Painting Miniatures - Getting Started with the Absolute Basics

  • Since it's come up a few times with friends wanting to know how to paint their Imperial Assault or Arkham Horror board game contents, as well as a few looking at getting into painting wargame miniatures, I figured that rather than repeat myself a few hundred times it'd be worth putting together a quick introduction discussing the absolute basics of what you need and where to get it!
    I'll cover basic techniques in another video, stuff like drybrushing and shading, but for now this is really about where to begin, what I like to use and where you can find it. This'll probably not be massively useful to anybody already involved with the hobby, but perhaps you just enjoy drifting off to the dulcet tones of my voice!

    Working through my burnout, and I too have been painting for quite some time. (I started at 12 and am now an ancient 41!)
    Citadel paints are lovely. So easy to use and the colors are great and vibrant. Thanks for posting. Love your posts and enthusiasm for the hobby.

    Good hobby introduction video.
    I watched a couple more of your videos about painting black armour (my Sororitas are grateful), and I must say I like your style and how you not just do thing but also explain them. Very enjoyable and I think beginner friendly (though I am not a beginner myself there are still things to learn everyday).
    Thank you for the useful videos and consider me a subscriber good sir !

      Thanks a lot! I think there's a lot to be said for explaining why we do certain things; it's easy enough to simply say what needs to be done, but I think that we learn a lot better when experimenting for ourselves when there's a grounding in why something works in a certain way.

    Totally agree that you should buy the best brushes you can afford. I have (Windsor Newton) brushes in my collection that I have had (and still use) since the 1980s! That said, beginners should also think in terms of ruining some brushes as they learn to paint (it's inevitable) and that it's always less painful when you ruin a cheap brush,

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 6 lety

      I tend to hold that if you're buying the cheapest you can find, you might think you're saving money when you're actually just spending less more often! My oldest brush is only a little over ten years old - I've got some numbers to do yet! ;D

    I have placed paint pots when my sons are painting in the upturned lid of a rattle can. The wider base makes it harder to tip over.

      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 6 lety +1

      Now that's a spot of cunning! Do you dab them down with anything or just sit them in the lid? That's definitely one to circulate around the parents of wargaming households. :D

    Not sure about prices in the UK but Army Painter and Vallejo are both cheaper and you get more paint than Citadel. Plus the Citadel pots will dry out quickly if you dont close the top properly. If not for those two points I would buy more Citadel paints. Like the range, especially the texture paints.

    • @vallytine
      @vallytine Před 5 lety

      Citadel paints are dirt cheap in the UK. Vallejo, AP and Reaper here are all as much as you'd pay for Citadel in the US. A Citadel Base Paint's about £2.75.

    Before spraying some base color from the can (for example Zandri dust for my guards) do you put primer first?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 6 lety +3

      Nope! Luckily, the base colour sprays serve as an undercoat as well, so you don't need to put down a black or white primer first. You can get some interesting effects if you're looking for a more shadowy appearance, but for the basics you can start right from your Zandri Dust.

    My local store has Valejo paints....... But only Air paint, Varnishes, and Primers.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 6 lety +1

      How odd! I've not come across anybody not stocking the basic stuff. The Air paints are perfectly good to use with a brush, but their coverage is slightly different. Maybe try asking whether or not they get in ordinary paints some time?

      I will. Here's hoping they get black and white primers again someday, they're bad at restocking. they've been out of Drad Bark for months, same as that empty slot where dreadnaughts should be on the shelf...

    • @cmm30
      @cmm30 Před 5 lety

      You can brush those but the effect will be quite different. I would go with the normal Valejo paints (which I love for their more muted color pallet) especially as a beginner. Brushing the air brush is a nice thing to try for experimental purposes but much more difficult to control.

