to be enough for gtx 770?
RandomTutorialsAndGamingBy Sorry it is too weak. The wattage should be OK, but it has a huge drawback - dual 12V rail. This means that if you connected your cables wrong the maximum power capabilities will be cut in half.
store.antec.com/eu/vpseries/vp450.html#accordion1 (look into additional information)
It should be one rail for CPU connectors (ATX and EPS) and second one for PCI-E. GPU gets most power from PCI-E 6 or 8 connectors, but some (up to 75W) from the PCI-E slot itself. Which is powered from the ATX connector, same as CPU. So CPU + 75W in your case should be below 180W, your GPU also for safety should be below 180W. And GTX 770 is 230W
And if that wasn't enough, you lack necessary connectors. GTX 770 needs 6 and 8 pin PCI-E and you have just one 6 pin. And using an adapter is not a safe idea.
You have to buy something a bit just stronger, but with single 12V line. Also good PSUs convert power from the wall to 12V and then no 5 and 3, so you have full wattage on the 12V that nearly everything runs on. Yours on the other hand says it is 450W, but offers just 360W for 12V and split in half!
Jacek Jagosz Just recently I bought a RX 560 4GB gigabyte version 2 (no need for pci to power it up) anyway I bought it used from eBay, this is the description he put for the card "No BS like you'll see on so many other listings for graphics cards like these
They were used for mining, however my mining rigs stay in a temperature controlled room and I do NOT overclock my cards to their max.
These graphics cards in particular were used to mine Cryptonight and CryptonightV7 algorithms
They have been bios modded for better hashrate and ran very well with 1100 core clock, 1900 memory clock and undervolted to 80%
Those settings kept the cards cool (always below 66°C) and rarely forced the fans to run above 75%
These graphics cards have only been running for 5 months, so they have a lot of life left
The only reason I'm selling is because I have upgraded to bigger cards and I don't currently have room to expand
Buy with confidence from a seller with 100% positive feedback". My problem is the card is clocked at 0 mhz, updated drivers and installed amd settings to try and OC, but the settings don't even work, tried using after burner to OC to stock settings at least and not 0mhz, but it looks like it's locked and can't be over clocked away from 0, the games run horrible, deadass can't even handle mince craft but the funny thing the display still works and the computer still recognises the card except with an error code and exclamation mark under devices settings. I made sure it's not my computer and I have the proper wattage, my saphire rx 260 runs wells and can be clickable on my rig, I can make a video showing my settings and showing what I mean when my card is clocked at 0, if that can help you figure out what's wrong with my card.
Still waiting for the follow-up to this day.
him: what do you do for living?
me: i buy rare GPUs and i dont sleep when its shipping.
Definitely not your PSU. Card is probably borked. That’s unfortunate, as it’s such a rare beast.
Could be drivers aswell tho
Definitely borked, the ebay listing clearly states that the card doesn't work and is for parts only.
For parts and not working doesn't mean it can't be fixed. I made a good bit of money last summer buying GPUs and other PC hardware that were "not working/for parts only", fixing them, and reselling them for considerable profit. Usually with GPUs it was BIOS issues or a loose connection on the board that needed a little re-soldering.
Yea not PSU. Had the same issue with a 980ti. Went way far down that road convinced that a GPU couldn’t be half broken. It worked or it didn’t- and because of load it must be PsU. After replacing hundreds of dollars of parts needlessly - I spent $0.17 on a new choke from Mouser electronics and $4.00 for some low temp reflow solder on Amazon and fixed the damn thing. At that point i already had another though and I sold it.
I did disclose my repair fully. And told the guy I would take it back for any reason for full refund for the next year. Before anyone grumps.
What a lucky find!! And I gotta say- with a card like that it's only right to for it to go into the hands of someone that has the ability to share it with an entire community. I'm glad it found a home with you, and can't wait to see what you have in store for us with it!
ive wanted this card for so long im so jealous u cheeky bugger
Nope.
