Melissa's respect and compassion when discussing FLDS mothers is the epitome of Christian love. Her lack of judgement and earnest attempts to help non FLDS understand the double bind these women are in has helped me to understand this issue so much better and to want to help.
When the boy came out to ask the officer if he knew why Warren was in prison…I got the impression that he was actually trying to dig for some information! I felt like he might only have heard whispers about the crimes that Warren and others have actually committed, and do not actually know what he was charged with. It was a rare opportunity for him to talk to an outsider, who could then give him straight information without the inherent bias and obfuscation that would taint the info he receives from everyone around him. I was genuinely heartbroken when the policeman feigned ignorance of the whole situation, because it felt like he could have a major impact at that time!
I really empathized with the comment about leaving y your kids behind when you were stepping into hell.. or, in my case, the unknown. I also did this. After much heartache, I left my kids with their dad when I left. He wasn't abusive so I didn't worry as much as many would, but it was still terrifying and I came back for them as soon as I could.
This is such an important point. It's so easy with hindsight or while being from the outside of such situations to say you need to bring your children with you. However, even for someone who is finally leaving such a place, it takes time to deprogram everything taught while there.
Sam talks about being recognized and wishes he could go in with a disguise. He can't disguise that voice! My husband has a deep voice like his. He played Santa at a party we were at one year. When it came time for my three year old to sit on Santa's lap, she started to giggle and out loud she informed everyone that Santa was her Daddy! Everyone at the party got such a big laugh out of that. That was the first and last time he played Santa!
I think you both have explained the position of people in the FLDS well. I can understand why they chose to do the things they do.
I would imagine that the prison restricts the amount of incoming mail because they all have to be scanned and read by Corrections Officers so that it doesn't get contraband into the jail or violate facility rules.

It doesn’t matter if the kids were safe with FLDS or not . The mom had legal custody!
It doesn't matter how nice the LDS is to HER CHILDREN. Their dad passed, so she should have been the one with custodial rights. Anyone else who took them, without a court order, would be kidnapping them. How could police be like, "Oh well. They should be okay there"? 🤯
I am shocked when I read the comments during lifetime movies about Religious Groups....I think if people only understood that Movies autually Romantize Religious Groups....

You said the members of the church were working hard to get the kids back. Why do they try so hard? At what point in the departure process would the church finally give up and leave the kids/moms alone?
As far as I know they never really give up
Sam always says he moved out of FLDS and discues his move to LDS church...Melissa says she was raised LDS...they say they are on a spiritual Journey...I am curious what their current status with LDS is....❤
They have left the LDS church.
Months ago they talked about their spiritual journey. Yes, they’ve left the LDS, but did not say where they’ve gone. I got the impression they were looking.
@@knan75 I tend to get the impression that either they're still looking or they've found some place they are spiritually comfortable but feel like talking about that will distract from the work they're trying to do here building understanding and empathy for the ordinary people who are part of these various Mormon-adjacent groups.
