A great Indian Mahasiddha, Jetsunma Niguma lived in the 10th century in Kashmir. As Buddhism became more institutionalized, men made up the hierarchy. In many early writings she was thought to be Naropa’s sister, which could also mean wife or mistress, but usually she is thought of as Naropa’s consort.
