    The issue with this show is that it doesn't know what it wants to be.
    It doesn't know if it wants to be Saved by the Bell or Different World.
    One minute the show is trying hard to be super black and the next it's super vanilla.
    The show is littered with black slang and culture, but lots of these characteristics and traits are being performed through the eyes and lens of whiteness.
    No one on the show is really likeable. Everyone is very juvenile and childish.
    The drama is stale, the plots are stale and the characters are stale. There's no real interest or motivation to go back and check out the upcoming episode besides the need or want to see black people on screen, but the show is pure crap.

    I thought I was the only one who felt like this about Grownish! Zoey is unlikable and her antics are a little childish tbh. She needs more dimensions for to be believable. The acting is bleh.... the writing definitely needs work and they should ditch the voice overs, it makes the show kind of PBS-ish. And yes they try to hard with the slang in the dialogue as if old people are writing what they think young black people sound like smh!

    • @mommynab
      @mommynab Před 4 lety +45

      They "stunt cast" vs hiring real actors which keeps happening. Hollywood seems to believe you can take a singer who has a following, send them to a 3 week master class, and suddenly they are "actors." There are 1000s of unemployed actors from top schools NYU, DePaul, USC, etc they could hire and make the acting more of a requirement to make the cast.

      Her character is the same way she was on Black-ish so being unlikable was realistic at first. She was selfish and took shortcuts on there. So for the 1st season it was expected, but you would've thought by mid 2nd and definitely in the 3rd season that she'd mature a little. Seems like the writers think fucking, drinking, taking drugs is the only way kids mature. It's like they forgot their late teenage/early 20s.

    I disagree on the fashion tip. Zoey is very fashionable but I think it’s just not realistic for a college student to be decked out in designer clothes and be that “polished” everyday. Most of us went to class in sweats. So it does make her character unrelatable. As for the comparison between her and Moesha I thought that was interesting considering Yara and Brandy have the same birthday I believe lol. The Aquarius curse.

    I'm mad how little screen time Ryan Destiny gets! Like I like Jillian and she barely even gets a proper character arc! Tbh it feels like she's literally here to make the show appear more "diverse", be kind of a catalyst to Zoey and Luca's drama and be yet another medium to give advice to Zoey smh. At this point the show just got really boring and stale and wouldn't be watchable without the Forrester sisters' clapbacks and their raw and down to earth p.o.v on Zoey's bullshit, Vivek and his weird self entertaining me, and Luca's sarcastic alternative vibe. Aaron doesn't really have a need on the show anymore other than be caught up in Zoey's love triangle foolishness in my opinion and it's weird how we don't hear about his woke activism anymore but I still like him though. Ana at this point is just here to give advice and drive Zoey to her senses. I like Nomi too but I feel like she's just here to be the bisexual, alternative white girl but i like her character. I think the problem with the show is the network they are on. Because the network's demographic is preteen to teenage they aren't going to to totally "go in" on certain topics. The result is sometimes the scenes and scenarios are somewhat generic.

    • @DiscoBewts
      @DiscoBewts Před 4 lety +13

      I definitely agree that networks can hinder a show's progress, but Freeform seems to be a good platform to discuss certain topics; their shows The Fosters, Good Trouble, the Party of Five reboot, even when it was ABC Family, Lincoln Heights, etc. There are so many examples of Freeform pushing boundaries, Kenya Barris just seems to not have the range to really go in on certain topics.

    For me, blackish is suitable bc it describes their experiences as black people vs solely focusing on the percentage of blackness in their DNA. Beau & Dre had extremely different upbringings & approaches to blackness. Kenya Barris isn't a colorist. The characters on blackish are based on his real family . His wife's real nickname is Bow. If my story Is based on my life, the cast will reflect it

    • @mommynab
      @mommynab Před 4 lety +17

      Yeah, I didn't see a problem with the name, it's called Black ish. The "ish" signaled it was close but not fully "black" and the kids match exactly to what one might expect of having a 100% white grandparent. With 4 kids, at least one may be hella light, one dark, and someone in between. Happens all the time in mixed race families - the white gene might carry, or the black or a mix in terms of facial features and color.

They barely talk about serious topic. Oh and the fact that Zoey dropped out of school last episode. I get it, college is not for everybody and her parents are paying for it. But did the writers, show creator ever thought that in California the black population on campus is between 3%-7%. On top of that the retention rate is so bad. Even my friends who got master's degrees question out current president where are our black students. Graduation for black students went from 15 rows deep to 4 rows. They don't got the right people in those rooms. And you are right. They just want to show underage drinking, knowing damn well no university campus that sells alcohol will service underage people and get shut down (I know it's a show but still). The show really missed out on alot of stuff that can and should be talked about besides relationships.

