Ukraine Azov battalion denies neo-Nazi association

- Ukraine's Azov battalion has been the main force defending the city of Mariupol.
The group has a reputation for fighting fiercely, but it has also said to hold far-right views.
In 2016 the United Nations accused it of violating international humanitarian law.
In 2019, 40 US congress members unsuccessfully tried to designate the Azov as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation.
Russian President Vladimir Putin referenced the presence of such units within the Ukrainian military as one of the reasons for launching his so-called “special military operation - to de-militarise and de-Nazify Ukraine”.
The unit has denied it adheres to Nazi ideology as a whole, but Nazi symbols such as the swastika and SS regalia are rife on the uniforms and bodies of Azov members.
The Azov battalion understands it has a neo-nazi image problem but to change it will require support from the rank and file, many of whom are suspected of having far-right links.
Al Jazeera’s Imran Khan reports from the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.

This is completely absurd. Azov are part of a century-long tradition of Nazism in Ukraine. It's not like they just popped up out of nowhere and are misunderstood. There have been Nazis in Ukraine since the beginning of Nazism.

Whether or not the organization itself classifies themselves as Nazis, it consists of members who are very open and public about their beliefs Nazism, fascism, and white supremacy. This includes the founder Andriy Biletski who was and still is a white supremacist. The Azov Battalion was born out of a larger (and now non-existent) Ukrainian militia during the Mariupol siege in 2014. My guess is that Biletski and his followers split off because they knew that their organization wouldn't tolerate their extremist views.

The Germans invaded Ukraine during ww2. Many Ukrainians hated the Soviets for the millions killed by their policies and murder, many young Ukrainians joined the Nazis to fight the Soviets and overthrow them. They didn't join the Nazis out of ideology, that wouldn't make sense because the Nazis saw Slavs as a lower order of human, the Ukrainians joined them in order to fight the Soviet communists.
The Azov Battalion is a very nationalistic group that might even have some real Neo-Nazi's, but they are not anti-Semitic or anti-Slav, they are Anti-Moscow. They aren't even fascists, they are not externally aggressive, they want to defend Ukraine from Russia. The symbols are a throwback to the Ukrainians who joined the SS against Moscow, as well as a call back to their Norse roots.
Lets not mention what kind of stuff was found in their main Mariupol base. Check some american independent journalist who is in Mariupol right now he was in that base and found dead woman civilian (probably ethnic russian) with drawn swastika on her belly. That swastika was drawn with her blood...
