No choice really, hes not the MC. Realistically if the fights were done 1v1 no tricks then Yamamoto beats anyone but its a war not a tournament, anything goes here, both Aizen and Ywatch only launched their attacks when they had a means of countering Zanka no Tachi.

Strenritter Y got the power from majesty himself and jugram because when jugram nearby they got stronger because jugram can give his power to his friend, thats why strenritter Y can match up with Yamamoto and Zaraki. That's why when you look in the fight scene, three of the sternritter tried to help fake yhawch, but Jugram not, although he worried about his majesty was being attacked by Yamamoto, because in that time he knew that he was not the real Yhawch, and just stood still watched his friend fought and booster his power
Zaraki was also restraining his power when fake yhawch folded him and the strenritter Y's task was to tire Yamamoto thats my theory,
afterall Yamamoto also made some mistakes like he didn't want to involve human in his soul society matters, like he didn't want orihime heal his left arm, he think he could protect whole soul society himself and made soul society off guard while in other side, enemies make their preparation completely.

IE, he didn't know about the Wandenreich, its location, the number of powerful quincies it managed to gather or the incredibly in-depth knowledge of the Soul Society they amassed in preparation of the assault. Really, it's Yamamoto's primary character flaw at fault, pride. He underestimated Yhwach's potential and overestimated the Soul Society's ability to see him coming.

was it not obvious? Th 8th division captain was in battle. There was mass slaughter of shinigami. And Aizen was located at first division. Liutenant dead and Captain in battle.The other shinigami are fodder for the king of quincies.