It's just an old video card lol
starfox 701sm its a collectors gpu
Old doesnt mean anything. Its a beast
So? In 10 years only the person who has it will care. Sell it now while it still has use and value.
People put so much value in worthless junk. lol
Think about how pricy 3dfx cards have become. a Voodoo 3 from 1999 rarely goes for under 30-50€ nowadays, a Voodoo 5 5500 will easily reach 100-150 just for the card alone, and don't even start mentioning the 70 or so prototypes of the Voodoo 5 6000.
Same goes for Geforce 5800 Ultra, Radeon HD 3850 & 4670 AGP or Intel i740. The latest stuff for a platform is rare and pricy, stuff that wasn't even properly released is pricy and it won't go down as more and more of it will break down with age.
"It comes apart pretty easily just like any GPU" Say that to Nvidia. The 2080 ti is ridiculous with over 60 screws and glue.
Just like Apple - nearly 100 screws to fully dismantle it
that was part of the reason i went with an evga xc 2080 ti, super easy to disassemble, i dont remember the exact number but I believe it was 2 front plate screws, 4 cooler mounting screws, and then 2 or 4 others on the corners of the card, all phillips head and tight enough to be secure but not so tight as to make it unremovable
Just like HP but with HP you can't even take the laptop apart
Wow dude!! Huge props, the graphics card looks amazing.
One of the cards on my _"want it at some point it the future if i get an assload of money"_ list.
Nice find! I've never even heard of that card. However the listing on ebay stated that it was for parts and not working. I wish they were wrong but I believe that the card is close to giving up the ghost. But it will still make a nice and rare piece in your collection :)
Hold on...You were the guy who posted this on Reddit?
Edit: YOU ARE, AWESOME!!!!!!
Keanu Chungus
NO YOUR AWESOME
@@theeguy9022 thanks
Wholesome 100
By the power connector specification, the card itself should never draw more than 450W under normal circumstances. Your power supply is very clearly not the issue. Most likely the previous owner overclocked the hard hard and a voltage/speed reduction would be necessary to stabilize it, possibly memory also.
There was also a case some years back where NVIDIA's drivers were damaging 700-series GPUs, so it may be irreparable. who knows!
I had the 780 Lightning (regretting selling it) lol but it was a fantastic card for its time!
What a nice find! I think there could be a need for a custom VBIOS as the stock one is quite outdated and as it was a prototype product, then it could in fact be unstable in its core and using it for heavy loads just shows the obvious, of course I may be wrong and the PSU could be not providing enough power or one or more of the voltage regulators may be broken...
A friend of mine had one of these come into his work in a PC that needed repair.
I also have a non ti 780 Lightning in my GPU collection
Wow. That's an amazing looking card. I agree with you on that color scheme. Can't wait to see the other benchmarks when you get a new PSU!
Bring back the lightning series
Also 150 pounds is a bargain for that card.
And he even payed 120
they do still sell the lightning series cards for nvidia on the gtx 1080 ti... also limited numbers.
There is a GTX 1080 Ti Lightning card...
mad deal for that card!
Even if that wasnt a super rare card, it aint a bad price
Awesome find mate! Shared this 1 with Retro PC Gamers for sure!
We need a update on this? Was it savable? Is it running? Are still trying to fix it?
Also just say RandomGaminginHD if the gpu is beyond repair. You can take of the cooler and put it on a working gtx 780 ti. Just saying.
not fooling anyone due to the back plate and bios switch.
OH MY GOD!!! I saw this on Reddit. Congrats man. When i saw it, it reminded me of that rarest GPUs video you did. I've been watching you for more than a year. You're going strong. Well fricking done
If switching your psu out does not help, possibly try to flash the stock bios again. If that does not work, try switching it to LN2. Looks to be in great condition and should be just fine though!
For testing purposes, just hook up another psu dedicated to the card if you have one laying around.
Jump the necessary pins on the 24 pin connector with some wire or buy a psu starter bridge on ebay for like $5.
