  • Our first bikepacking trip in the UK was a success! We cycled 70 kilometres between Okehampton and Plymouth in Devon, following the National Cycle Network 27. Despite three flat tyres, we still had a great time and learnt a lot!

Great video. More on the bikes, what to pack, how you navigate, and plan your ride etc.👍

Lovely video. I did Devon c2c last year at 2nd attempt, 1st attempt rear wheel packed in. It’s really a nice route. We did those rides from Exeter to Dawlish / Exmouth last year and my wife found it ok as it’s not too hilly.

I've just happened across your channel. I'm entranced! I have family living in Plymouth, and family living to the east of Okehampton. Both brothers of mine and their families. I grew up in Toronto (and area) after emigrating in the late fifties from London, and the rest of the family returned to the UK some twenty years later, but being the brash North American, I stayed here, but often visited and did work sojourns in the UK (mostly London). When I was in the UK last, I cycled most of the route you've taken in this vid, up from Plymouth and back down again. It was only in the last two years or so that a younger brother had moved to east of Okehampton, and I've been tempted by the thought of doing the trail from near Meldon down to Plymouth, and more. Even in my Seventies, I'm an incurable distance cyclist, and my choice of trails, when offered, are like yours. There's some great ones in North Am, but nothing like what the UK offers.
Thank you so much for this, and your Exmouth to Budleigh one, which I always relished doing. In my past trips to that part of the country, I'd done many from the Taunton area where yet another brother was living up in the Blackdown Hills, my father was in Wellington, and aunt and uncle in North Somerset.
It's gorgeous cycling country, and you're doing it so well.

Aw thank you so much for your kind comment! It really is lovely cycling here (when the weather isn’t too miserable!)

I have to correct "to the east of Okehampton"...it's to the west.

A+. Looks a good ride. You need Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres. The Gold Standard in puncture resistance. Never had a puncture using these tyres on any of my bikes in 20+ years of cycling many many thousands of miles.

Thanks for the recommendation! We did end up buying new back tyres for both bikes and haven't had an issue since!

I must admit that I'm a great fan of, and owner of, Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres, but if they aren't available in the local bike shop I would be very happy with the Continental Contact Plus. Plus I'm a road tourer type and would avoid gravel if I have panniers - if I really want/need to tour using gravel tracks I definitely would go for the Contact Pluses (Plus's?)

@@Neilhuny These are the tyres I had before SMP and got too many punctures.

Buy Schwalb German/Deutschland tyres! I have had my tourer for nearly fifteen years and no punctures!😊 The odd valve has failed, but had no punctures!