    Now let's move on and talk about the serious topics that gets discussed on the show. Imma give grown-ish some props for touching on cultural appropriation, Rodney's racial ambiguity, and some other topics. Those episodes were enjoyable and were really insightful. But the other episode that discuss serious topics are another situation. The episode i'm referring to is the colorism episode!! The episode started off decent enough (Sky and Jazz were having trouble finding men that share their race who would want to date them and they started a debate on whether or not black girls are still found desirable) but it got bogged down by the fact that there wasn't any dark skin FEMALE characters at the time. Now, Sky and Jazz can be classified as brown skin but to me they are a bit on the light skin complexion side. That doesn't exactly mean they can't really experience colorism it's just that their experience isn't that deep as what dark skin women have to face on the daily (but I applaud them and Vivek (who is not black and understands their struggle) for laying down the facts! anyways back to the episode, I'm really disgusted how Aaron used a dark skin girl as a prop! He literally used her to prove to Luca that he liked nubian queens and not just egyptian queens! Whew chile Kenya Barris isn't as slick as he thinks! Anyways, thanks for letting me rant! (2/2)

Thus every time i watch I feel things are always unresolved. And by stereotypical I don't mean ghetto just that all of them would get their black card revoked if we quizzed them.

    I agree with the comments, yara isn’t the best actress.. I feel like in order for this show to work each episode needs to be on a specific topic.. like if this is suppose to be about college and each character finding themselves why not show that.. they literally breeze through everything. It’s a 30min episode but majority of the episode is just banter. Like how are they on their junior year and we didn’t see any of the struggles of going through college? And I think they need to get rid of the comedic factor bc none of them are really funny besides the Bailey sisters.. Make it into a drama and let jazz & sky be ur comedic relief

Too long of breaks between seasons? Acting? But something. Like you I couldn't get into this season once I found out it wasn't Zoe that was pregnant I lost interest. I think networks are losing great writers to Netflix, Hulu, Apple Tx and etc. Seems that's where the better storylines are going.

    I feel like the reason that a lot of the cast is biracial is because light skin is better “white is right” and all that. I’M BLACK btw. I haven’t watched more than 2 episodes of grownish because I found that Zoey was dumb. Her decisions were, as a lot of others said, immature. And I’m not gone sit here and act like I didn’t do stupid stuff in college but come on sis.
    If a biracial person doesn’t identify as biracial because maybe they hate that one side of their family which I’ve encountered before then I go with how they identify. Otherwise they’re biracial.
    And Ryan Destiney isn’t even that dark! I would’ve loved someone a little darker but either way, it’s an improvement.

      Monica Logan I totally get that and I can say that one of the reasons why the black community identify biracial people as biracial and not black is because when we accept them as black then they push black people who have two black parents(and who look stereotypical black with darker skin and fuller features and kinkier hair)out of spaces because of colorism and because when the media and companies are told they need diversity those companies/ect. then go and find biracial people to fill their quotas because lighter is better and because they are “black”. So we want to create clear lines as to what is black and what’s not not to push biracial people out but to create the much needed space for black people who aren’t ambiguous to have our own opportunities. Ps I said “companies” but that goes for Hollywood, fashion industry, ect.

    I honestly watched this show while in high school when it first premiered...and I felt that they really weren't giving me any real experience of how they try to navigate college- it was practically relationship based. So it just felt like drama at this point and it wasn't really made to highlight Zoey's college experience but to immerse her into drama but in a college setting(at least that's what it feels like for me). Watching this, I got happy when they mentioned the...[SEASON FOUR SPOILER]
    ...pandemic because I am the cursed class that started off their college year during a pandemic...and I got so mad that they glossed that shit over because that would not involve them being in college causing drama and I am so over it. I know a lot of people want to forget about the fact that it happened but it did and I want to see(or if not see then I'll write it myself) a show that talked about what it was like to live through that- and especially trying to succeed as if nothing happened. Exactly like LaVida said Doug and Jazlyn relationship wasn't a struggle toxic love story like a lot of relationships are played out in movies and tv shows. It was actually kool seeing a black love relationship cause they both loved each other and ofc they had their relationship issues like any other relationship but the writere in Season 3 made things so complicated for no reason in my opinion for them. To an extent I can understand Jazlyn taking a step back from Doug cause she lost her focus on her passion which was track but at the same time couples learn how to balance and set boundaries over time in the relationship. Idk I felt like Doug and Jazlyn could of overcame that part in their relationship and grow together but their break was so complicated and Doug was mad over Jazlyn one night stand the writers could of done better of them.