Did you see this on PCMR? Or was that you who posted the other day?
Welp you answered it in the video my bad b
I saw it on reddit as well
I saw the post on Reddit the other day. I saw the video and I was like, "huh, some guy on Reddit got one too. How timely." Turned out it was RG in HD on Reddit lol
Yeah, he's the OP. (u/wattledchicken)
Now i'm gonna stalk RGinHD on reddit.
Amazing find! Glad you got it, a card like that belongs with someone who'll appreciate it :) Hope we get to see more of it.
I SAW THIS ON EBAY AND WAS SO CLOSE TO BUYING IT
Absolutely loved my 780 Lightning that I switched to 1070ti year ago. It was really good looking card at the time and was already VR-ready back then. Only the packaging was top notch and premium.
Keep it forever for it's masterpiece
What an amazing find. Congrats! Hoping you'll get a new PSU soon to test this card further. It should be around 1060 6GB performance?
You were that guy on r/PCMR? Small world!
The God Called Mars ahh you mean one of the most popular websites in the world posted on the most common place to post videos in the world, so small.
Hay hay Bay bay Do you know what " small world" means? It's like a celebrity winning the lottery. When I see a random guy on Reddit, one of millions who could have scooped up this card, It's suprising that it would be someone that I know on YT.
The God Called Mars huh small world
I know one is here in Australia as I saw it on Ebay months ago. Was tempted just because they're so rare but I didn't have any real use for it. It sold for a fairly high price too but can't remember exactly how much.
Good find
If it dies, it'll be in the name of science and you'll go down in history.......
If he kills the card, he will go down in history as a MONSTER. I don't think anyone wants that lol
What a lucky find, amazing price even for a regular 780ti I'm happy for you.
I ran 2 x r9 290s (300w each) withe a medium quality 750 watt psu. So if a 650 watt cant handle 1 card, its propobly the cards fault.
soccerzockt its made for extreme oc dude
"Its made for extreme oc dude" the fuck does that even mean. Just because it's made to withstand higher voltages/amperage doesn't mean the card is pushing those voltages/amps at all times. The card only draws what it needs and is told it needs unless forced through software/and or hardware mods. Hes running on the stock bios, which has a lock at 1.175v on the vcore. Jesus H Christ.
Dude, two 8-pin connectors should not allow for more than 375 watt of power consumption total (2x150+75). So a decent 650 watt PSU can not be a issue here, considering that even an OCed R5 1600 is not that power thirsty.
Arismetical 290s are still worth it if you can find them cheap enough imo. I recently replaced mine, but only because it was suffering from hardware defects causing artifacting (it had them from the factory, I was just too lazy to RMA and they went from very rare in the beginning to frequent now), but my 2500K was bottlenecking it at 1080p. That's not saying much since 2500Ks are pretty ancient now, but with a better CPU I have no doubt a 290 would still be capable of 1080/60 at medium to high settings in most modern games. They do run warm, though; mine was a Sapphire Tri-X and it idled around 45c with fans at 20% and was in the high 70s under load with fans between 40-60% (and those Tri-X coolers are fucking loud).
Slosten is it? I only can find it for $200 here. And i can get a 1050ti with it new
Congrats on 200k subscribers. I love you
The card already had issues when you bought it, as it was listed "for parts or broken"
DaGamer but there isn't
Doesn't mean he won't magically get it fixed. Many people get things listed as broken and find a simple fix for a bargain.
@@computethis7128 if it is broken I would still buy it from him. But I would not pay a huge amount for it of course
@A Brit & Whovian Yup, although it's possibly the missing GPU reactor to blame, lots of times cards (especially the 700 series when heavily OC'ed) have issues with the solder connections, which is an extremely easy fix.
They haven't disappeared. Four of them were sent to a modder to build a quad SLI water cooled set up. IIRC it was never finished, but for the life of me I can't remember which modder it was. It was in a Parvum case, though.
