How Larian Studios Wants You to Play Baldur's Gate 3

  • Welcome back to the channel and Baldur's Gate 3. After falling in love with this game in our first run, I decided to try out some of the different play throughs and found something that led me to one of the most dangerous rabbit holes I've been down; trying to make sense of who the main protagonist is actually supposed to be. Equally as important, we quickly find out that the character we created seems to have some sort of nefarious past and thirst for the evils.
That being said, I've documented journey through Act 1 of BG3 uncovering what is probably the most fleshed out and underplayed classes in the world that Larian has created, the Githyanki. From the history of slavery and destruction to the Mindflayers that drive the main plot, every story beat has it's roots settled in Gith lore and I am going to do my best to stay true to it.
This is just the beginning though, and acts 2 & 3 are equally as huge. If you liked this video and want to see more of it please consider dropping any of the CZcams stuff or consider sharing the video. I play and create recreationally, but your feedback means the world to me. Thank you all for watching and I will see you in the next one.
We would love to do more of this in the future so if you enjoy this or know someone who would, please like, comment, subscribe or share. We appreciate you all so much and look forward to hearing from everyone in the future.

20:00 - My first run was Durge. I made it to this scene and then cast speak with dead on Arabella. She told me how she was just afraid and that she was 9.
*Immediately* I was like "Yea... this is too evil for me" and I'm someone who downloaded killable children mod for Fallout. The characters in this game evoke a level of empathy I'm not used to feeling for video game characters.

A Gith Dark Urge was my second playthrough. Lae'zel treated me like I'm a mind-addled Gith, and she took pity on me and tolerates my ignorance. Honestly, I loved it - even if I felt so stupid having to ask another Gith to explain Gith stuff to me.
She was totally a bro as the game progressed, telling me to keep my impulses under control and support my resistance.

It's incredible how much every playthrough can change. I have 8 themes and variations on Tavs/Durges/Origins and not a one has played out the same, even when making similar choices. I haven't played a gith before so this has been interesting to watch. (I have a half-elf, drow, wood elf (durge), high elf, tief (durge), deep gnome, human, and another high elf (Astarion)...)
I made a mistake on my current (horribly cursed, trying for the Jack of All Trades achievement without just dumping all the classes on Minsc or my camp babysitter) run in the Grove that left Rolan, Cal, and Dammon dead, and I'm learning that the consequences of Rolan specifically being dead are: no children at Last Light and the only adult tiefs that are left are the scout that you don't meet until you get to Last Light, Mol, Lakarissa (Alfira died do to complications of this being a durge run), and Danis (no clue where his partner went, but she's not wandering behind the stables like normal). Ostensibly Zevlor is still somewhere.
Anyway, I hope you continue to have fun with this. Dark Urge definitely opened up the game even more once I braved it and is the intended protagonist, Larian just worried it might be too dark for many players to handle (if I can handle Dame Aylin maniacally stomping Ketheric's corpse or Astarion's repeated stabbing of Cazador, I can handle the even darker themes of Durge).

One thing that really upset me when I played as a gith Tav was how, if Lae’zel is in your party, she always steals the spotlight, without fail. Like, when I met the gith by the bridge the dialogue is near the exact same.. with them assuming my Tav is her slave? Which makes no sense at all? And the entire interaction with Vlakith as well. I just didn’t feel like my character was actually respected as their own person at all. It honestly felt like they were the side kick whereas Lae’zel was the main character. It could have been done better I think. A way to give Lae’zel her spotlight and fleshed our story without taking away from the gith Tav.

    @bulletsandbracelets4140 Před 3 dny +1

I'm playing as laezel right now and can confirm it is a LOT of fun! I completely missed half the companions, did next to nothing in act 1, and (after a brief detour in the underdark since we fell down a spider hole) immediately went to the creche. I love that you can find out about the creche and just go there - no need to bother with the things laezel definitely wouldn't want to sidetrack with. The only problem is level scaling if you don't get enough xp beforehand.
Luckily the underdark got me closer XD but it's been a lot of fun, going at things in a straight line vs exploring. I hit act 3 after less than 30 hours played, and see no real reason to slow down now!
Edit: Also - you DEF don't need to fight Nir. I didn't even go into the underdark on my first playthrough! Act 1 doesn't really have a "boss", and there's a few ways to get through the shadows in one piece. But I won't spoil for you or those who haven't explored!

I've played many different characters, beat the game with my Drow/Cleric (which is a lot of fun) and then to get rid of some mods i had to delete all my saves. So i started over and just beat the game with my human wizard romancing Shadowheart. I have a Tiefling fighter romancing Karlach, restarted a Drow cleric romancing Minthara, and i about about halfway through act 2 with my Githyanki monk romancing Laezel. I really didn't want to but people keep talking about how awesome her romance is, and I'll be honest, so far it really is. She is a very deep character. I have a Durge in Act 1 but i can't decide if i want to embrace the murder or if i want to resist it.

Dark Urge as main character makes sense, but not as a gith, probably not as a drow either but especially not the gith. Canonically the Dark Urge had a childhood as an adopted child of a couple. He killed his foster parents when the Urge started to show and eventually went to the Temple of Bhaal. It would be really weird and out of place for a normal couple to take in a goth or drow child. The way you played gith Dark Urge also didn’t make sense. He should have no memories whatsoever, therefore shouldn’t really hate mindflayers and the like as a regular gith.

