UPDATE: As of May 3rd 2024, the new Fallout 4 Script Extender Version is out. I just reinstalled the game and followed the exact same method, and the game launches just fine. Typing "getf4seversion" shows me the version, all is good.
That said, some mods may need an update of their own, and that's up to each individual modders. But as of now, you can mod Fallout 4 normally again!

I try and help people out in the comments, but lots of you are having issues I simply did not experience myself. The most common seems to be "Couldn't find fallout 4 exe" when trying to launch the script extender. That's because you put the actual loader on the desktop, instead of the shortcut.
For anything else, I suggest you google any kind of error message you might get to find forums where people may experience similar issues. Though generally, if you follow the tutorial to a tee, it should work fine, as other people here can attest.

Playing FO4 after 9 years of its initial release date. I was OBSESSED and played this when I was 13 and now I'm 22. Played it on the Xbox one, but 4 years ago I switched to PC and learned how to mod my games by modding my BG3 playthroughs. This video helped a lot man, thank you so much for making this video not too long ago. Most of the videos I stumbled across are years old, so it's very nice to see a more recent version on it

Thank you man, this worked perfectly and so fast ♥. Gotta add one lil' thing, if you're running the f4se_loader.exe file directly from the desktop be sure to right-click and run it as an administrator or else it wont work.
Might help for sure, but it's not my experience. I actually just did a clean install of windows and reinstalled all my mods and vortex following my own guide. Worked fine without running as admin, but that may just be my experience.

Just a note for anyone else who may not be able to get the command line to show up. I had to use @ not the tilde key. It seems this can vary based on your keyboard.

Everything went exactly as described until the I clicked the f4se loader exe and I get a pop up that says "can't find fallout 4 exe" but I then read that it's cause I didn't put the shortcut on my desktop. Such a smallnth9ng males all the difference. Thanks man

I received several comments of people with this issue: *Couldn't find fallout 4 exe*. When trying to launch F4SE. Look carefully at 4:00, when creating a shortcut for the loader, it's the SHORTCUT you have to put on the desktop, NOT the actual loader. If you move the loader out of the game folder, it won't see fallout 4, hence the message.

Is there by any chance an option that I can simply use the Vortex Mods folder where I download the archives to, to be also used as mods deployment folder?
Because I end up having all my mods downloaded in the Vortex Mods folder AND upon deployment also in FO4 folder.
So I end up using up 2x disk space. Which becomes stupidly too much at some point and restricts my options for certain modlists like Wasteland Reborn.

You're welcome! Unfortunately there's no unique single way of installing manually as each mod installs in different places in the game folder. That said, check the mod description as the modder often says how to install their mod either manually or with vortex. I do recommend vortex though for anything besides F4SE.
I am having trouble after the shortcut was made. It is on my desktop but when attempting to use, it gives me fallout4.exe cannot be found. I believe I followed the steps as shown, it may be messing up because of the folder location but I am not sure where to start to fix it, I am very new to pc and also modding fallout, kind of panicking if I had accidentally messed up the game entirely.
Alright, let's narrow down the issue.
To find out if you messed up the game, try launching the game normally from steam. If it runs, you did not mess up the game. And as I've said, the files don't alter the game, they just provide a new launcher so technically, you can still play the game normally and ignore F4SE completely. So long as you can launch the game from steam without issue, you're good.
If it doesn't work, right click the game on steam, go to properties, and under the Installed Files tab, click "verifiy integrity of game files" Steam will then scan the game files, remove anything corrupt or out of place. Try launching game. If it still doesn't work. uninstall the game, reinstall it, launch normally on steam.
To find out if the issue is with how you installed F4SE or if it's just the shortcut, double-click "F4SE_loader" in the games folder. That's the actual loader, so if the game launches, F4SE works, and the issue is the shortcut you created. Make sure the loader is in the game folder and shortcut on the desktop, and not the other way around. Make sure you made the shortcut of "F4SE_loader" and not some other file. Make sure you dropped everything in the first level of "steamapps/common/Fallout 4", and not some folder inside Fallout 4.
Start with all that, in that order, and get back to me I'll reply when I can.
@@TerryDuke I figured out what I did wrong from the last part you listed, I was putting the wrong shortcut on the desktop, I panicked when it didn't work at first and kind of blanked out for a bit. Just for others who are coming back to Fallout 4 after the update and TV series etc. - save yourself the money and get the Game of the Year (GOTY) edition from the get go! A lot of the most popular mods require all of the DLC content to be installed and I wasted about $7 on buying the base game and then buying the GOTY edition seperately after making this realisation because, stupidly, the GOTY edition is cheaper than buying the DLCs seperately, or the season pass.

Greetings, i have a question here.
Is there a chance that the game will frequently crash due to the number of mods installed? I had my game crash with just downloading mods from FO4 menu and they weren’t 20 mods. If there is a mod in nexus that helps with managing these mods or makes them less heavy?
The more mods you have, the more likely issues will arise. However this can be helped by loading mods in the right order or getting them from somewhere else; the mod menu isnt great. I have over 130 mods and it does crash occasionally, but getting them from nexus along with F4se, it's fairly stable.
One mod i do recommend is the unofficial fallout 4 patch, which does fix several bugs.

So u don’t get mods from the mods menu on title screen? Why not? Just curious, just switch to pc . Can curse forge work or no?
I just feel like the attempt to make mods install automatically takes away the ability to tweak them, like if there's an issue with the load order, or some other features. That's not to say they won't work, there's just little you can do if they don't.
One of my favorite mods, modern firearms, I get from the mod menu as it's not available on nexus. You just have to enable the plugin in vortex, and for me it works out of the box. But because it doesn't come from nexus, it doesn't install the same, and I could never figure out how to get the armors from the mod into the body slider studio, as such none of the apparel fits my character properly and I can't tweak it.