You could've just underclocked it to solve the PSU problem.
or test it with Furmark. Furmark is built as a power delivery analysation tool
but then it isnt an accurate benchmark, which is the point of this video
but then it would be just a powerful as a normal 780TI
Thanks for showing rare components in your channel! You are really lucky to get this one. :)

I saw this on reddit first and I’m so glad you were the one that found it! Awesome to see a great review on the product!
Where is the follow up video with the more powerful PSU?!?!
Damn that's rare as hell
So that was you on the PCMR Reddit! XD
Also if you're looking to upgrade your PSU I'd highly recommend a Seasonic 750W Gold Rated one. They're pretty reliable and affordable. Occasionally a GPUs performance can get a bit fudged by the power supply. At least a similar situation happened to me about a year ago.
Very interesting find, hope to see a part 2!
Loved your posts on reddit, So happy to see the review on youtube and I cant acually bleave that it was you who found this card!
06:16 His hands are reversed!
when applying paste to a bare die you should spread it over the entire surface because you need to cool the entire die as the entire die gets hot and you dont want the edges or corners possibly not having paste applied.
I know this is unrelated but I have bought a gtx 1060 3gb for my new build and I am stuck between a i5 8400 or a ryzen 5 1600?
Thicc Ben intel for gaming, ryzen for everything else
2600 for more future proofing and if you overclock it, its better. BUT if you dont plan to overclock or do some editing or just any heavy workload go for the 8400. but my choice is 100% the 2600 because you can also upgrade because the am4 mobo can support 1800x or maybe the ''2700x/2800x'' in the future
Sebas Zoontjes thanks
He never mentioned the 2600...and i'd go intel for purely gaming or ryzen if you do other stuff like editing ect.
even a 1300x will do you just as good
Just saw you posted this on the PCMR subreddit haha. Nice Find!
wattedchicken?
I expected wattedseagull...
Great find , just you should know that the "dot" thermal paste method is far from being optimal on a GPU , since the GPU die is perfectly flat ( unlike cpu ihs ) you need to spread the paste manually otherwise you risk to have hot spots wich is even worst on a GPU . Other than that nice video ; )
Send pictures of the pcb to buildzoid (actually hardcore overclocking)
And maybe send the card to see if he can get it working and crazily overclocked
OMG, please do it!, i would love to se a PCB breakdown and he may tell to you some tricks about power consume....
He would Overclock the hell out of it
I own its sister, the R7970 Lightning BE, one hell of a card. Pulling 30-35 Amps on the 12V line, measured system power consumption under Furmark will easily exceed 400W, you need one beefy PSU and ofc some good cooling and airflow for that puppy. :D This card was also made for liquid nitrogen overclocking tho, a BIOS switch for LN2 is present. It has even got the MSI reactor thingy. Still great for gaming in 2018, even though it can get a bit loud. Vsync and framerate limiters can really help.
EEEEY YOU WERE THE GUY ON /R/PCMR
I don't know why I'm finding these videos so interesting and enjoyable. I'm not really into graphics cards I just buy a new one every 3 years or so and as long as it does what it's supposed to I forget about it. But this this is all so interesting and now has got me looking on ebay trying to spot weird or cards I might get for cheap
It says condition "For parts or not working" in the add and he even explained the issue?
This channel by far is the best there are some good ones out there that review old Tech but this one is spec- tacular
myself i would have put more paste on the gpu
And some quality paste instead of a tube of generic looking stuff.
This might be why the card got fucked...
I saw that post on reddit, I didn't realize it was you! That's a pretty awesome find, I'd probably put it on a wall or something
So uhm, when is the benchmark coming? Did I miss something?
5:43
@@afifnursena I meant the full benchmark
@@icewizzz4800 kay
I'm kinda worried at the lack of TIM you applied. GPU'S need the whole die covered, even just a corner not covered with paste could be detrimental. Over applying the paste is always a good idea. I'd take it back apart to make sure you have full coverage. I learned all this the hard way.