    To be completely honest I think a lot of these tv networks and castings just have an issue with having a dark skin couple at the forefront, it’s always the lighter skinned woman and dark skin man and that can be seen in other shows like Martin even , but yess the colorism issue when it comes to tv shows is too evident. Edit: I definitely think if their going to introduce certain controversial social issues there needs to be better research done into the significance of the topics bc there’s a lot of ppl watching these shows that it’s probably their first time hearing these topics and there’s a lot of misinformation and it just seems watered down and made to be “palatable” for a certain audience. BUT like you said, Zoey is not like able and although they tried to make the themes relatable to students (and students of color) there wasn’t enough substance for each plot. Most of the drama was surrounding zoey and they normally resolved within 48 hours... Given the show is 30 minutes but it’s just not doing it for me. Gemini Stone yeah, the problem with Kenya Burrus is redundancy based on identity. Blackish and Mixish are the same show in different stages of Bow’s life. Grownish is appropriately titled as Zoe’s current stage in life. If the dispute is that Zoe’s life isn’t “black enough” well sure, Zoe didn’t go to college to only acquaint herself in her own identity but to be exactly what she doing. Exploring everything. Let’s not forget most black kids in the US do not go to black colleges or have Hillman type college experience.

Yes Bow is mixed but all of the kids would also be 1/4 white. We act like Dre had these kids with someone else and then married Bow. So what’s wrong with having half the cast mixed in real life? Also, Black-ish May have focused on Dre and Bow’s family but it also goes into their work experience, friends, family members... so we do get a peek into the minds and lives of other black characters. And DRE is the main character and the narrator, so really the show is focused on his experience. Matter-of-fact, Black-ish seems to mirror the creator’s personal life so that could also be why he choose who he chose

    I'm sure that I'm in the minority here, but I think Grownish is the best & most well written show on TV today! However, I think it will be more appropriated when it's syndication, like Everybody Hates Chris or What's Happening was! Also, eventhough it's supposed to be a comedy, it's built in a storytelling form, sorta like Insecure, that like any comedy, has jokes or silly situations but imo, smoothly transitions into the next episode & it's not really a studio audience /laugh track sitcom a la A Different World or Saved By The Bell that just goes from episode to episode with no attachments or connection to each other!
    I think ppl expected for Grownish to be "The 2nd Coming" of A Different World, but I didn't, I guess that's why I appreciate it more! Also, if we're being honest, the 1st & 2nd season of Grownish was better than the Denise Huxtable seasons of A Different World, simply because Kenya Barris came out the gate swinging! Every episode was touching on topics that goes on in college life:
    -Partying/drinking & drug addiction & dealing(Zoey/Ana/Viveck)
    -The ups & downs of student athletes(Cash Mooney/The Twins)
    -Experimenting/discovering ones sexuality(Nomi)
    -Dating/Balancing school & social life(Zoey/The Twins/Doug, hell everyone in general)
    -The role of social media
    -Mental health(Aaron)
    -Student Loans/Employment during & after college(Aaron, Doug & Zoey)
    -Now pregnancy(Nomi)

    For grownish, the better the character the less screen time they get. Chloe x Halle, Jillian, etc...

    Whoever the hair stylists for Zoe & the twins DEF needs a raise she be giving me hair style inspo tbh! But I honestly want them to fully remove Zoe lol. & possibly create a new main character or just keep the rest of the cast. The twins are the best actors on the show tbh to me bc they truly don’t act that way in real life if you ever watch their lives so they definitely embody the characters they are to portray. I simply don’t see how they’re friends with Ana bc she is such a raging Republican BUT she’s gotten a bit better through the seasons. Nomi is chill to me but she doesn’t fit in to me. I like the Luca and her friend type bc that actually meshes but the rest of the group? No. I wish they did better with Doug he should have more storylines. THEY DEF need to let Ryan have more storylines. I don’t see how they made the woke black revolutionary date the raging Republican... speaking of... he really don’t be on that revolutionary tip. He never speaks about any real revolutionaries like Fred Hampton or Khalid Muhammad. He’s doesn’t give off that vibe bc he be too nice to these white people to say he’s a “pro black revolutionary” PLUS he don’t even be that down with the sistas. I personally liked Cash’s character and wish they would’ve kept him not even with Zoe but just kept him. I do like the whole dating the athlete trope and honestly she should’ve stuck with that instead of the Luca, aaron thing. The whole pregnancy trope for nomi was sooooo unnecessary & stupid. But yeah I wish they would take the full on college experience route better in the show and it would be better

    I know this video is about Grown.ish but I wanted to respond to the comment about Black.ish having a biracial cast. The reason for this is in the last part of show's name ish. Andre as a black man is trying to stay true to his blackness despite the fact he's raising his family in the burbs and works in a field where it's dominated by white men. The fact that Bow is mixed, wouldn't it make sense to cast children that are biracial too? Also in a biracial family there is always one child that comes out a dark complexion, it's called genetics. Which is the reason for Diane on the show.

      If a black person and a biracial person have children, they will come out predominantly black. I.e. Barrack and Michelle Obama's daughters

      It does. To me it represented Hoteps and how they date white women, and how they contradict themselves.