I think the reason why BG3 is undoubtedly one of the best games that has been created in the last 10 years is because of the story's versatility. You can play a dark urge gnome barbarian wild mage and it would make sense. A pack of Gith makes sense too. My first Dark Urge playthrough was a female drow assassin shadow monk. It made sense to me considering the lore with Bhaal, and the other characters. I thought it made sense that Shadowheart trusted a drow over a gith - Mother Superior's a drow. Astarion values ambition over kindness and makes it abundantly clear that he has prejudices, of course he would want to be on a drows good side. Baldurs Gate is known to have Seldarin Drow, so Wyll definitely ran into some - probably at the brothel! Minthara...enough said.
What is also wonderful about the game is that all the races and classes, depending on how you combine them - you'll experience different options in dialogue. Overall, it's a great game with what seems to be an infinite amount of layers.

Literally could not agree more. There are definitely aspects that I would change, but I’ll be able to come back to this game in another ten years and experience again while being able to learn new things about the game and world.
I compared it to Mass Effect in my review and while it is definitely more timeless than that series, it has some much character that if you invest the time, you will no doubt feel rewarded for your efforts!!!!

I haven't actually got far into this game as a Githyanki yet but I'll play one soon i think as the dialogue options you get are definitely interesting and if you're playing good alignment you can get Lae'zel and Shadowheart on side. I try my best to use other characters but i just default to those 2 plus one more. Maybe its because of all companions they're personal stories fit in the main story the best. Not saying other characters stroies don't fit or aren't important or fun its just those 2 feel so key to the story telling around the main plotline

Yes, the Dark Urge is the central focus of the story (as so much of the dialogue and the books you can find will reveal), but no, the Githyanki are not the assumed focus, but are instead a built in antagonist for the early story. While the Gith get some great extra dialogue options in Act 1, so do the Drow, but neither are written in any way to be central to the story.

The Dark Urge will prove to be the main character, however, as the story progresses... and I would definitely suggest avoiding any speed play options if you want the whole story though, as so many conversations and random books/notes you can read will fill in much of the story that is left blank in a normal play through.

The best I'd seen morality work is a Neverwinter Nights persistent world Dor Meglin had a server alignment always shifting as characters leveled or made sacrificial offering towards their alignment and when the server was in alignment with your alignment you received bonuses like a couple points of divine damage and whatnot. NWN also had a faction system groups would turn on you if you were violent towards a member. But stories and choices isn't something I care for otherwise. The only choices for a second run would be playing evil and having different NPCs with me tell me their stories and make me feel like the game doesn't have any story for another one of my characters. Well I could choose for the NPCs if they do what is right or wrong. That's I guess the problem with playing whatever and having a story but then why all the NPCs have stories put them in a game where you just play the one build the game is designed for.

      @hellsente7826 Před 5 dny +1

The unusual nature of the Durge breaks the entire paradigm and allows other possibilities.
      ... possible spoilers...
      Known facts:
-Durgeyani is a child of Bhaal,
      -Normal Githyanki reproduce asexually,
-All of the Bhaalspawn, other than the main character, were slain in BG 2 (or in less accepted canon novels),
-Other Bhaalspawn were brought back by Bhaal from his own essence after Lord AO reformed him,
-Durgeyanki barely knows how to Githyanki and needs the Toad Princess to guide,
-Durgeyanki claims that he had a Sa'varsh but Durgeyanki doesn't know what ascension or the protocols are or how to read Tir'Su,
-Durgeyanki doesn't really know how to Bhaalspawn either,
-Durgeyanki was referred to those in Moonrise as a "thing", but Orin as a person,
-Durgeyanki apparently had some history in Baldur's Gate and played a role in forming the original schemes for the Elder Brain and the Crown of Karsus,
-Durgeyanki would have needed to earn being Chosen by Bhaal before all the other options,
      -Also... ?
      My conclusions...
The extraordinary situation of a Githyanki surviving outside of a creche in the Prime Material is something which basically doesn't fit anyway.
Seems either Bhaal laid an egg, or he altered an egg... either way it wouldn't have been a normal hatchery process. Somehow Durgeyanki operated in BG while having the body of a Gith (and some of a Githyanki's skills and characteristics). So, magic to obscure appearances? Or really really backroom puppeteering a la Phantom of the Opera or Keyser Söze.
Durgeyanki wouldn't have only the point of view of a Githyanki, and if they knew of Durgeyanki, they'd be Hshar'lak or an abomination and pursued. That could possibly have happened and led to an opportunity to steal the astral prism.
After the creche though, Durgeyanki would also have insights into their own Bhaalspawn nature and have a much more individual perspective. After living and operating in Baldur's Gate, Durgeyanki would have as much basis for identity and perspective from Faerun/The Sword Coast and their actual Gith-ness not such a exclusive factor. This also explains how Durgeyanki almost always only talks in an English accent and in Common. Otherwise even with brain damage some memory of Vlaakith's will as a central motivating factor would have been present to Durgeyanki's gradual understanding of self.
As a renegade Githyanki, and a creature of inherent violence, I wish I had seen if there were plotlines or conversations at the Society of Brilliance in BG... but she offended my princess, so the lady had to die and they should as well.