Did everything as you said in the video, the f4se not working (doesn't load up, yes tried 3 times) vortex keep giving me errors for mods. And the mod menu in game, does not let me enable any mods either. What can be wrong?
Steam version or hacked?
I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I've slowed your video down and did everything you said but whenever I try to launch the game using the shortcut I get a black screen then back to desktop. I've even tried launching it regularly by steam and it won't open.
Go into the game properties on steam and click "verify integrity of files", steam will look at the files and sort out any issue, if there's any. If it still doesn't launch normally, uninstall, reinstall.
You can't use the f4se loader without first using the Steam launcher open. Without it open you'll get a window to quickly open and then close, going back to your Windows screen. Once I went through this, it would then allow me launch from the f4se loader without first opening the Steam Fallout 4 launcher.

Nevermind, saw that it had to do with the older versions and stuff. Thats the reason the error pops up?

Not at the moment. I've always had a fairly powerful rig so lag is minimal. I'll look into it, but you can also tweak the graphical settings. I recommend turning off godrays completely as it's pretty taxing

I unfortunately don’t get the screen to download all the required mods. I juts downloads the main mod without giving me the option to download all required. How do I fix it ?
If it doesnt, it's likely because nothing else is needed.
Otherwise you can see the requirements under the description tab and everything will be there, clicking on the mods will open the mod page.
I have followed all steps up to Vortex, running the shortcut opens the game fine and when checking command console it shows i have the correct script extender, but when going into vortex and Fallout 4 it shows i dont have Script Extender installed (gives me a popup to tell me this and when clicking the 3 dots beside it in Vortex it does not give the option to Run as shown in video) I have retraced my steps multiple times to make sure I havent missed anything but I have not, any idea where I am going wrong?
Does vortex see fallout though? So long as you can run f4se you dont need to launch it from vortex necesarily

Should have used Vortex all together, need to get used to it. Fallout 4 on MO2 is tough. Though I guess some mod managers have their pros and cons. :( I'm slow and some people just talk way to fast for me to understand, and this has helped me so thank you. :) Do you have one for Skyrim SE as well? I have seen allot of tutorials for Skyrim SE but they talk really fast and difficult for me to handle. Sorry. lmao. Hope I can find some VR tutorial mods too for these games. :)

Hey Terry, can you make a guide on M&B Between Empires mod? I cannot seem to get into it, but the concepts and mechanics look absolutely amazing.

The F4SE steam launcher has a 7zip icon for me, and it wont work. Its done this with a bunch of my files though I dont know why it wont work. Giving me a huge headache.
winrar should open 7zip as well, maybe right click, open with, winrar?

do mods alter saving files? i want to install some but i've already started a game and i don't want to lose my progress :(
Generally it's safe, i often test out mods on the go. But I recommend making a second save of your main game and go from there. If something goes wrong, disable the mod and you can load your backup back before you had any mods loaded.

Hi everyone! hope you're keen for the new update. Can someone please HELP me. I recently got into modding and using Vortex I found the I'm getting notifications saying that fallout and some of the dlc files "failed to parse plugins". will this affect my game at all or will the game and dlc still be in as normal?? thank you for any help!

It's not necessary. Most mods can be installed on and off mid-game. Just make sure if you're installing outside of Vortex and mod menu, that you follow the instructions carefully since you'll be installing manually.

You can use Vortex, I just prefer manual. If you use Vortex, make sure to run the game from there to get the script extender

You mean face presets? Graphical settings can impact how good they look, it's also possible they rely on other face mods to get their full looks.

To use the script extender, it has to be through the shortcut. If you go from steam, the game may crash from the mods.
Is it still required to tweak ini files like invalidate etc its been a hit minute since i modded F4
I never did. Just launch the game normally at least once before launching with f4se and everything should work
hey im new to mods and pc in general im trying to mod fallout 4 using vortex and f4se but it does not work what so ever it just says that i am using a newer version of fallout 4 than what f4se is using but yet i see so many youtube videos of pc players using mods form vortex and playing no problem can someone please help this is my first time doing all this and non of it works
As I've said in the pinned comment, F4SE is currently getting an update to match the latest version of Fallout 4 that came out on April 25. As it stands it's not compatible, so I suggest waiting for the F4SE update, could be a few more days.
Ugh...I got GOTY edition for like 10 bucks on gamepass....a week later it was the same for steam...I have gamepass therefore it seems i cannot use F4SE which is just sad because all the best mods require it. Thank you for the video either way.

After i drag the f4se short cut to the desktop and try to open it. I get an system error saying "the code execution cannot proceed because x3daudio1_7.dill was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix the problem." What did i do wrong

Check your keyboard model online to see which serves as tilde
I launched it with the loader shortcut and it works but not when I use the command and type it out does that mean it worked or I’m just spelling it wrong ?
It's case sensitive so type exactly as seen in the video.

Not sure what you mean. If you mean you don't see them in the mod configuration menu, not all mods use it. So that'd be normal, so long as you see them in the game.

before i download vortex there is requirement .NET 6.0+ what is that mean?, how do i know my pc already install that "thing" or not, and what if my pc dont have ".NET 6.0+" how do i install it?

When I try to download Vortex, it says “This Mod requires one or more additional files in order to work properly. Please ensure you have these files installed properly before attempting to use this file.” Then shows “.NET 6.0+ >” and “Windows 10 or above >” I definitely have Windows 10, but don’t know what .NET 6.0+ is. Should I find, and download it to proceed with the Vortex download?