    Dumb basic question!!! I decided to have a go with painting proper flesh for the first time ever and tried out undercoating a Blood Reaver with "The Fang" spray. There were patches where it seems to have "bubbled" a bit on the model instead of being smooth. Can you tell me what dumb and derpy thing I did wrong that caused that?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 6 lety

      There's a couple of things that it could be. Spray cans are pretty susceptible to humidity, as I've discovered on more than one occasion myself! Otherwise it could simply be that you've given it a little too much spray in one spot, or come back to spritz it again while the layer beneath was still wet. Just give it a quick rub with your thumbnail and see what it does - if it doesn't flake away, you'll usually be quite happy to paint over it, still.

      I've also heard good things consistently about Halford's grey primer in the UK. Not one that I can get my hands on, unfortunately, but a ton of UK-based folks I know swear by it.

    You said you start with a basecoat. Does that mean you don’t have to prime??? Do you prime??? Does anyone reading this comment prime or do you use base paints (black or white) as the first ever paint on the model and then put base paints on from there.
    Ps I’m a beginner

    • @caztra11

      Buy a black or white primer spray paint. Black if there are areas you can’t reach or want darker colours, white if you want lighter colours. Hope I could help

    Hey mate, how do you rate foundry paints in comparison to vallejo? I’ve found very little by way of reviews of foundry stuff. Could you make a more in-depth vid on paints?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 5 lety +1

      I really like the Foundry paints I've got. In truth their lighter colours don't cover quite as well as Vallejo's do, but they're designed to be used according to Foundry's particular method of layered painting. They're good paints to have in the toolbox, and I have a few to fill in some variation on skin tones.

      Sonic Sledgehammer Studio thanks for the reply. One last question. Years ago (in WD 137) Andy chambers painted an awesome skaven army in a really low-fi ratty sort of way. This interpretation seemed to me to really reflect the skaven character. But their are no tutorials on the more low-fi depiction of the ratmen. Could you shed some light on how to paint to create this type of effect in your skaven? Thanks again, and your vids are great. We really appreciate them. 👍

    The varnish is usable with a brush? I noticed some vallejo stuff says with an airbrush specifically. Like the primer.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 5 lety +1

      The primers you'll definitely get a better result using from an airbrush, or simply a spray-on primer from a can, but where it concerns the paints and varnishes you can use them off an ordinary brush no problem. Just a bit of water to thin them out like you would anything else and away you go!

    • @DARTHSTR1FE

      @@SonicSledgehammerStudio awesome. Just bought that ak ultra matte varnish. I was mostly worried about ruining the basing with the spray. Specifically grass that sticks out.

    Hi after 20 years absence I'm going to start painting again. You mentioned in this video the matt varnish near the end but slipped up with a 60 / 30 mix comment. However you obviously meant a 60 / 40 mix but didn't say which was 60% and which was 40% can you drop me a reply please cheers

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 4 lety +1

      It's not really an exact science, more of a personal preference in how you like the final result. I tend to have a little less of the ultra matte in there, so that'd be the 40% in this case.

      I figure I was pretty honest about what I was discussing. I use GW's stuff because of familiarity, reliability and accessibility. Their stuff works, so I keep using it. Vallejo and Army Painter also got mentioned because that's where I go looking for alternatives.

      Sonic Sledgehammer Studio sorry, I was kidding, though I understand you find it stupid and not funny.
      Anyway, I love your videos. But, as a positive critique, I'd say your guide can become daunting for new comers. I don't think you're talking about the basics. On the contrary, I think you talk about too much products, so the new comers will not know what is essential and what is accessory.
      (Now you can make fun of my English =)

      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 6 lety +2

      It's all good! I didn't read it as though you were making fun; I thought it'd be best to be clear in my reply, though, in case others were to read it later. My apologies if I came across overly stern or harsh.
      As someone learning a second language at the moment, myself, I'd never laugh at anybody's English. I understand just how hard it can be to think across two languages at the same time! I still confuse so many things in German, so don't worry about it. :D I'm sure we'll both improve over time!