I'm looking for a regular one for the same price yet you find a special unreleased one! FUUUU
His is cooked though.
I had an EVGA 780 ti burn out. Lasted 4ish years. Dope find!
sooooo, what happened to the card?

I bought a inno3d 780ti DHS years ago... I think i'm the only one with a DHS version. I have never seen another out there. Was £600 when i bought it which was a lot more than a standard 780ti at the time, then the 900 series came out a few months later DOH! That being said the card was a beast and smashed every score submitted with the same card.
How much u want for it

more than you can afford pal. MSI.

Two things: 1 you may want to put more paste on the GPU. 2 you absolutely need a Gamers Nexus Modmat!
Love the channel dude!
Put more paste! That's a bare die not a CPU IHS.
Awesome find, the issues you seem to have are common for cards that were pushed hard and gpu gets permanent damage, at least that was the case when I tried to set hwbot records with my hardware. It would crash under high load, above certain temperature (even if it is perfectly reasonable temp for a gpu, like 65c for example.) But still it's so rare that it's cool to own. You could always transplant gpu from a donor card to keep it alive...
Trade you an HD 7970 for it xD
plus a kidney
Maybe my appendix too
Some guy on the internet I wouldn't go trans for that card lol, thats going way too far xd

Glad to see you put half a pea of thermal paste and not half an egg of it like you've done in some other video.
Oh wow congrats on finding one, I really wanted one for myself but it was impossible to find so I had to get satisfied with just the non-Ti MSI N780 Lightning version, which Im currently using, great card, but no Ti sadly. I did a build where I was focusing on using only components with ridiculously overkill build quality, so the N780 Lightning, a Gigabyte Z77X-UP7 motherboard (crazy board, 32 vrm phases, one of a kind) and the best sound card ever made, AuzenTech X-Fi HomeTheater HD, man that one was really hard to find as well, and its all in a SilverStone Fortress FT02, one of the very best cases ever made, if not the best.
Awesome video mate!!! Can't wait for part 2 & 3 & 4 !!! ;P
Hey Phil that card ran Fallout 4 really nice hope to see more on card real soon!
From your explanation of how it uses standard vga to get into desktop but then doesnt work and the thermal paste change fixed that issue, sounds like you could maybe fix it by updating to the newest ROM. Fixed a buddies 780ti that was doing the same thing by updating the ROM.
i didnt know a gpu in my gaming oc was so rare thanks for the vid champ!!!
I believe it's a capacitor issue. I once had broken r7 250x. Boots up fine but always froze when underload. Change all the caps and rock solid until this day
Wow!This is the luckiest person on whole world.Sorry for my english,I'm from Poland.Polska pozdrawia! :P/Greetings from Poland! :P
2:24 - I’m trying to learn about this card and all I can focus on now is you waving and showing your head XD. Good video and nice find though
Nice find bud. I think a PSU upgrade will deffo help, but you might need to check the AMPS over each rail to the card and not so much the total on the 12V rail. I would also double check that the BIOS/Firmware on the card is standard and not been modded by re-installing it after making sure you have the right current/AMPS for it.
Can't wait to see the follow-up. ^_^
Look up "Parvum Lightning". It was built by JR23, who seems to have vanished, and it had 4 of these with WC blocks.
That vrm is so sexy. 16 (doubled) phases.
I wonder if they replaced the mosfets with better ones. On the 780 lightning the mosfets were pretty bad, so it would be nice if they upgraded those on the 780 ti.
But i would presume that they reused the pcb design from the old one.
Heeey!
I read the reddit post but never thought that the OP would be you.
Congrats man, really nice find!
You lucky dog. I hope you're able to get it working fully!
had this crashing issue with my new and stock 780 ghz edition back in the day, had to underclock by 20mhz to get mine stable as it boosted too high out of the box lol (around 1200mhz from memory) was using a 750 watt gold rated Antec True power classic at the time in an OC 4770k rig
